John Coltrane entered into eternal rest July 17th 1967 forty years ago. "When John Coltrane passed away in 1967, he left behind a family, an increasing circle of followers, and a golden trove of recordings that still helps pay the bills for the company with the good fortune to own the Impulse catalog. His musical influence is pervasive and easy to mark, inside the jazz circle and beyond.” --Ashley Kahn February 2006

To myself and others John Coltrane is revered as a Saint, so this is a day of religious significance. (Coltrane's) “music provided a form of ecstasy or catharsis transcending the limitations, dreariness, and desperation of ordinary existence. “ (http://www.forministry.com/USNJECUSASBECS/) I hope to commemorate with a marathon listening session.

Among the non- Coltrane records I will listen to is :

Love, Devotion and Surrender John McLaughlin and Carlos Santana | Columbia Records (1973)

Talkin' About! Grant Green

I will simply fill my house with "A Love Supreme" when I get home. Loud (full life volume).

Thanks for the reminder!

I'll put on "Giant Steps" as I drive to Missouri today. It's one of the only decent cassettes I have in my car.

I shall honor this man with the saintly talent by playing, back-to-back:

The Prestige Sides
Blue Train
Giant Steps
A Love Supreme
Ascension

... but only after I'm done listening to Oliver Nelson with Eric Dolphy on Oliver's Screamin' The Blues album.

It's been years since I've heard about the Coltrane Church, read about years ago in Life or Look magazine (who could tell them apart?) I did not know that the "church" was still a going concern.

I've been listening to Trane for the past 35 years....but will listen again to Giant Steps in his honor. Back then my favorite band was the MC5 and all they talked about was Coltrane and SunRa. To JC!!!!!!!!!!
