Greetings one and all!
I'm an oldtimer around here I guess, and thought it a good idea to introduce myself to the new members.
I'm sneaking up on the milestone of 50 years of age. I've been married to the same wonderful woman for 28 years this October. We have three adult children that we are immensely proud of, two thru college and our middle son is starting his second year of Med school.
My audio journey isn't typical or maybe it is?! I bought my first system when I was 18 years old, Sansui G-3000 receiver, Sansui SP-5500X speakers and a Sanyo direct drive tt. I sold it three and half years later when my oldest son was learning to walk and getting into trouble with the gear. The Misses asked that I sell it all, so I made the stipulation that at one point when we could afford it I would buy what I wanted.
So for twenty odd years I listened to a boom box, car audio and later bought a small BPC surround setup because we never really could afford to spend the money on something other than the needs of our children.
I had fond memories of the Sansui with all those big silver knobs and how good it sounded and wanted another one only bigger. At the time I was new to the internet and I stumbled a crossed a Sansui G-22000 on a web page at very reasonable price. I purchased it and the started looking for more info about it because it arrived d.o.a. During that search I was invited by an AKer to join AK. Which I did after the usual lurking period of a week or so. Once I joined I received a lot help on a variety of topics. I was hooked!
Since then I've learned a great deal about audio, but by no means am an expert. The first thing that appealed to me was learning how to refoam speakers since about all I knew about things electrical was how to plug them in and turn them on/off, you know basically nada... Over the years I've paid attention and have become somewhat handy at speaker repair and enjoy bringing the old ones back to life as a part time hobby.
I highly recommend going to AKfest that is held every spring. I've been to three of them and enjoyed everyone of them. It's a great time to get together and spend time with like minded people that share the same passion for audio. It is there that I learned the most about what I liked in stereo gear and some of what I didn't like, which was usually at home :).
With a lot of help from my friends here, I have put my dream system together and am very close to having it complete. Which goes to show if I can do it anyone can!
Last but not least I help out as time permits to moderate AK, which is pretty easy because of the great group of members we have here. I am honored to help out the fine people that make up the AK Staff and proud to call them my friends.
Sincerely
Army
