View Full Version : Impress yourself, or your friends?
similost 07-28-2007, 12:43 AM OK, I don't know how this poll thread works, but I have this question...
Only two answers are worthwhile...
Did you build your system to impress yourself with the sound, or your friends...
nickrobotron 07-28-2007, 01:19 AM I build my system for myself, but based on a combination of sight and sound. My gear has to look good too. And when it comes to appearance, I do ask for a lot of opinions...
So whatever that means.

That's pretty intersting... in never took looks into account... I can understand that...

I'm sorry.. you really need to get out more!
Soundthought 07-28-2007, 02:38 AM I'm with jonman....
:)
Seriously, I've been searching for "that sound", and in the process have impressed, not only myself but, many of my (3) friends as well.
Regards,
John
similost 07-28-2007, 02:49 AM LOL..I'm starting to think too many of us know "Wilson" around here...
Soundthought 07-28-2007, 03:00 AM OMG......
My brother.....
Have you seen Wilson?
I've been totally lost without him since he took the "big swim", back in the day.
Oh jeez.......
What to do?......
WILSON!!!!!!
:)
similost 07-28-2007, 03:03 AM ROTF.... You made my night.. that was one hell of a good belly laugh!!!!!!!
ozmoid 07-28-2007, 09:33 AM Did you build your system to impress yourself with the sound, or your friends...I did it to please myself with the sound. If anyone else happens to appreciate or enjoy it, that's good for them. My intent was to make ME happy. :music:
Arkay 07-28-2007, 10:56 AM I know Wilson. And Johhny. And Bill. And Oscar. They sit on my shelves and stare back at me... like :yikes: and :yikes: and :yikes:.
No, just kidding. :D
I try to set up my system with SOUND as the first thing, FOR ME to listen to, but I do buy gear based partly on looks sometimes, and arrange it based partly on looks, too. Both sound and looks are important to me.
Impressing friends is much, much less important, for several reasons. First, it is not very common to invite friends over to one's home in Hong Kong (we mostly meet outside in clubs or restaurants), so not many people ever hear my system, anyway. While I enjoy sharing my finds with "friends" here on AK, that is not about impressing anyone, but just sharing the pleasure of the hobby with people who also have an appreciation for vintage gear, and who understand the "addiction". [Heck, how could a mere mortal even begin to be impressive on a board with several guys who have over 100 receivers and/or speakers, and systems like Masterlu's, and skills like EchoWars', etc...?]
I buy gear for ME, and not for anyone else. Occasionally, I buy something with my wife in mind, but she is not into audio the way I am, and doesn't collect (wishes I would collect less, in fact). I consider others' opinions of gear as a guide to picking components I'm more likely to like, since it is impossible to get and try out everything. Others' opinions also affect resale value, which I factor into purchase decisions, but none of this is a deciding factor. Ultimately, I buy what I think I will enjoy owning and listening to. (Probable) sound and looks both play a role. I will buy a plain-looking speaker that is known to sound wonderful, and I will buy a really funky/neat looking vintage oddity like a novelty receiver, even though it might not sound great. Most gear I want to meet both requirements: Great sound, and at least good looks. I would like to one day share my gear with others (like some of you get to do at the AK fests), but that is not an option nor an issue for now. I buy what I want to own and listen to.
OvenMaster 07-28-2007, 11:58 AM I built my system for me, me, me. Sound quality first, but I also do need to be able to smile when I look at the system. Believe me, I do smile! :D

I'm exactly the same way.
I'm probably more of a nit-picker when it comes to aesthetics than I should be...but meh.
JJJimmy 07-28-2007, 03:30 PM Absolutely for me, since music is a huge part of my life. However, it doesn't hurt when someone who knows what you have and says "nice stuff":thmbsp:
onepixel 07-28-2007, 04:03 PM Not out to impress anyone or me. Just looking to put together the best possible system(s) and having lots of fun while I go.
BULLWINKLE 07-28-2007, 06:29 PM Self...... but, I don't mind if others are impressed.

MYSELF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
McMagMan 07-30-2007, 03:05 PM Not out to impress anyone or me. Just looking to put together the best possible system(s) and having lots of fun while I go.
I'm with onepixel. What is most important is that you should like your system and want to listen to it. You have to live with it on a daily basis. I share with people what I have and I'm open to constructive criticism but in the end it's MY SYSTEM. :music:

I sure do agree with the constructive criticism part. I've learned a lot from friends that have come over and pointed out settings, or even pieces that would sound a little better... some have been wrong for my ears, others have been nice improvements...
I'm more for sound than looks, but others are right, it sure doesn't hurt to be able to look and say WOW... hhhmm.. for some reason, the system I have now just doesn't do that for me, Not like my first system I build while in Germany... but it sure sounds better than any other I've had..
Fran604g 08-03-2007, 03:53 PM Me, myself and I...anyone else is incidental...
panhead 08-03-2007, 04:00 PM I built my hi end rig to entertain myself but as was stated above i wanted it to look kick ass too,im not a black box kinda guy & styling is important to both myself & my wife,i work hard & have saved for decades so why shouldnt i have the best i can afford, its in my living space so it has to look good as well as sound good.
My vintage collection is another story,i started collecting vintage gear & select speakers just for the rarity of the stuff then it kinda became something just to show off.
I gotta admit it makes me feel good when somebody see's my vintage stuff for the 1st time & they cant get over how beautiful the stuff is.
jim w. 08-11-2007, 12:55 PM im impressed rite now , cuz standing between my speakers it sounds like the music is coming from the walls!!:scratch2:
stereodctr 08-12-2007, 02:01 AM I built my current system for myself, with an emphasis on sound quality, I am not very concerned if anyone else is impressed with it or not. Back in the 70's when I was concerned about peer envy my system was built primarily to impress my friends and sound quality was secondary.
