View Full Version : Atlanta CL: Polk SDA-2B speaker pair $100 (!)
GordonW 08-03-2007, 04:11 PM Was gonna go get these myself, but I just can't find the time to go over there. A bit off the beaten path, but a good deal, for someone who can get there:
http://atlanta.craigslist.org/ele/388353624.html
I actually had emailed the guy, and asked him some questions, before it became apparent I couldn't go. In the email, he confirmed that they were INDEED SDA-2B's... in fact, here's some of the questions I asked and his answers:
Here are the specs from Polk.
The speakers have a 1" dome tweeter and two 6.5" drivers and one 12" passive radiator, the overall frequency response is from 20Hz to 26kHz and the -3dB limits are 38Hz to 20kHz. The recommended amplification is from 30 to 350 Watts/channel the impedance is 6 Ohms and the efficiency is 89.7 dB.
Still have the original boxes these came in.
These speakers, I believe, should have a special connector cable, that goes between the two cabinets (in addition to the normal speaker wires to the amp). Do you have the cable? - yes
Is everything working in the speakers (both woofers and the tweeter in each cabinet)? - yes
I suggest SOMEBODY go GET THESE!! :zoom:
Regards,
Gordon.

avguytx 08-03-2007, 04:54 PM Definitely some great speakers. I have some SDA 1C's, SDA SRS2's (main system) and Monitor 10B's. All are great sounding speakers and with some crossover "freshening" and replacing the older SL2000 tweeters with the newer POlk RD0-194's, they are even sweeter. The SL2000 tweeter has a 5db peak around 13 or 14kHz which some people don't mind, others do. (it works for me for now)
A great deal for someone to be had. What are you guys waiting for???
sauvong 08-03-2007, 06:25 PM Just picked up a pair of Monitor 10's, can't tell if they are 10B's though. Can someone look at my main system link and tell me what model they are. I was running Ar3a's until I hooked these up. My dad who is 57 came into the room and heard an old song and was like...is that a new version of that song...I told him it was the same song and he was like..."where the hell all those instruments come from?" hahaha...They have always been there, we just never heard it with the other speakers. We have heard Infinity RS6 Kappa's, Infinity RSM, Ar3a's, and now these ones. I have gone through 4 pairs of speakers in less then a year so far looking for audio nirvana. I have read that the SDA's are even better then the Monitor 10's so now my eyes are open for a pair. Would definitely get those if I was closer. Someone better RUN!

Johncan 08-03-2007, 06:31 PM I am off at Tybee Island... wish I was around. These are great speakers.

Those look like (my) Monitor 10B's but it typically says on the terminal cups...at least mine do. 10B's have the SL2000 tweeters and MW6503 woofers, 10B's from 1984/85 will have the same mids but SL1000 tweeters. But, without removing the drivers and checking them, it's really hard to say. Here's a link (http://clubpolk.polkaudio.com/service/models/modelpartslist.php3?model=monitor) to the Polk Parts site and maybe that will help you to confirm. You can do some crossover upgrades with Solen caps (or Dayton, etc) and Mills resistors for a minimal amount and it will open those babies up even more. Also, there is a new version of the SL2000 tweeter that I mentioned in a post above (RD0-194's) that help smooth them out even more. Great speakers and very listenable. The 10's were one of the best for the money they produced and one of the top sellers as you can see why.
I own 2 pairs of SDA's...love 'em.

Strangeband 08-03-2007, 09:02 PM Well, I'm fairly close to Loganville, but I'm off for a quick two day summit in the mountains tomorrow and still owe John for a cartridge. I hope some local AKer grabs 'em.

Hmm. The cups don't say anything on them so I just pulled the tweeters. Now I am even more confused. The tweeters say SL2000 on them but the dates show a Nov 1, 1985 stamped in ink and then a printed test date of Oct 31, 1985 (Halloween! SPOOKY:sigh:). I think I have 10B's then but from what you said about the dates. Maybe it's near the end of the year and they switched over to the SL2000 Tweets???

avguytx 08-03-2007, 10:12 PM Oh, there are tons of variances of drivers and crossover layouts. My pair of SDA 1C's had different versions of crossovers than some of the others even though they had the same parts. They joke that it must have been "mary jane day" at Polk when those were made. Sometimes there were transitions from one model to another or if there was a surplus of parts that needed to go away. Which mids do you have? 6500's, 6501's or 6503's?

What the devil, or rather speak of the devil! Just did a CL on the slim chance. They are kinda beat up, are they worth it for $150? I don't get paid until Friday the 10th, I hope they will still be available. Okay, the mids are, 6503's.

avguytx 08-03-2007, 10:31 PM Sounds like you have the Monitor 10B's then. Great speakers.
$150 isn't too bad a deal but they do look a little weathered. You could get a replacement passive for that one with a tear in it as they show up on Ebay from time to time. I don't know. I'd have to see them up close and maybe lowball a $100 offer and see where it went. The mids could be cleaned up with some Windex as could the passives. The grill cloth would have to be replaced which isn't the worst thing ever to do. But it depends on how bad "chipped" the cabinets are, too. See if you can go look at them even before you get paid. At least you'll know then how much you want them.

SDA-2B's $120 Los Gatos. Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.:D
Thanks for the all help on the Monitor 10B identification. I have noticed with my 10B's that they don't crank too well, with my ar3a's the volume can get really high and blast your ears. The 10B's, it gets loud but its not the same, the listening volume seems to be from around 8'o'clock to 12'o'clock on the volume knob, anything beyond that sounds like I am stretching the limits of the speakers.
