Pretty sure similar stories have been told here before. I had a huge interest for HiFi in highschool times already. Had started with a Dual TT, then a Technics 1310 MK II and a Scott SS receiver with yellow VU meters IIRC, and some Bose 901 that were followed immediately, I swear within a few months by a pair JBL 3-ways, the Horizons. Later I swapped the Scott for a Marantz 4270 and kept that rig for the next 25 years – rocksolid sound and plenty dynamics, completely satisfied, no call for action anymore.
Some years back I found out that my gear now belongs to a category called "vintage". Learned that when I was searching the net for woofer refoaming tips – of course my L166's haven't been untroubled by that. Well the interest raised again, and I started to get together another rig that I would not have been able to afford back in 70's. The pleasant part was to find out that my gear of that time doesn't pale soundwise in comparision to todays products – it's rather the other way round. The dark side was – vintage wasn't inexpensive anymore. Couldn't that damn 12" woofers have the surrounds rotted a bit earlier???
Sold that 4270 and found a 4400 locally. And got nuts about JBL again. When I discovered the Lansing Heritage site I was in heaven – there are more out there like me! Quickly it got out of hand from there, and I had picked up more than I need – mostly JBLs of course.
Recently I entered the world of tubes where I am still a newbie. Enough said I guess – the journey goes on.
