I am going to purchase a 1080p LCD sometime in the near future. I haven't decided which tv yet, but I need to purchase a dvd player first. I don't have one right now. I don't own any SACD disks and I already have a pretty good dedicated cd player and turntable in my 2-channel system. I'm not a big gamer either, but I do enjoy occasionally playing the latest Madden football and one or two other games. I have owned game systems in the past, but have sold them all. DVD playback is probably my top priority and whatever I choose will be connected to a Yamaha 5.1 receiver and some jamo speakers and sub. CD playback is not a priority, but would be a nice to have, as well as SACD and DVD-Audio. What's your opinion of the three?

Thanks,

I was actually choosing between the Denon 2910, Arcam DV78, and PS3. My request for opinions was probably pretty screwy with the mixed up/unclear priorities and requirements. Well, I ended up purchasing a PS3 because of the Blu-ray and dvd upscaling to 1080p (included in latest firmware update). It also has SACD, and its price was about the same as the other two, around $500. The Arcam and Denon are older models and have been heavily discounted recently. I think they both retailed for around $1K. If I didn't already have a decent audio cd player I might have purchased the arcam or the denon. The arcam seemed to have great picture quality out of component video (no hdmi). CD audio out of the Arcam is noticeably superior, but no SACD or DVD-A. The 2910, I believe, was the most versatile as a universal player, minus the 1080p upscaling, which was not included in the Arcam either.
