Hi, folks. It's been about a year and a half since I bought my first piece of vintage audio and subsequently found AK. Thrift stores, garage sales, and word of mouth have brought me an avalanche of gear since then. I enjoy vintage gear partly because of the attractive cost/value ratio and partly because I enjoy anachronisms. Though I generally feel like dope-slapping people who use the expression, I feel like I was "born too late."

I still delude myself into thinking that this isn't a permanent hobby. I plan to have one main system that I can be happy with, restore it and tweak it as much as is feasible, and respectfully bow out of actively collecting vintage audio. Of course, once I move out of my parents' house, I'll probably need more than one system. Room for a permanent workbench would probably get me excited about learning how to do more bench work, causing me to haul home more dead equipment. And then there's always AK to fuel the fire... In the meantime, I keep stockpiling vastly more components than I ever intend to use myself with no readily profitable way of getting rid of them. You might say I've got the bug.

Though I've been an enthusiastic music nerd for years, upgrading my stereo has brought a great deal of new joy to my listening. After finally settling into the first TT/cartridge combo that I can honestly say I like, more and more of my home listening is done with vinyl. My LP collection has gotten out of control and a goodly number of my current audio wants are supplies and accessories for playing and preserving it.

The Marantz 510M that started the whole thing still isn't fixed, but it's in good company with several other pieces waiting on repair or restoration according to my time, money, and whether or not I feel like a professional is needed.

I'm 24 and graduated last spring with a BA in Lit (having taken a rather passive view of my after-college prospects). Currently, I'm still working at the record store, flirting with the idea of gainful employment after a few jobs that failed to transition into "steady work."

Look for me here - high plains driftin', mid-fi thriftin', trying out various creepy MJ avatars, planning to send Grumpy some dough for a subscription and a couple-few classifieds, and above all enjoying the music.

Howdy, Pardner.

Just keep those hands where I can see them.

Hey Winters,

Good to hear from you. Hope you get the 510 up and running soon! And I'm finally getting used to your avatar. The other ones were entertaining too.

Cheers,
Carl

I see the avatar as a microcosm for Micheal before surgeries and how he will eventually look...:scratch2::D

Nice to meet you man...

Almost a year since I started this thread - I thought I'd revive it for the newbies wondering who in the hell the guy with the Michael Jackson avatar is. :D

I got the 510M fixed and I'm another year older - other than that, very little has changed. To my southwestern Ohio brothers (and potentially sisters), I'll be the one swooping in on your CL deals...

Hi, winters!

I still delude myself into thinking that this isn't a permanent hobby.
More of a permanent part of our lives that we treat like a hobby. :D

Nice to have you here, Man.
