Converting Reel-to-Reel to DVD

Any suggestions on how to do this? Reels are quite a bit before my time so I don't know their ins and outs. We are trying to preserve some video from my dad's childhood and were wondering what was the best way to convert it to DVD. The best way we have come up with was using a digtal vid cam and tape it while the reel was running. Then just burn it on to a dvd. Any other suggestions.

Hmmm ... interesting problem.

Does the projector have any form of analog out (video & audio)? If so it would be a short step to get it onto VHS tape and from there to some sort of digital.

Otherwise your method (low tech as it is :D ) is the only other way I can think of without getting it done professionally and having to part with some $$.
