Colleague of mine at work has just bought a 6.1 receiver and asked me to recommend a speaker system for $1000 or cheaper. I personally think he should go with vintage, but what the hell do I know? Any one want to comment?
Thanks...

He should really go do some research for himself on the web. Your idea of vintage is a very good one but he will have to scrounge matching speakers so they will voice well together. There is a lot to be said for vintage speakers Vs. nasty brick sized things (or smaller like Blows) sold today in stores. Tell him to scrounge for vintage Polk, JBL and many other speaker brands. It really matters more what brand speakers he likes the sound of more after he hears a pair for himself. John

I haven't heard these myself but I have read good things.

audioholics picked those for the under $1000 HT setup. Here's the 5.1 link http://www.av123.com/products_product.php?section=speakers&product=92.1
I tend to trust their HT reviews as they keep updating as new products hit the market. For example, they were really hot for Optiva LCDs and then later very cold (i.e. withdrew the recommendation) when problems starting showing up with the units as they aged.

Really check out the BIC Accoustech system. Acoustech? Lemme look and link.

I read a few AV sites reviews and they were blown away by the sound and especially the price.
Here is one review I've read http://www.audaud.com/audaud/MAR04/component/comp1.html
