I am working on cleaning up an RG-2.

The unit appears to work correctly with the following exception... I can't get the pushbutton switch on the front to stay engaged. This is the switch that enables the range expansion function. The unit also has similar switches for the system power and the tape monitor.

After looking closely, when I push the switch in (turn on), the unit's meter lights go on and the unit functions. When the switch is out, the unit's meters go out and the unit is in 'standby'.

There appears to be something mechanically wrong with the switch in that the pushbutton will not stay in or depressed.

Has anyone ever dealt with this switch before?

I could probably desolder the entire switch if necessary and make a replacement if I were able to find the exact replacement part. The schematic calls this out as part number ASG-216.

I do not see where/how I could actually open the switch to make an actual repair. Maybe someone knows if this is possible.

I would appreciate some ideas.

Thanks!

This is a common problem with these units...

Take a look at this thread... hopefully it will help.

Ah, crap - I have an RG-2 and an SR-202, and just a few days ago passed on a Yamaha R-700 for 12. Wish I'd seen this thread before I did that... :sigh:

I was able to find an exact replacement for both switches on the RG-2 unit on eBay. The switch set that I purchased came as a pair (they are attached with a mounting bar). One switch (the shorter one) that enables the processor and the other switch (the longer one) is for the Tape Monitor circuit. Sorry, I don't have a link to the eBay add. I just did a search on RG-2 and found several replacements.

From what I read, it made sense to replace both switches at the same time. Apparently, the original switch mechanism will eventually fail. It is just a matter of time and the number of switch cycles (on / offs).

I did receive one suggestion from someone to 'just remove the spring that keeps the switch in the outer position'. This would be a cheap and simple 'fix'. I could, at least, leave the switch in the ON position and leave it there.

I decided I'd splurge and order the switch set.

I attached a few photos of the 'operation'. It really wasn't too difficult. I used my solder sucker to get most of the solder out of the way. Final cleaning was with a solder wick. I could then move the switch set down and out of the way. Installation went easy as well. Just go easy with the solder and keep it contained to the little pad around each switch pin.

My RG-2 is now back in working order. Thanks for the suggestions!

Excellent ! :thmbsp: Were the parts original Pioneer or aftermarket ? I have an SG-9800 and I fear this may be something I will have to do someday.:sigh:

The replacement switch was aftermarket.

I wish I had more information other than it was listed as an action item with a BIN price only. The other adds were for the individual switches. With this one, I was able to replace both as a unit.

I could dig up an email address if needed.

He's really easy to find on ebay, I just found it using the search terms pioneer and rg-2.

Apparently he's had a bunch of them made special ( to make the special order minimums ) by another company that rates these at 10,000 actuations, plus the contacts are silver plated brass. Something else he makes and sells uses the same switch (on purpose).

Well, looking at this it seems the problem of those switches is cured, and all that's needed is to keep the information about this parts source fresh.
