I got some of these from Nickrobotron for free that had blown tweeters and the woofers needed to be refoamed. (Thanks NIck!!)so I was searching around ebay and found this auction that I bid on and won:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=110159920428&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=001

The guy shipped me the Polydax Tweets, the Mids, the 12" Woofers, the crossovers, and the badges. Everything for $45.00 and all components in excellent condition. I installed the new tweets and the woofers and I think they are an excellent pair of speakers.

Just curious if anybody has ever had a pair of these and what your opinions are of these speakers? I plan on getting some lighter cloth and redoing the grills and probably will keep these. They sound very good to these old ears. There isn't a lot of info on these on the net and was just wondering if anybody knows how much they sold for new and what your opinion is of these speakers. :thmbsp:

Thanks,

Rick

The pic in the auction looks like what is identified on Infinity Classics as the Model 5000 (http://www.infinity-classics.de/infinity/models/XX00-series-1975/Model-5000+A/body_5000a.html). The 5000 had the clear poly woofer that you could make out the woofer basket behind it. The Model 3000 (http://www.infinity-classics.de/infinity/models/XX00-series-1975/Model-3000/body_3000.html), while also a 3-way, had a center-mounted tweeter and a white-cone woofer. Specs are:

Model 5000

Introduced: 1975
Dimensions: 67 x 38 x 25 cm
Bass: 1 x 30 cm
Mids: 1 x 12 cm
Highs: 1 x Dome Tweeter
Suggested for amplifiers with: ??? Watts per channel
Frequency range: ???
Crossover frequencies: ???
Suggested price (pair): ???

As you can see, no price info there either.

I've attached photos from Infinity Classics below. The speaker on the left is supposedly a 5000, with a 3000 on the right.

These are the 3000P as pictured in the auction. This may be one of my best buys in quite a while. I have the mids and the crossovers to play with that have some very nice mid pots and tweet pots that I may be able to use in some AR's. Of course I will take pics of those pots and get some opinions on them.

Looking through my little Infinity database here, the 3000P is listed as being a 1981 model. Somewhere I ran across the MSRP being listed at $698, but that doesn't sound right. The previous 3000 models were $420-$470, so yours likely sold in the $450-$500 range going by the pattern. They're spec'd at 42Hz-20kHz +/-4dB and offer up a four ohm load. The ported design is a bit unusual for older Infinities as they were most always acoustic suspension, hence the addition of the "P" to the model to indicate this fact.

It was the lower cost, bookshelf models such as the 3000P that helped Infinity pay for the development of their top models, so they're worth acknowledging for that. Being Infinities, they should sound decent enough.

Don't know if this will help much, but I clearly remember back around 1982 to 1984ish that Pacific Stereo carried a speaker very similar to that 3-way version pictured above. I remember it partly because of the "normal" dome tweeter it used (vs. the EMITs and foam domes all their other models used), but especially the fact that it was a bass reflex design. And it bothered me the port was so tiny for such a large woofer.

Did Infinity make their own drivers or did they use other manufacturer's drivers as well? The woofer looks very familiar, unless that clearer looking cone was popular for a time with manufactures besides Infinity.

I saw one at t thrift shop about a month ago.
I have a Kappa 7 and preferred the looks of the kappa over the 3000p so i let it go. It was selling for 100 usd only.
