Tonight I was offered a TEAC 3300-SX reel to reel tape deck. It is the model that is 2-track, with the plaque in the lower right corner, identical with the one AKer Orcinus has pictured here: http://www.audiokarma.org/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=3226
Cosmetically, it's about an 8.5 or 9 out of 10: there are a few small scratches or marks on the wooden side panels, but the metal looks shiny and undamaged. Generally it looks very nice. It appears to have been taken care of and used until recently. It has both of the big (adjustable) hub things. There is a little tape oxide build-up on the capstans/rollers, but not excessive. I can't be sure about the heads, but they looked okay as far as I could see.
It comes with three ten-inch reels of tape (2 are Maxells; I don't remember what kind of tape the other one was, but it was on a TEAC reel) still in original boxes and in good shape, and a DIN type of cable connector, which looks so-so (needs DeOxit on the contacts, I think).
The seller wants me to name a price. I don't think they know the value of this unit at all, however they DO know that a Revox B-77 sold for three hundred bucks (and I would have paid that much for it, except for a snafu). When I balked at naming the first price, they suggested $250, which is way too high. But they were only basing it on the Revox, which of course is not a fair comparison, and being hopeful. They realize that now, and I have a chance to come back with a realistic counter-offer tomorrow.
How much is this worth? What would be a bargain price, a fair price, or a high price? I'd like to get it for sixty, but I doubt they'll sell it for less than a hundred-something. I might be okay with that, if this model is WORTH it, but I'm not sure.
Any advice/recommendations? Thanks!
