It's the 10th anniversary of Frank Zappa's departure. If you have some Mother's, play it. If not, any old stuff will do.

I've got about a half dozen of Frank's fine masterworks plus some M.O.I. but cannot play any vinyl yet as I still have not found an affordable record cleaning brush of high enough quality (it has to work without ruining the record).

Frank Z, you are missed!

Then just hum or whistle one of his tunes. It's the little things that count.

It's nice to know that those defending our freedom are listening to quality tunes over those Bose headphones.......

Thanks Lee. I miss that guy so much it hurts. Hurts deep down. All because of an overlooked, TREATABLE thing like prostate cancer. How sad.

I celebrate his birthday as well. 21 December. I'm going to throw down a healthy shot of Gosling's Black Seal rum right now. Then I'm going to throw one into the dirt. One for me, one for him.

TA - man I'd overlooked today's date. Just two weeks ago I was reading in a guitar magazine the last interview they did with FZ. They had reprint it in it's entirety.

I'm sitting here holding my favorite Zappa album of the 80's - You Are What You Is. Getting ready to drop it on the TT.

Right now I'm listening to Fine Girl. You gotta love lyrics like these:

"Well, yeah, well
Oh yeah
She was a fine girl
She could get down wit de get down
All de way down
She do yer laundry
She change a tire
Chop a little wood for de fire
Poke it around...if it died down

Oh yeah
She was a fine girl
She go up in the mornin'
She go down in the evenin'...all de way down
She do the dishes
If you wishes
Silverware too
Make it look brand new...when she get through
Oh yeah
She was a fine girl
Outa this world

Well, yeah, well, yeah, well, yeah, well
Oh yeah
She was a fine girl
She could get down wit de get down
All de way down
She do your laundry
She change a tire
Chop a little wood for de fire
Poke it around...if it died down

Oh yeah
She was a fine girl
With a lovely smile
With a bucket on her head
Fulla water from de well
She could run a mile
Oh yeah
She wouldn't spill a drop
It'd stay on top
Her head was kinda flat
But her hair covered that
She was a fine girl
Didn't need no school
She was built like a mule
With a thong sandal
Well, wasn't no kinda job she could not handle
She could get down...wit de get down
All de way down
We need some more like dat in dis kinda town
We need some more like dat in dis kinda town
We need some more like dat in dis kinda town
We need some more like dat in dis kinda town...
We need some more like dat... "

Thanks for the memory TA.

Watch out where the huskies go and dont you eat that yellow snow.

And just the other day I was singing Valley Girl to my Daughter. :D :uzi:

Got to see him in 73 I think. What a show.....

I do love the box album set : Shut up 'n play your guitar. Been played about 5 times. RIP.

I always liked his music without lyrics much more than his stuff WITH lyrics. I liked some of the stuff with lyrics, but after awhile the stuff started to sound a little sophomoric. From about 1968-1973, my whole crowd of friends and I would go to see him whenever he came within 50 miles of N.Y.C.

To be honest, I didn't enjoy anything with lyrics much after 1974 or so. However, it matters not what I think, as long as you play the mans music. He certainly was prolific, with some 50 or 60 albums released before his departure. He launched a lot of peoples careers as well. Played for his band, and your ticket was punched.

I had forgotten. I was checking out that AU-999 with a copy of Hot Rats. Maybe it was a ghost.

Ironically, we were listenning to Apostrophe/Overnight Sensation at about 9:00PM the day he died. I think he passed about the same time.

I wonder how many "normal" people realize (besides his brilliantly eccentric composer's sensibility) what an excellent guitarist he was. My son (who's becoming a big Zappa fan at the age of 16) and I were listening to "Stink-Foot" on a compilation CD he'd burned last night. Bitchen guitar solo on that one...

I agree. He was an awesome guitar player ! been listening to his stuff since i was 17. Sheik Yerbouti remains one of my all time fav albums.

The most underrated guitbox man in history. For me it's a toss-up between him and Brother Jimi for the top slot.

Ski, you already know that if I could take only one album to the proverbial deserted island, it would be "Hot Rats". My favorite all-time hunk of music.

I know I'm late to this party TA, but I'm gonna start in memory of Frank with something from 'Joe's Garage'...

...then freak out with 'Jazz From Hell' and 'The Yellow Shark'. These last two were brilliant compositionally, but almost every time I listen to them they drive me :nutz: That just goes to prove FZ's genius!

Man, I can't believe I missed this post before....my brother, 7yrs my senior, turned me on to the Sheik Yerbouti album way back and I was hooked!

I listen to Apostrophe at work all the time (one of the few i can get away with). All totaled, I think I have about 13-14 albums, just scratched the surface. The man was simply genius.

Frank...Come Back!!!!!

If Frank, Buddy Rich, or Sinatra aren't back, then there ain't no coming back.

"The Yellow Shark" is awesome stuff, with some great low end. Great taste there AudioGeek.

Yeah - the bottom end on that record is . It's one of the recordings I used to use to demo my REL Stentor III.

300 watts continuous RMS of toroidial transformered glory, with 600 watts of clean peak, low-passed @ 28Hz, with useable output (-6dB) all the way down to 11Hz. Oooh, BAY-bee!

Now I know the answer to, "Why Does It Hurt When I Pee?" :lmao:

Perhaps you'd like to hear it thundering out of my Carver Amazings, each one being driven by a kilowatt bridged amp?

TA,

How come we were all told that the recent east coast power blackout originated in Ohio? :boink:

"I would, I would!" Pete pleaded.
Darn-tootin' I'd like to hear it on Toasted's he-man rig!
Wouldn't hear it better less'n it was live, that's what I say.
Mebbe at djronc's with TWO pair of the Amazing Platinum's, but I don't think he's pushing 'em with a kilowatt per side ...

I thought everybody knew how good he was?
The good, they die too young.

This post got me to hook up my TT and listen to 'Apostrophe'. My wife asked me to hook it up a month ago, at least. Cleaned and dusted my gear about three months ago and left the TT in a box....

"Over-nite Sensation' is next....

"The Maestro" did it friend, not me. You just forgot he was there. Waiting. Play Montana, and 50-50 for me. LOUD. As crazy as it is, he's giving you HIS whole story on 50-50.

TA -

No dis' intended to your Carver's and arc-welder's, but I'd say that I'd probably still prefer the big REL's sound. Cleaner, more accurate, more like the real thing IMHO, especially from the start of low bass (40Hz) on down.

Remember - I had it XO'ed at 28Hz, so those 600W+ peaks were concentrated in the Earthquake Zone. When coupled with the mid- and upper-bass response of the Nautilus 803's (2 x 7" per side)which were driven by the 225W of tube power per side that I had- it was something to behold. :alien: O Hail Yass!

Tho' I'm sure you can move more sheer air volume with the 3 or 4 12" units in each of the Amazing's.

I've had a slew of subs, active and passive, and none of 'em could touch what the Sten III can do, with the possible exception of the old powered Entec LF-series (I had a pair of LF-20's), and the passive Kinergetcs SW-800's I had with my CLS IIa 'stats. The SW-800's I drove with a pair of Lazarus H1A mono's and an ARC EC22 active X-over, and that was a bass rig that kicked ALL serious forms of ass!. It could move massive air and be accurate. (4 x 10" per side) Uber Bass! :smoke:

I've always found almost any sub doesn't do its best if putting out much above 80Hz or so. At that point, to me it's not a "sub" woofer any more, it's just a woofer.
