I'm biting the bullet and will end up paying big$$ to have my A7's profesionally veneered by a wood refinishing expert. Now I need some advice. How do I go about mounting the horn inside the cabinet as opposed to leaving it on top where it currently resides. Can I just cut the appropriate size opening in the wood panel on the front and mount it below the woofer? Is there a precise place I need to install it? As you can sense I have no idea WTF I'm supposed to do here.

Thanks Mike

Why spend money on them? You'll just be bored of them soon and trade/sell them for something else :p: ;)

Thor I'm dropping the $1,000 so I have WAY too much tied up in them to dump em.

Will the new veneer match the visible pink insulation and vapor barrier in the picture? :p:

I don't know why you are fussing so much they look damm fine painted gray like they are, they have a cool industrial look to them. They are more handsome than 99% of the VOT's I've seen ;)

Mike,
I don't know much about this stuff, interconnects and music is my forte.
However, could the carpenter(By the way,Richard and Karen were Carpenters) not build an enclosure for the horn?I am sure someone on board could work out the physics of the box.
Please note to everyone,if I am speaking blasphemy,I am sorry in advance

Hey Mike,
My pair in the garage were made horn inside. Basically you use
the same brackets. The hardware for the brackets is countersunk in the wood under the veneer. That's about it.

So I'd just use the mounting hardware from the top of the cabinet and put that in the bottom of the cabinet? Do I need to cut an opening in that cover thats there now and put that cover back on?

I thought it was bad to have a tweeter at foot level?

Dang, I was uploading a pic from my pos camera and my computer
locked up. Love that Microsoft!
Thor, you invert the cabinets.
The plate/cover on mine is incorporated into the 5/8" grillcover frame as in pic. It came with an 811 horn but I did incorperate a
511 horn making a plate to mount the horn.

You use the original mounting board and rear support bracket. This is best done before turning the cabinet upside down. then a small board fills in the gap below the horn.

Wardsweb, is that a 511 horn? Which horn you using Mike? I was
thinking 811 by pic. These OLD cabinets of mine aren't deep enough to put a 511 inside. Just curious.

Doh! flip the cabinet upside down, now why didn't I think of that? :dammit: :withstpd: Now if you can make them look like Wards it might be worth it ;)

The A7 828 cabinet will fit either the 811 or 511 horn. The mouting bracket will have to be place forward for the 511 and back for the 811. This is to accomodate the difference in depth of the two horns. If the cabinet is factory the holes are already pre drilled for the two placements.

BTW: I run the 511B

Mine is also the 511 B horn. Why do I get the feeling I'm in over my head? Rob told me the horn driver should be perfectly in line with the woofer magnet as well.

Oh just sell em for 50 bucks to me. Then you can buy some Blose cubes that your wife will say are cute

Interesting, I would say both you guy's cabinets are a little, not a
lot, bigger than mine. Mine are from the 50's and came with 811
horns. I couldn't use the grill cover with the 511 horn . It misses it by 3".

Just a guess, but you might have A5 cabinets and not A7's. The back of my drivers are about one inch from the back of the cabinet.

Mine too Wardsweb. They don't have any ID plate and I never
sucessfully rearched the exact model. They could well be A5's not A7's.

Pro...are you simply having them reveneered? or a new enclosure made?

If your making new enclosures...you've got several options.

No GF there just going to have veneer applied over the existing enclosure.

Pro...that seems like an awful lot of money for a re-veneer job. But the costs vary from place to place...so it might be a fair price in your area. :dunno:

Since your going to have the horns out...you may want to dampen the 511 horns. You can do so a couple different ways...the easiest would be to spray the outside with undercoating or something like quiet--kote (from parts express) Others have gone further than this on their Altec horns...but one of the sprays would be easy to do...and effective

have fun!
