bought a pair of BIC Acoustech H-100.

What impresses me is 24 Hz -3dB!! That is real low bass response.

It's strange that you bought those as I was just looking at that same line of speakers on
that webpage just yesterday! :para:
Let me know how they sound once you get them set up. :thmbsp:

I understand this line was designed with the assistance of Hsu. I almost sprung for a pair of their bookshelf speakers. High efficiency but at only 13 lbs. per cab, I passed.

Yes, that is what I understand, too (designed with Hsu).
Back in 1999 or 2000 I bought 3 pairs of the BIC RtR-123, a compact 12-inch, 3-way speaker system, for my HT system. MSRP $199 and a real competitor at that price-point. I paid much less. They are decent sounding speakers. No real reason I replaced them in the HT, but you understand this hobby is addictive and we tend to buy buy buy

Just got finished watching something on one of the HBO channels and it had low bass throughout. The four subwoofers had the room shaking.
Maybe I didn't need these new ones, but what the heck.

I hope you have enough mids and high to keep the balance right!

I use 4 DIY subs in my HT (2 in my 2 channel).
These DIY subs are not just thrown together without regard to T/S parameters or box size and configuration (sealed or ported).
They are 3.5 cu. ft. sealed and use NHT 1259 12" drivers. The boxes are cross braced, and have 2" thick front baffles. They are EQ'd with an Audio Control PCA. SAE 2600 amplification.
There is a definite advantage to having more than 1 or even 2 subs in the room. Beside the obvious fact that you will obtain high levels of bass, the real advantage is that multiple subs tend to smooth out the response, and provide truly deep bass that's not boomy.
"True" subs should be able to provide bass response in the 5-10Hz region at about 110db, and 20-40Hz at 115db or better. This kind of bass is very expensive >10k, but very impressive. Necessary? Probably not. But 20Hz at 110db is, in my opinion, is necessary.

I just bought my 5th SVS. This time a dual 12 "NSD" 600 watt 899.00 that will go to 12-14 or so and it is in their entry level line. Best buy they have in reality. I'm content with it tuned to 20Hz.
btw. . .We are in agreement concerning 110dB at 20Hz

I am well aware of SVS, and, from the reviews they seem to have what it takes for infra-sonic bass at high volume. I'm not crazy about the built in amps, though. I prefer passive subs with an outboard amp, like a Carver "Z" model Tripath amp. I believe SVS still makes passive subs:scratch2: I haven't been to their site in a while. Sounds like a visit is in order.
The HSU with the turbocharger vent extensions has gotten good reviews as well.
Have to watch out for that TT rumble:yes:
I was thinking in terms of REL, Entech, and the behemoth Velodyne with an
18" and 15" driver and a 5000W amp:banana: (Might be wrong on the wattage; I'm going from memory) Not even sure if they still (ever?) make them...
Even though I prefer sealed box systems, the SVS and SHU subs are a great way to get real bass, without taking out a second:thmbsp:

I started using subs in the early 70s. Spent many years with JBL's B380 (15in) and B460 (18in) driven by Adcom GFA565s or a bridged 555 using a JBL crossover.
They were loud as hell, punchy and very impressive but really had nothing under about 40Hz. . . In the mid to late 80s Definitive Technology was the rage. This was just before the monster servos like Velodyne etc came out. M&K also had a good sub in those days. . .
Suddenly everybody had a powered subwoofer. . .I tried Klipsch's big one plus most of the TOTL guys of the period. Of course there comes a price point you just can't reach so DIY comes to play.
I also spent several years using a DIY Dane with 4 twelves compound loaded. That guy was ruler flat to 20Hz which was enough in those days, still is for the most part. Anyway long story short my speaker builder friend wanted his 2500 hundred dollars worth of 12in Danes back so I was without a sub and not much money either.
So finding myself with only around 350 bucks I bought my first SVS. It was a passive cylinder model 2039 plus I had an old pro amp from Audio Centron that dimmed the lights on the entire block soon as you switched it on. . . That combination sold me on SVS. . . I was floored at how much GOOD bass I got from that single cylinder. . .
Still hungry for more I bought their PB12Plus2 model an 900 watt dual 12incher that would shake the neighborhood and sound great doing it. An opertunity presented itself where I put together a package deal for a Lawyer friend who wanted a turnkey surround system with a budget of under 3 grand for display and all. . . Needless to say that sub sold him too. . .
Now I use their entry level dual 12in with a 600 watt amp. . . I actually prefer this sub to the more expensive plus model at least in my house anyway. . . I leave it tuned at 20Hz which still gets under 20 with ease and gives me enough volume to do whatever I ask it to do. . .
Excuse the long post but as you can tell I'm a true believer in good bass regardless of what you have to do to get it. . . There are lots of subs out there with many of them decent. A few are extraordinary and only a handful are truly in a class by themselves. Those are the ones I'm after. . .

Me too:D
There's something about bass...good bass. Clean, low, well damped (hence my love for sealed boxes).
I like the cylindrical shape of the SVS's. Easier to tuck away, etc... Plus, the walls cannot flex like a conventional box. Maybe I can hear it, maybe not, but that's how it works.
I remember when, back in the mid 70's, "subwoofers" were just coming into their own. Problem was, some (most?) didn't quite understand the physics of infra-sonic bass reproduction, but I digress...
Sounds like you had some really nice subs:yes: I was bitten by the DIY sub deal, and found that it was relatively easy to make my own. I bought the BassPro software and off I was. This was around '92. I built tons of 'em, gave most away, sold a few, and kept several.
I had the cabinet work outsourced, as I didn't want to turn my garage into a wood shop:no: Plus, it was actually more practical. And no long hours in the garage pissin' off my neighbors with a table saw buzzin' at 2 am:D
I gotta post some pics...:thmbsp: I need to get the systems back up and running.
Sorry for the ramble... Had a long day:boring:

Same here. But I was forced to settle for the Paradigm Reference Servo-15.
Excellent post, BTW.:thmbsp:
