Does S-V.H.S. is real better than V.H.S - I'm talking here about the image and sound that is that reproduced, the qualty at copying. I heared that heads (drums) for S-V.H.S. are hard to find.

As far as prerecorded tapes are concerned SVHS is usually much better than VHS.

Off the top of my head I think VHS is 240 lines of resolution, while SVHS is 400 or something close to that. SVHS will give you better quality recordings as well. Just remember that SVHS is still analog. As far as sound quality difference is concerned I think they are the same same as they both carry two channel, and some dolby surround. If you want to take a big step ahead in quality you can use DVHS for your recordings, you can pick up those machines for pretty cheap since the format died.

Which system are you looking for? PAL,SECAM,NTSC ?

P.A.L./SECAM, if possbile to have N.T.S.C. (unleass in play-back mode).
About D-V.H.S.: I live in Romania and I don't think there are more than few of those here (possible to find not even single D-V.H.S. V.C.R. here).

I can only speak for the NTSC system. I had a Sony's first SVHS machine when Sony got into the VHS camp.It was the SLV-R5 and was great when it worked.Easily besting VHS in picture quality. I used to rent a lot of laserdiscs vs. buying them and would make personal copies. The tapes were almost as good as the LD. This machine really had problems and eventually it just crapped out. This model was only around for a year or so and was replaced by the SLV-R100 (or R1000). A friend had one and they were great.

I still use a VCR to play my kid's tapes and sometimes to record; I have a JVC S-VHS recorder, and now that SVHS tapes are so cheap I tend to use them. I find the video quality noticeably better on tapes I record on SVHS instead of VHS; the resolution is much closer than VHS to original programming. I've rarely seen any prerecorded SVHS tapes so I really can't comment, but when I'm taping something I'll want to keep, SVHS is definitely higher quality. Remember though that you must have SVHS inputs on your TV to take advantage of the higher resolution the SVHS format offers.

Exactly! it always drives me crazy when everyone, especially back in the '80s, always referred to S VIDEO cable as S-VHS cable!! even the manufacturers did it sometimes!!!!:thumbsdn::no::nono:

And the way I've read it, the S is for Separated, because the chroma is separated from the luminance.

Bottom line is S-VHS is way better than VHS in the image department. Audio gets encoded the same way so it's the same.
I've had a S-VHS since 1991 and still use it occasionally to record.

S-VHS looks a lot better than VHS. Record in SP mode and you get the best you can out of the format.

S-video connectors separate chrominance and luminance in the signal, hence the name. They have nothing, per se, to do with S-VHS, but the connection provides a cleaner image, much like component connections.

You can see the difference between S-VHS and regular VHS easily through any kind of connector; I had an old TV and had to use just the antenna modulator, and even there, there was no comparison to regular VHS.

Best,
Claus.

We used S-VHS when they were avab for installs years ago for the better video quality, for the tape collection. But hadn't had any new units in 3 or 4 years here. JVC and Mit were the last ones.
