View Full Version : The Story and Pics of THOR's CV's
I posted this in the for sale thread to ward but I thought I would post it here also for any new folks who haven't seen them or heard the full story.
This madness all began when our new pom puppy chewed out the surrounds of our old 10" 3 way GE speakers. I wanted to get new speakers and began reading reviews an such on the web and going to stores and listening to some. Since we party a lot I wanted bigger speakers than before. In seaching the web I came accross stuff about vintage speakers. I really liked the size, sound and look of big 3 ways and then I found some Klipsch Cornwalls on the web and they really got my juices flowing. So I made a short list of possible speakers, Cornwall, LaScalas, Chorus that had the size sound and look I wanted saved my money up and then searched the New England area for some and found 1 of each and was all set to go and get whichever pair I could get for the best deal.
Then I was telling a guy I work with about going to look at speakers and he said another guy we worked with had a "huge" set of speakers in his attic he wanted to unload. SO I call the guy and ask him what he's got. He tells me he doesn't know what they are, describes them and I was like ????? You've seen the pictures I had never seen or heard anything like what he was describing. He said the only marking on them in a little badge that says "Special Edition" and a serial #. He bought them from a neighbor who was desperate for money for $400 and that was what he wanted for them, his neighbor had bought them in Germany when he was in the service and brought them back to the US. Well I searched the web and asked on audio forums if anyone had heard of anything like these and came up empty.
Well I go see them and of course I am blown away when I see them and when I take a grill off I see the familar Cerwin Vega woofer, so I know what company made them and in smaller writing on the badge it shows the cerwin vega logo and says Cerwin Vega, he couldn't see it cuz of the dim light in his attic. We bring them down to his living room and he hooks em' up to a Sansui AU-G77X and I was like "wow" and bought them right there for $350 (i traded a pair of computer speakers to him and got $50 off the price of the CV's. Actually I ended up with the CV's ($350) and a pair of Altec Lansing Model 15's ($150) and the AU-G77X ($125) all from that guy for what I had planned on spending for just one pair of speakers.
After a lot of trial and error using 4 different recievers I have them Bi-Amped using a Sansui G-7700 and the AU-G77X and they sound unbelieveable.
It took a long time and alot of searching to find out what exactly the CV's were, I still don't know but I got close. Finally I talked to a guy at CV tech support he said the only other pair of these they have ever seen or heard of are in the Lobby at CV headquarters in the US and that theirs didn't have the grills so that mine were super rare and that they had never even recieved a call about them before. He said he didn't think they made even 12 pairs of them total and that they were real TOTL stuff. Made in Denmark in 1991 and sold for $1000 a piece. So I got ahold of a guy in CV of Denamrk and he sent me a brochure on them, he also asked around the factory and no one had ever heard or seen them. Mine are not exactly the same as the one in the brochure but they are obviously in the same family. Mine differ in that they are 51" tall 18" wide and 16" deep and slightly heavier, also mine have two 5" mids and only one tweet in the front no rear tweet. Here is the email I recieved from the CV guy in Denmark
Hello Chris,
The speaker you have bought is a special model called 1215 mkII. It was
manufactured in Denmark a long time ago.
I only have 1 brochure left which I will make a photocopy and send to
you.
I don't understand your address - where do you live??
Best regards,
Michael

WOW! Having seen your speaks many times before, I figured they must just be some wierd brand I hadn't heard of.
Then I heard they were CV's, and I figured 'yeah - i dont know their product line at all, so...'
But having heard your story now, you are extremely lucky! I'll bet they do well for your parties! eh??

Thanks argoss, I don't think CV makes anything good nowadays besides mebbe car audio stuff and pro dj gear. But there are lots of vintage CV's that can be had for a song on ebay. Geespot has a nice pair and drybasement I think has a nice pair.

I have looked at the newer CV stuff and I can honestly say that I was not impressed. For one, I do not like that "black look". Looks very cheap to me. Now, I haven't heard them so I cannot comment on that but first impressions are everything. Right!?!
I have the model D-7's from 1988. Not real old but it's been damn near 15 years. Anyway, these are nice speakers. Better than what CV is putting out today. I have enjoyed them.

Thor....looking at those pics of your CV's I can't help but admire the rich walnut finish...I used to "oil" the finish on my old CV 2000-10's once a year...CV used to make some excellent finished speakers(to go along with the excellent sound)...The finish on my current OHM FRS 7's pales in comparison to the finish on those CV's...I sold my 2000-10's to a guy who already had a pair of the 2000-15's; he was going to use mine as the rear speakers for his set-up...I checked some old Stereo Review Buyer's guides & Audio Buyer's Guide I have kicking around from the early '90's but their was no mention of the MK II 1215...were they only made in Denmark ? After the 2000 line was discontinued in '87 I thought CV had gotten away from any TOTL stuff with the great walnut finish...as I remember the 2000-15's (TOTL) in the mid-80's went for around $1100.00/each(mslp)....those MK II 1215'S & the story about them blow's me away...was there any woofer surround rot or scatchs/dents in the speakers...God , they were up in an attic of all places !!!! ENJOY....argoss.....
Nope no rot, though I think they could benefit from being redone since they are of 1991 ish vintage, the red around the woofers has faded and is more of an orange, there are no dents on any woofers and very few blemishes on the cabs anywhere and then only if you look real, real close. I believe they were only made in Europe. Here are some more pics:
Thor,
That's all of your setup in Pic #1?
Just curious, where is your source (i.e. in your case you PC)? Do you have some sort of wireless RF thing going there or are there some unseen i/c's to your soundcard tracing off picture?
I would like to thank Ward for sharpening up my pics.
And no comments from you wiseasses about my components ;), these pics were taken when I first got the CV's and that black plastic piece of crap is long gone :D
Sometime I will post the pics and story of my Altec Lansing Model 15's that I rescued from that same attic for $150. As we loaded them in my truck a mouse jumped outta the port on one  When I got them home the mouse had been living in one and had hoarded about 20lbs of sunflower seeds  Actually I can post the pics now and I already told the story :D I got them for $150 because he said one woofer was bad, one was the speder (i think it is called) came unglued from the base, and that woofer needed a definite refoam ( a rat shack woofer is filling in until I can send them out to the Altec guys, Great plains, White plains, whatever they are)
Here is what they looked like when I got them home:
http://www.printroom.com/_vti_bin/ViewImage.dll?userid=hellianthor&album_id=53107&image_id=4&courtesy=1
What I found when I opened the one the mouse came out of
Underneath all that insulation sitting in the bottom of the cabinet was a 20lb pile of uneaten sunflower seeds
Also the grill used to have the acoustical foam stuff on them but the guy had ripped it off years ago so I used the bare wood grills and put black speaker cloth on them then I oiled up the cabinets and not only do they sound real sweet I think they look pretty good too
They are big and heavy too and make nice little places to display pics and knick knacks, speakers are so heavy they don't vibrate enough for the things to fall of ;)
No walt next to the last altec pic you see the side of a big armoire thing I built for my comp there is a 20' mini stereo to RCA cord run off a Y cord from the front channel plug in for my sound card, when I want to listen to music I choose "2 speakers" (I use a 4.1 klipsch system for comp speakers) in my sound card setup and I am good to go. Currently the CV's are Biamped using a Sansui G-7700 120wpc and a AU-G77X 110 wpc, and the Altecs run off a Technics SA-500 55 wpc all three are wired together thru the record outs and aux ins and thru much trial and error I have the volumes set so that if you stand in the center of the room with it medium high you can't tell where the music is coming from, then I use my keyboard (has volume controls on it) to control the volume like a mixer turning it up or down from there. here is a pic of my comp setup:
You sit there for hours gaming?
Don't you find those pull-out keyboard things flimsy and irritating ... and no room for your legs! I am lucky, at home I have a good sized executive desk which fits my CRT, keyboard, mouse, scanner, and printer with space to spare. Box goes under the desk.
Also, the analogue out from your soundcard goes into which input on which amp?
No I built the pull out thingy ;) 3/4 plywood with a maple trim ain't flimsy, the sliders are heavy duty kitchen drawer ones rated for 150lbs I believe. I have plenty of room for my legs and the best part is when I am not infront of it, doors close protecting everything from women, pets, and children :D
From my sound card it plugs into the AUX on the G-7700, the from the record outs on the G-7700 to the AUX on the AU-G77X then from the record outs on the AU to the AUX on the SA-500. I select AUX on the AU and the SA at all times and they play whatever comes out of the G-7700, then if I am using the comp I select AUX on the G-7700 if I want to use the radio I select tuner and whatever I play thru the G-7700 plays thru all components and thru both the CV's and the Altecs.

Deep from the Lansing Heritage archives, here's the system that was likely the genesis of the MKII 1215. It dates from 1976. I don't think it was in production long. I picked up the spec sheet from a local dealer who brought in a new pair. I don't ever remember seeing them again.

Don,
Those are indeed my own personal JBL's -- a pair of 4312A's and a pair of L100's, both acquired via eBay. Though, I really should use the "past tense" on the 4312A's, because I sold those after I bought a pair of incredibly mint L150A's. Here's the whole family before I broke them up:
http://home.attbi.com/~thoots2/whitewoofers.jpg
I got the L150A's via your Lansing Heritage site -- a member posted a message in the forum offering them for sale, mentioning that the woofer and passive surrounds had been replaced by a shop I recognized as relatively local, and we worked out a deal. Turns out he had the original boxes and packaging, and the speakers were absolutely PERFECT -- truly, not even a scratch on them. Plus, they had the optional oak veneer, which fits in with all the rest of my oak furniture MUCH better than walnut does. :p:
Here are the L150A's in their oaken glory:
http://home.attbi.com/~thoots2/l150_001_768.jpg
And, here's the whole shebang I dragged home:
http://home.attbi.com/~thoots2/l150_002_768.jpg
Needless to say, I'm very happy with the L150A's! :p:
I just really didn't have enough room for all three pairs of speakers, so I wound up selling the 4312A's. I actually loved their sound, but the L100's are the sentimental classics, and the L150A's won the battle to be the main speakers, so the 4312A's were the odd man out. I bought the L150A's for $600, bought the 4312A's for $475, and sold them for $500. So, the big L150A's really didn't set me back all that much in the end! :p:
Thks for the info Don, I have seen CV's like those on ebay before and an old reg from AU BTS has a similar pair. You seem to be quite knowledgeable ever seen a pair of mine before? It's lonely having the only pair in existence it seems and no one to share their thoughts and experiences on their sound etc.
BUMP!
We've got a lot of new members so I figured I'd bump this up so they can see it ;) I'll also update it with a pic of how they sit in their current configuration:

Hey THOR, that is AWESOME!! Love those babies. Got a story of my own. I own a Sansui AU-G99X that I hope to have running again, gonna mate it with perhaps my best find yet...
Was walking my pit bull Budah, in a light mist, and stumbled damn near OVER a pair of D-5 cerwin vegas (1984). See, we were having "trash week" and everyone was unloading all sorts of things...got 4 working kirby vacuums, one of which was a G5, sells for 1000 new, 300 used. The faux wood had slightly peeled, and the woofer's surrounds were shot, but I went back, got the truck, and loaded them up. After sending them to SimplySpeakers, as I didn't trust myself to refoam, am proud to say I have them back, and for rock music, they are GREAT. I had forgotten how exciting a sound they have. Mated them first with a Technics SA-400, which has a great soundstage, and have settled, for the time being, with an Onkyo Integra TX-65 from the same year. Rich, warm, and definitely rockin' sound.
Have thought about telling the guy who threw them out to come have a listen.......;)
Awesome man, I had an AU-G77X and I still have my Technics SA-500 ;)
Nothing better than finding free stuff!

My ex brother-in-law (sister's ex-husband) had a pair

were/are about the size of HPM-100s or JBL-L100s or
little bit bigger.
He paid about a $1000 a piece for his speakers back in
about the mid seventies... don't remember the model
number though...

Yes thats right
This are cv from a forgotten past. Even if people dont want to realize it, cv was once a real hifi speaker developer but started to mass produce and the build quality did go down several %.
But they have had some god models after 1215se, like al 1000, dc 1515 and now cls 215. Does not look as nice as 1215se and sound quality is a little ruffer on the edges. But both cls 215 and dc 1515 play real load with 2x15. Cls 215 is also wery cheap here in Norway in comparison to what dc 1515 and dc 1215 series cost. It`s both because the dollar vs the norwegian krone(currensy) and that stanton group(ownwers of cv today) produce in China. They look crap but i think they play real good.

cerwin vega rl18p. high end from cerwin. Drivers:1" softdome 6,5" mid and 8" active bass in the back of the speaker box. plays very good and clean with loud bass like cerwin is known for. h.122. w.22. d.35. Own terminals for every speaker driver. 250w active amplifier in each speaker, is also shielded and therefor match perfectly for surround.

i've had them for a while now and noone seems to know anything about them.
Yes i know about them, people say it`s one of the best sounding cv`s ever. Unfortunally i dont have the specs anymore, but they are around 250-300w rms. If they are in good shape they`re actually worth a good amount of money i`ve heard :thmbsp:

Isn't this like one of the first ever AK posts? We should consider it vintage at this point...Now if we could just find a way of selling it on ebay!

Best regards,
Michael

Hey Thor,
I was doing a Google search on some speakers I have, and lo and behold, this thread pops up. Thought I would share some info with you about the speakers we have. The Cerwin Vega 1215 we have were sold only on US military bases overseas in the early 90's following the Gulf War. There were either 1000 pair or 1000 speakers manufactured (I think it was 1000 pair), the little badge on the lower front should have a number stamped on them that will tell you what number in that series you have.
Ive used a pair of Carver amps bridgeable to 1000W to power these puppies.
Do you still have that brochure of these speakers? The link for the brochure pics arent working for me.
Thanks,
Kainam
