Hi ya'all!

Quick Bio...born in Kansas City, Missouri, graduated HS in Lee's Summit. It was in HS that I discovered real high-fidelity when an older friend cranked up some tunes on a nice Dynaco/Dual/Shure/Altec VOTT setup, and I was hooked. Although I was studying auto mechanics and journalism at the time, audio became the reason I studied electronics in college.

Tough to make a living with that audio stuff, though, and after graduation I took a job as a robotics tech and moved to Boise, ID. Lots of job changes, and several moves later (lived in Austin, TX, Chandler, AZ, and Colorado Springs, CO), I ended up back in Kansas City. With the high-tech industry being what it is here in the Midwest, I simply have started to work for myself...fixing all that cool 70's gear that none of us could afford when it was new.

My technical background is such that, the equipment I worked on before in the print and semiconductor industry HAD to be fixed right the first time, or you weren't going to have a job for long. Once I started doing repairs on audio gear, I discovered that there's a LOT of guys out there that do NOT have this attitude with regard to amplifiers and receivers and such. As long as I can continue to do this the way that I want (take my time and see that it is done right), I'll do so. Or at least until someone decides to give me a real job (back in Boise would be nice, thank you...)

Lot of great guys on this website, and I've made many friends. Hang around, and you can do the same.

Less than 2-1/2 hours from Lincoln the way I drive. Some day I need to stop by with a few brewskis for a visit.
Just last Wendesday I made it through from Harrisonville to I-435 to I-29 at 80+ mph--yup going through Lee's Summit I though about you
Damn all--when are they ever going to finish that construction at the big intersection? I did loose speed through that area.

EW's thread on Amplifier Distortion, DC offset... gave me just enough info to realize that I could take on more than just spraying down the switches and polishing the faceplate. Was able to dial in a couple of receivers using his instructions and have taken on a few other repairs since.

Thanks for sharing your expertise.

I've never met the man but I've done enough business, had enough PM's and email correspondence that I do have an opinion about EchoWars the man.

Not only is the man smart but he's a snappy dresser too. . . LOL. . .

Rather than turn these threads into "I love me" threads lets just say that the man is a true legend and we got him all to ourselves. . .

That's a big thing. . .

No excuses. My kids live in Olartha. One of these days I like to meet you Glen. Told me how to get the cover off a tuner in a big honkin Pioneer SX 1980. After that I was able to get her fixed up. God that receiver sounded sweet on my bench hooked to JBL !00's. Cant afford one but got a cool SX 850 that took care of the bug!!! It sounds good on the bench and is my tester for things I work on.

One of these days Glen!

Thanks for all you do to keep the good old gear running Glenn. Here's to you EW!

I met Glenn at the Fest last year, & he's one of those guys you instantly feel at ease with, like you've known him all your life...And he's one of those rare individuals who can "splain" the wizardry he does-some of it, anyway-in a manner where us mere mortals can understand.

Hey Glenn, it's been a pleasure knowing you and hanging with you from time to time over the last several years. Looking forward to seeing you at Army's place next month. I just picked up a boatload of Genesis albums from the local Salvation Army with the cellophane still on the album jakets and the albums look almost untouched. Should I bring those down, are we going to have a turntable there? Are you bringing one up?

Secondly, I really appreciate the work you've done on all my Pioneer SPEC equipment, and the way you explain the things that need fixing. What impresses me the most about your work on my gear, is how you treat it as if it were your gear. I don't believe there are many Technicians out there that can say, or do that.

Not that everyone doesn't already know (AK Member of the Year for 3 years), but Glenn is truely an irreplaceable asset to Audio Karma. To me though, I think I'll just keep referring to him as "my good friend!"

While I generally question information I read on the internet, or at least do more research than one person's posts, that isn't the case with echowars. If he makes a suggestion, he may be the only person on the site I would follow without reservation. Probably the single best technical asset I have come across on any site and from the 5-10 minutes I got to talk to him at the fest 2 years ago, a very nice guy to boot.

I am still extremely grateful I stumbled across AK when my beloved Marantz died. Two different sets of idiots at "Repair shops" said there was nothing that could be done to repair it.

I sent out an SOS for help in the KC area on AK and everyone pointed to EW's. I am so very lucky to live within 20 minutes of him and now have my wonderful 2250B up and roaring again. :music:

He kindly tried to explain what was wrong with it - what he did to repair it, but I speak medical terminology, not electronic technical. No matter - he took great care of my Marantz.

A brilliant and kind man. :thmbsp:

I will never forget my one and only visit to the EW castle to deliver my SX-1250, and seeing the array of receivers and amps on the floor all awaiting parts and service. Got a tour of some great classics (all broken of course, but still!). In 5 minutes he had the cover off mine and was poking around with a running commentary of what always goes wrong with this particular unit. He's obsessed! :lazer: The best kind of freak when your stuff is broken.

Hope to visit again when there's time to have tunes and beverages. Maybe a KC minifest will develop. :thmbsp:

The amazing thing that I'm sure a lot of us experienced since joining AK was going from having almost zero knowledge or interest in vintage audio to having it become an important part of our lives. I think Glenn has played a large role in shedding the light on this hobby/obsession for many of us newbies. I stumbled across this site quite randomly. If not for a series of seemingly insignificant events, I would have never even made the connection to vintage audio, let alone repairing anything electronic. And I wouldn't have found all the wonderful things that comes with it (rediscovering vinyl for example). I believe many of the best and most rewarding experiences come to us spontaneously.

I've had several technical discussions with Glenn on PM about a variety of units that I've tinkered around with (at first out of curiosity and for practice), and eventually I was even able to do some minor work and troubleshooting that has helped me discover that I can do several types of repairs, and get a big kick out of learning about all the stuff that goes into Solid State equipment. I even got inspired to take a course in Electronics a short time later.

I came to AK by way of seeing a link at the bottom of one of 'Pete the Bully''s posts at Audio Asylum.:thmbsp:
One of the first posts to have really caught my eye was this one:

http://audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=4641&highlight=Kenwood+9100+700C+phono&page=5

It's now just over four years old(and I've resurrected it once more.....).:D
Anyway there was a fellow who posted on it by the moniker of 'EchoWars'.He seemed to know a bit,and kinda was an advocate of Kenwood(though he said they were all good).
In retrospect it was EW's advocacy of the 700 series a little later, which opened a lot of people's eyes to a set of forgotten gems.
Besides enlightening us regarding the Supreme Series, this man(who it's reputed)never sleeps, prefers to spend the time when he hasn't got a soldering-iron in his hand guidng lost souls on AK with tips and helpful suggestions.
In this way he has endeared himself to countless thousands(cue flower-petals being strewn from rooftops),and resurrected to far better than new, many a vintage audio masterpiece which would otherwise be dumpster-bound.:tears:
Let us therefore pay homage to this giant amongst solder jockeys, and raise our voices(and our glasses)to shout vigorously:

:ntwrthy:"Hail,EchoWars!!
May he forever tinker."

Glenn is a priceless resource on AK. I have an EW'd SX-1980 that went to Glenn working, but with disappointing sound, and came back as one of my favorite pieces. That's the essence of what he does, the exact opposite outcome to GIGO, and it's the result of a talented electrical engineer applying knowledge to a long-running passion, with a lot of common sense. Rare enough, all three, and rarer still together.
