View Full Version : What's a completely restored 2325 worth?

I'm just curious. What's the current, fair market value of a completely and professionally restored 2325 that has been tested, serviced and calibrated, by a Marantz specialist, with everything that needs replacing, replaced? Lamps, capacitors, resisters, re-soldered, etc. One that is both cosmetically and electronically exceptional?

I'm in the process of servicing this one and I'm trying to decide whether or not to keep it or sell it. It's my 2nd 2325 and don't know if I really need two. I'm restoring it to the same standards as if I were keeping it or giving it to my son for a graduation present, which is yet another option.

If I decide to sell, I want whoever buys it to feel that it was worth every single penny. What should I expect to get for it if I decide to let it go? I'm just curious as to whether or not I'll be able to break even with what I'm putting into it.

Here's a sneak peek at the bad boy in question. TIA. :beerchug:

keep your eye on ebay and see what a couple sell for, what someone is willing to pay is a much better barometer than speculation..

I'm doing that, but I don't see many fully serviced ones at least at this level, being sold on eBayt and the prices seem to be all over the place. But okay, I'll keep looking. I guess the short answer is, "it's variable". Thanks.

There is one right now on Audiogon going for $600, but I don't think it's all tuned up like yours will be. There is one on classicaudio that just sold for $999 that was probably tuned up and cleaned well. That one had a wooden case, so that would add about $100 to the mix. That would make yours about $900. When you get to that $900 range you are in competition with the refurbed vintage McIntosh equipment and that stuff is salty. I guess it's what the market will bear.

How extensive was the recapping, etc? That would make a difference.

Thanks for the info. Is it better/wiser to sell on one of these other specialty sites as opposed to just throwing it on eBay?

As for how extensive, the re-capping, etc. will be, I don't have that info yet. Basically, I'm giving my tech carte blanche because I want it to be put absolutely right when he's finished with it. I can tell you this though. Whatever it needs, it'll get. When all is said and done, it will be a very thorough job.

Thanks for the advice. I'll certainly post it on AK if I decide to sell, with a complete and thorough description of the work performed, and of course, lots of pics if I can post them here. I've never posted an ad here, so I'll have to investigate that further if/when the time comes.

Restorations are for personal keepers. In few cases can you recoup the cash invested in a unit for work like this. If it is done well by a good tech, certainly it can increase the value, but rarely to the point that you might get your money back.

Kinda like restoring old cars and reselling. Tough to get your money back, but you do it for the love, and because your initial intention is to keep it.

Be sure to take a photo of the invoice when you get it back and make it clear what you spent getting it up to speed...also, if your tech offers you a warrantee on his repairs, you could extend that to the new owner (if your tech agrees). Make it clear that the warrantee issues need to be addressed directly with the tech (so you are out of the middle once the sale is complete).

Wow, really interesting. Thank you. I guess I should feel sheepish for paying more than the highest amount listed for the first 2325 I purchased and will have to be pried out of my cold, dead hands. It's stunningly beautiful and flawless in every way imaginable. But I don't. I tend to feel very skeptical about a lot of the receivers I see on eBay. Esepcially the ones where the sellers have no idea what they're selling. Like the 2325 on there now with severely melted lamp holders that illuminate half the Tape 1 and Tape 2 indicators simultaneously with the FM indicator and an RCA patch cord "included because the factory preamp in/out jumpers were missing". Sheesh.

I bought my 2330 (not 2325) for $300. Cosmetically it is a 9.9 out of 10 and includes a WC-22 case. I brought it to my tech with the instructions: "Do whatever needs to be done to bring it back to factory spec and have it last another 30 years." The cost of that work: $275. Total investment: $575. Listening to Dark Side of the Moon through it and over a pair of Allison Acoustics CD8s? Priceless. :D I imagine you can expect to pay about the same for work done to a 2325. BTW -- my tech's rate is $66 an hour.

Some of the work done included:
- Cleaned all controls and switches (3 times)
- Replaced intermittent (output?) relay
- Found, replaced bad OP amp in left channel
- Found, replaced three bad capcitors in power supply
- Calibrated amp biases
- Majorrealignment of tuner
- Replaced all display bulbs
- Complete FM alignment
- Stereo MPX calibration
- Complete cleaning of interior of unit (I'd already done it once before I brought it to the shop)

Selling vintage gear is not an exact science and not without fluctuations and tradeoffs. For instance, are you willing to ship it.. If so, the price goes up due to a larger audience, maybe $400 to $800, but there is some loss due to shipping and boxing. If you won't ship it, maybe $200 to $600.

That would be my guess anyway. Personally, I don't think I would even be tempted at higher than $ 300. but that's me..

BossRadio4VR
07-23-2007, 06:22 PM
Of course I'd be willing to ship it, and if I opt to sell it, I'm pretty sure I know who will not be buying it. No offense, but $300 for a totally refurbed 2325 is a ridiculously low price. I'm not saying you cannot find one for that, but I think your chances would be pretty slim. If you know where someone is selling one for that price with verifiable documentation, I will gladly buy it. Immediately. As in, right now, today.

I well done auction with good photos and placed at the right time has potential to go sky high.

Or not. Its very inconsistent.

Don't bet on anything. On some level you just have to close your eyes and hope for the best.

I had a pretty neat modified Pioneer SA-9800 I thought should go higher than $300, but it didn't. That's the way it can be sometimes.

Yeah, put it on AK,and let it rot there for a year.Youll be lucky to get half of market value on AK,and then youll have to wade through 2 pages of instructions on how he wants it shipped.Do yourself a favor. If you plan on selling it,go the ebay route.Less hassle and more reward for your efforts.

All good feedback, thanks. Got some feedback from my tech, also, who received my 2325 today. For starters, he's going to replace most, if not all the electrolytic caps on the thing. Around 30 of them. Like I said, it's going to get a very thorough refurb. Can't wait to hear it when it gets back. :music:

I'm in Southern California. Hesperia? I think I just drove through there on the way to Las Vegas last week, if I'm not mistaken! Stopped at Bob's Big Boy for a burger at 8 in the morning! But no, I'm not real close to there. I can assure you, I know how to ship these things for transit. After all, that's how I got it to my tech. It should be ready completed later this week or early into next. We're really taking our time with it. Waiting on some parts at the moment... :beerchug:

Well, I got my answer.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=320151926284&sspagename=ADME:X:RTQ:US:11

It was worth the "Buy It Now" price I set. It took less than 30 hours for it to sell. I set a high opening bid to weed out the tire kickers, but made it a no reserve auction. I also required immediate payment for the BIN option. I think it was a fair price and I know the buyer is going to be very happy, so it's all good. :music: I'm going to pack it like the treasure that it is after installing LED function lamps in it, to go along with the LED dial and meter lamps I've already installed. That's function LED's were a freebie for someone clever enough to use BIN. Had I received even a single bid ahead of his, that option would have disappeared. A little more $ and work for me now, but I've already swapped these out on my own 2325, so it will be a piece of cake. :thmbsp:

Gotta be candid here, Bolly. I think I probably could have gotten closer to that $1,000 mark based on the tremendous interest this thing generated. The last time I checked, 36 people had bookmarked the listing to keep an eye on it, and it sold quickly. I think that had the buyer not stepped forward and bidding began, it would have definitely gone for more than $900, but like I said in the auction, I'm not in it for the money. I wanted to do it for the fun of it and being able to deliver a totally cherry 2325 to someone who wanted it badly enough and was willing to pay more than most of the stuff you see posted on eBay in consideration of the work that went into it.

I'm really happy with how it turned out. I made enough off of it to recoup my expenses and make a few bucks, but not so much that I feel like a heel or a creep for gouging someone. It makes all the difference when you're selling something you KNOW is really special and don't misrepresent it and someone else out there digs it and takes that leap of faith and trust. I want this guy to be THRILLED with this thing. I think he will be. :thmbsp:

And THANKS Marantzfan! :beerchug:
