My newly aquired TU-717 arrived yesterday, and I hooked it up to my AU-7500 and Dynaco A-25's to give it it's initial listening.

While trying to tune in stations, the tuning meter will start to wildly bounce around, instead of swing towards the center like normal. It doesn't do it all the time, and with a little wiggling you can get it to center. I've never seen a center tuning meter behave like this before.

Any thoughts on this from you tuner Guru's out there? The case looks like it has had a semi-rough life, so damage from rough handling may be a possible cause? I'm keeping my fingers crossed that is an easy fix that you guys are familiar with!

Thanks, Guys! :thmbsp:

While I am no tuner guru, maybe the tuning cap is full of dust. It could happen.

Rob could be right -- dust between the blades of the tuning capacitor can make inaccurate and intermittent centering of the frequency happen. But, I don't recomment compressed air to correct this problem because that can often drive dust into other places you don't want it to be. Try a small vaccuum cleaner and a soft 1" paint brush with the tuning capacitor rotated both open and closed. Suck that stuff out!

Thanks for the tips! As I have been using it, it seems to be much better, so it probably was junk in the tuning capacitor. Sounds great, needs a little body work on the cabinet, and the front feet are missing as well. And the rack handles need a repaint, like my AU-719. Thank god for the rack handles, I am guessing that the abuse shown on the handles would have been on the faceplate instead if they were not there...

I typically use compressed air for cleaning, and Paul's caution has merit, I will break loose the crud with a soft bristle paint brush and use an air nozzle I made from 1/8 copper tubing, then go to the rear of the tuner cap and blow the debris out from the back to avoid lodging it in there.
It makes a world of differance in performance, never use chemicals in that area, did that once, years ago, took forever to undo what a second of spray from the deoxit can did...:nono:
