View Full Version : What power condition do you use?

I'm starting my research into getting a power conditioner for my system below. :scratch2: At this point I'm leaning torward a Powervar 1200-11. I would mod it with PS Audio powerport outlets, an IEC and apply damping material. This looks like the least expensive way to get into this. I have a dedicated 12ga isolated grounded circuit for my system and whole house surge protection at the main panel. I know there are a few Gray setups out there but I'd like to see what everybody else is using or not using and why. If you are in the "other" group please add a post as to what you're using.

Monster HTS 3600, Used an HTS 3500 for 2 years, Then a transformer blew
this year that was suppling juice to my house, The unit shut everything down
as advertised, But went into alarm mode. Found out that "Kills" the unit, And
it is normal. Monster honored the warranty, And sent the newest equal model.
The 3600 is the same with 2 changes, A digital readout, Vice analog, And the
very annoying blue LED has been toned down. A product that actually did
what it said it would, And saved $4000 worth of AV stuff.

Shunyata Hydra 8 here. The Shyunata conditioner and VX power cord did a great job of keeping the RFI and EMI problems from the CD player out of the rest of the system.

I just use a cheap power strip/surge protector but I am in the market and have been checking on prices and models. I really like the Monster HTS 3600 but I understand it is NOT a power conditioner. I am running out of recepticals (again) and I really need the assurance that my gear wont be damaged by spikes, surges, lightning strikes or whatever comes in through the wall. :nono:
I will be watching this thread and am looking forwards to adding another "component" to my system.:thmbsp:

Not on the poll but Equitech balanced power is used by a lot of professionals in the military, music, studio worlds as well as other critical applications such as hospitals.

Equitech is also certified to meet the highest ANSI/UL standard (Std. #1012) for AC power distribution equipment.

Richard Grey gear is not. Some may consider this extremely important. Some obviously do not.

I use a 3Q and 1.5Q in my sytem.

it's very nice, but the 3Q and 1.5Q is not a line conditioner, line filter, or line regulator...right...it's a balanced transformer that move the ground reference and results 120 being turned into 60-0-60. Theory is that the inverted phases will cancel line noise. It seems to work within a narrow ragne very well. exposed shots of these do not show any filtering or RMI type componets. I made a DIY version using a 5000w medical grade transformer. I still connect a regulator and a line conditioner to it.

Sure...

I don't use one because I believe the PS in my gear is good enough - meaning I don't have any power issues I can detect.

My house is heated with dual-fuel arrangement. I leave it run electric almost all of the time. There are two plenum heaters that draw a total of 16kW (67A @ 240V). Even though I get a slight line voltage drop when they kick in, I have yet to hear any sort of click, pop, etc. come from my system.

Two BrickWall units and one ZeroSurge provide my surge protection as well as some very good A/C filtering (-38 dB at 120kHz on a steep slope at that point).

Aris, Elan and Furman in the recording studio. APC battery backup.

Tripp-lite UPS on the music servers and house audio system.

Panamax on the dubbing rack and on the main theater/listening room. Adding a UPS on each soon, might be Tripp-lite again.

For what it's worth, my old company sent back pallets full (no exaggeration) of the consumer-level Monster power conditioners as defective for a while there. Pro-level seemed to work fine. Main issue was the switched outlets switching on & off by themselves, but there were other issues, too. We also used thousands of the Monster power strips and they were excellent.

Adcom ACE-515, I don't have a clue how it stacks up against any of the others. I use it for the overload protection, power up and down delay and the fact that it's a good power strip.

Running Springs in all three systems....

Main system has a Jaco and a Danielle (each on 20A dedicated lines)
System two has a Jaco on a 20A dedicated line
Living room system has a Haley
Plasma, TIVO and DVD player also has a Haley. A little overkill
there, but the picture looks great .

Three of our reviewers have another two Jacos, two Haleys
and a Duke...

Very happy with the performance. Most dealers will give you a
15 day trial, so it's worth giving a listen to see if you like!

Monster HTS3500MKII seams to handle all my needs I got about 17 different things plugged into it. All well within it's rating. It's handled a couple of nasty flashes thru the AC where the power goes out then browns then out then back on full all within a couple seconds. Which can't be good for unprotected vintage gear.

I don't use any and don't intend buy one in the future. In 1977, my house was struck by lightening, and it fried my TV and damaged some vintage Dynaco equipment. My insurance company replaced the TV with a new one and paid to get my PAS3 Dynaco fixed along with many other items like the well pump. Why would I want to pay hundreds of dollars for a device that adds no sonic improvement to my system? I pay hundreds of dollars a year for homeowner's insurance that covers any damage that may occur to items in my house---which has happened ONE TIME in my life.

Just took a look for this one....$4100. About what my daily driver 1988 4runner is worth.

It would be valuable (at least to me) to have feedback on the best units at various price points, so as to avoid comparing apples with oranges. Personally, I'm looking to spend about $300.

The benefit of surge protection is not the main reason for power conditioning equipment. If you can't notice a sonic improvement you don't have the right power condition equipment. The Richard Gray RGPC 1200 made McIntosh equipment sound like a new system with more detail than ever before. There may be others that work well, but there are definitly no regrets here for adding the RGPC 1200. Listening to the system now, can't imagine it sounding better, but some say adding multiples of this unit make it even better.

In my 2-channel system I use a DIY conditioner based on an Equitech 2Q transformer for my analog components and another brand transformer for my digital components. I have experimented with different brands of balanced isolation transformers and the Equi=Tech has been the best all around in terms of sonics, low inrush current, inaudible mechanical noise, and immunity to DC on the power line. The only downside is its massive weight. The bare transformer weighs in at 60 lbs. and complete chassis weighs a hernia-inducing 105 lbs.

In my HT/secondary 2-channel system I use a Belkin PureAV PF-60 conditioner. I like its ability to individually program switching and delay for each outlet bank. This works great for my Phase Linear 400 Series 2 amp with its lack of a power switch.
