Tapehead47 07-10-2007, 12:07 AM Bobby Brown, by Zappa.
tentoze 07-10-2007, 12:09 AM Van Morrison- it misses much out of context:
The fields are always wet with rain
After a summer shower
When I saw you standin'
Standin' in the garden
In the garden
Wet with rain
You wiped the teardrops from your eye in sorrow
And we watched the petals fall down to the ground
And as I sat beside you I felt the
Great sadness that day
In the garden
And then one day you came back home
You were a creature all in rapture
You had the key to your soul
And you did open
That day you came back
To the garden
The olden summer breeze was blowin' gainst your face
Alright
The light of God was shinin' on your countenance divine
And you were a violet colour as you
Sat beside your father and your mother
In the garden
The summer breeze was blowin' on your face
Within your violet you treasure your summery words
And as the shiver from my neck down to my spine
Ignited me in daylight and nature in the garden
And you went into a trance
Your childlike vision became so fine
And we heard the bells within the church
We loved so much
And felt the presence of the youth of eternal summers
In the garden
Alright
And as it touched your cheeks so lightly
Born again you were and blushed
And we touched each other lightly
And we felt the presence of the Christ within our hearts
In the garden
And I turned to you and I said
No guru, no method, no teacher
Just you and I and nature
And the Father in the garden
Listen
No guru, no method, no teacher
Just you and I and nature
And the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost
In the garden
Wet with rain
No Guru, no method, no teacher
Just you and I and nature and the father and the holy ghost
In that garden, in the garden, wet with rain
Yeah. Alright.
No Guru, no method, no teacher
Just you and I and nature and the father In the garden
nickrobotron 07-10-2007, 02:09 AM For them that must obey authority
That they do not respect in any degree
Who despite their jobs, their destinies
Speak jealously of them that are free
Cultivate their flowers to be
Nothing more than something
They invest in.
nickrobotron 07-10-2007, 02:17 AM I'm saddled with a job, you know
Of interpreting my Dad to a bunch of frightened people
Frightened or just mad
Most of them think they've got it right
But most of them are just dead wrong about life and death and sin
And I've got my fiance, she's supposed to speak my mind
Sometimes she's just chicken and then she messes it up other times.

Broken Hearts are for assholes....Zappa
:D
"Slow Turning", John Hiatt comes to mind, but then anything by Hiatt usually inspires me in some way, shape or form.

pmsummer 07-10-2007, 09:23 AM Oh friends, not these tones!
Rather let us sing more
cheerful and more joyful ones.
Joy! Joy!
Joy, thou glorious spark of heaven,
Daughter of Elysium,
We approach fire-drunk,
Heavenly One, your shrine.
Your magic reunites
What custom sternly divides;
All people become brothers
Where your gentle wing alights.

ozmoid 07-10-2007, 09:27 AM Light as the Breeze - Leonard Cohen
She stands before you naked
You can see it, you can taste it
But she comes to you
Light as the breeze
You can drink or you can nurse it
It don't matter how you worship
As long as you're
Down on your knees
So I knelt there at the delta
At the alpha and the omega
At the cradle of the river
And the seas
And like a blessing come from heaven,
For something like a second,
I was healed, and my heart
Was at ease
O baby I waited
So long for your kiss
For something to happen
Oh - something like this
And you're weak and you're harmless
And you're sleeping in your harness
And the wind going wild
In the trees
And it's not exactly prison
But you'll never be forgiven
For whatever you've done
With the keys
O baby I waited
So long for your kiss
For something to happen
Oh - something like this
It's dark and it's snowing
Oh my love I must be going
The river is starting to freeze
And I'm sick of pretending
I'm broken from bending
I've lived too long
On my knees
And she dances so graceful
And your heart's hard and hateful
And she's naked
But that's just a tease
And you turn in disgust
From your hatred and from your love
And she comes to you
Light as the breeze
O baby I waited
So long for your kiss
For something to happen
Oh - something like this
There's blood on every bracelet
You can see it, you can taste it
And it's please baby
Please baby please
And she says, drink deeply, pilgrim
But don't forget there's still a woman
Beneath this
Resplendent chemise
So I knelt at the delta
At the alpha and the omega
I knelt there
Like one who believes
And like a blessing come from heaven
For something like a second
I was cured, and my heart
Was at ease
O baby I waited
So long for your kiss
For something to happen
Oh - something like this

mhardy6647 07-10-2007, 10:17 AM There are lots, but my first recollection is the Pink Floyd song "Fearless".
I played this the morning of my doctoral dissertation defense to get myself up for that rite of passage :-)
You say the hill's too steep to climb,
Climb it!
You say you'd like to see me try,
Climb it!
You pick the place and I'll choose the time
And I'll climb
The hill in my own way
just wait a while, for the right day
And as I rise above the treeline and the clouds
I look down hear the sound of the things you said today
Fearlessly the idiot faced the crowd, smiling
Emotionless the magistrate turns 'round, frowning
and who's the fool who wears the crown
Go down in your own way
And everyday is the right day
And as you rise above the fearlines in the frown
You look down
Hear the sound of the faces in the crowd
gearhead 07-10-2007, 10:41 AM This Jethro Tull song reminds me of my Grandpa.
He farmed with horses, and I was able to share this song with him, in written form, before he passed away in 1985.
Heavy Horses
Iron-clad feather-feet pounding the dust
An October's day, towards evening.
Sweat embossed veins standing proud to the plough
Salt on a deep chest seasoning.
Last of the line at an honest day's toil
Turning the deep sod under.
Flint at the fetlock, chasing the bone
Flies at the nostrils plunder.
The Suffolk, the Clydesdale, the Percheron vie
with the Shire on his feathers floating.
Hauling soft timber into the dusk
to bed on a warm straw coating.
Heavy Horses, move the land under me.
Behind the plough gliding-slipping and sliding free.
Now you're down to the few
And there's no work to do
The tractor's on its way.
Let me find you a filly for your proud stallion seed
To keep the old line going.
And we'll stand you abreast at the back of the wood
Behind the young trees growing.
To hide you from eyes that mock at your girth,
and your eighteen hands at the shoulder.
And one day when the oil barons have all dripped dry
and the nights are seen to draw colder
They'll beg for your strength, your gentle power
your noble grace and your bearing.
And you'll strain once again to the sound of the gulls
in the wake of the deep plough, sharing.
Standing like tanks on the brow of the hill
Up into the cold wind facing
In stiff battle harness, chained to the world
Against the low sun racing.
Bring me a wheel of oaken wood
A rein of polished leather
A Heavy Horse and a tumbling sky
Brewing heavy weather.
Bring a song for the evening
Clean brass to flash the dawn
across these acres glistening
like dew on a carpet lawn.
In these dark towns folk lie sleeping
as the Heavy Horses thunder by
to wake the dying city
with the living horseman's cry.
At once the old hands quicken-
bring pick and wisp and curry comb-
thrill to the sound of all
the heavy horses coming home.

Dusty Chalk 07-13-2007, 01:46 AM I'm not usually a prayin' kind of guy, but:
Comsat Angels, "Pray For Rain", from Chasing Shadows
...don't remember the lyrics exactly, and don't have the CD handy, but basically the analogy is drawn between people arguing and fire, and how, when they argue, sometimes neither side will give in, and all one can do is pray for rain. It's actually a very beautiful and well-written song.
CUlater 07-13-2007, 02:21 AM Most everything by Pink Floyd, Rush, and Jethro Tull.
And then there's:
Whoa, Black Betty - bam-ba-lam
Whoa, Black Betty - bam-ba-lam
Black Betty had a child - bam-ba-lam
Damn thing gone wild - bam-ba-lam

Sandy G 07-13-2007, 05:52 AM Well, he took Little Susie to the Junior Prom,
Excitable Boy they all said.
Then he raped her & killed her then he took her home,
Excitable Boy they all said.
After 10 long years they let him out of the Home,
Excitable Boy, they all said.
Then he dug up her grave, & built a cage w/her bones,
Well, he's just an Excitable Boy...
Neil Young
"Loner"
He's a perfect stranger,
Like a cross
of himself and a fox.
He's a feeling arranger
And a changer
of the ways he talks.
He's the unforeseen danger
The keeper of
the key to the locks.
Know when you see him,
Nothing can free him.
Step aside, open wide,
It's the loner.
If you see him in the subway,
He'll be down
at the end of the car.
Watching you move
Until he knows
he knows who you are.
When you get off
at your station alone,
He'll know that you are.
Know when you see him,
Nothing can free him.
Step aside, open wide,
It's the loner.
There was a woman he knew
About a year or so ago.
She had something
that he needed
And he pleaded
with her not to go.
On the day that she left,
He died,
but it did not show.
Know when you see him,
Nothing can free him.
Step aside, open wide,
It's the loner.
theWB 07-13-2007, 06:27 AM Looking out the door
I see the rain fall upon the funeral mourners
Parading in a wake of sad relations
As their shoes fill up with water
And maybe I'm too young
To keep good love from going wrong
But tonight you're on my mind so
(You'll never know)
I'm broken down and hungry for your love
With no way to feed it
Where are you tonight?
Child, you know how much I need it.
Too young to hold on
And too old to just break free and run
Sometimes a man gets carried away,
When he feels like he should be having his fun
And much too blind to see the damage he's done
Sometimes a man must awake to find that, really,
He has no-one...
So I'll wait for you... And I'll burn oh
Will I ever see your sweet return,
Oh, will I ever learn
Lover, you should've come over
'Cause it's not too late.
Lonely is the room the bed is made
The open window lets the rain in
Burning in the corner is the only one
Who dreams he had you with him
My body turns
And yearns for a sleep that will never come
It's never over,
My kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder
It's never over,
All my riches for her smiles when I slept so soft against her...
It's never over,
All my blood for the sweetness of her laughter
It's never over,
She is the tear that hangs inside my soul forever
Maybe I'm just too young
To keep good love from going wrong
Oh... lover you should've come over...
'Cause it's not too late...
I feel too young to hold on
I'm much too old to break free and run
Too deaf, dumb, and blind
To see the damage I've done
Sweet lover, you should've come over
Oh, love I waited for you
Lover, you should've come over
'Cause it's not too late
