View Full Version : Akai AT-2600
BroonsBane 07-27-2007, 06:53 PM Wow, what a great little tuner. Picked it up the other day, what a great sounding tuner! I'm completely impressed. It's fantastically sensitive and dare I say sounds a lot better than some very expensive tuners I've owned.
Some of the bulbs are out but she's in near perfect condition. I love this tuner! :music:
totem 07-27-2007, 07:28 PM Is that a brushed gold finish? Looks very classy. Now you will have to look for the matching amp for that series. Maybe its one of those under the radar units, but not for long.
BroonsBane 07-27-2007, 07:37 PM The guy I got it from had the matching AM-2600 amp with a couple of great big gouges in the face so I passed. I'll find one somewhere.
The face is actually brushed silver, I guess the light coming through the blinds gave it that affect. It just sounds so good and I can't stop being impressed with it :)
zenith2134 07-27-2007, 08:42 PM Definitely a great piece. Mine often looks gold too since it is near a window. I actually think it is among my all-time favorite units, not just tuners. And I have owned quite a number of units! Seriously nice sensitivity though. I think it is 1.5 uV or better - I can never find info on Akai, as many AKers have said before....
ARRAY 07-27-2007, 08:59 PM It's a good tuner and a thoroughly enjoyable listen. Mine has frozen needle movements but it still works. I think I'll hang onto it, it's a great surprise performer. Prices on this unit are gaining ground as word gets out.

Cool :) Either of you guys have a nice pic of it fully lit up? The display on mine is pretty dim.
Vitopanch 07-27-2007, 10:07 PM Congrats on that. I picked one up in Quebec a few months ago and am very, very impressed with it as yall are. Sensitivity, selectivity and musicly one of the best that I have ever had or heard.

zenith2134 07-27-2007, 10:12 PM Woah - did not realize that this series Akai came in black also!! I posted in another thread today about a blackfaced Akai receiver. Nice looking in black. Can't imagine the 2600/2800 amp in black though.

I've seen pics of the tuner in black but never the amp. Rather rare according to TIC.
Kencat 08-21-2007, 09:33 PM I've a little brother AT-2200 that I bought new a long time ago. It's served me well and still does. I don't have other tuners to compare it to for sound, but it is very easy to listen to and sounds about as good as I would expect from an FM station. Maybe I need to expect more? Locks on to stations well.
Broonsbane, until I read your post, I hadn't paid a lot of attention to the lighting. Seems kinda low as well. I'll have to look to see if any bulbs are out :scratch2:
BroonsBane 08-21-2007, 09:42 PM Definitely looks like some bulbs are out, great looking tuner though!

Hi Bane, no snaps of it all lit currently. I have a Toshiba receiver doing duty until I can get the Hitachi HA-610 integrated / AT-2600 back in place. I'll take a few shots of it in afterglow when possible...

I've got the 2800 in silver but it needs work on the power supply regulator board. Perhaps one day this winter it'll receive proper attention.
zenith2134 08-21-2007, 09:56 PM Yeah my 2600/2800s silver too, I rebulbed my 2600 about 2 weeks ago since one went out. It was the first to go since I had it so I changed em all. Night and day difference in aesthetics BTW. Love this tuner. Best i've ever owned .

Afterglow shots are good! :thmbsp:
CUlater 08-21-2007, 10:21 PM Akai rocks - I've got two AT-2400s and two AM-2400s. The AM-2400 was the very first piece of stereo gear I ever bought as a teenager. Smoothest tuning feel I've ever encountered, both in their receivers and their tuners.
I'd love to find either an AT-2600 or the extremely rare (apparently since I never see them for sale on ebay) AT-2800! Congrats on your find!
BroonsBane 08-23-2007, 08:03 AM Wow, an AT-2800! I didn't know that existed, must be one heck of a tuner.
