Might be a deal if they can be fixed. Anyone know how an "arcing" Quad can be fixed?

Anyone know how an "arcing" Quad can be fixed? http://sfbay.craigslist.org/pen/ele/410096379.html Not mine. mhardy6647 08-31-2007, 06:14 PM Yes the panels can be rebuilt. The ESL-63 panels are quite a bit simpler than the (seemingly) rather jury-rigged design of the ESL-57. http://www.geocities.com/drquad@pacbell.net/ http://www.quadesl.org/ http://www.quadesl.com/quad_esl63.html Charivari 08-31-2007, 06:20 PM That's a heckuva deal and an easy fix for someone who knows what they're doing and there are plenty of those in California. Why aren't you on your way to pick them up yet? The ESL-63, if I'm remembering correctly, is an interesting design that uses delay lines with concentric areas of the diaphragm to create a panel that emulates the dispersion of a point source. Should sound very, very good when going again or have one very good center channel. - JP mhardy6647 08-31-2007, 06:32 PM yup, that be them... something like a mile of wire in 'em... onepixel 08-31-2007, 06:34 PM Thanks guys. mhardy6647, Thanks for the links. I found this. "Oh, and if you're not to familiar or comfortable with handling the high internal voltages involved, don't do it at all. Some errors are merely shocking, others may be fatal." That is probably why I won't be getting them. :D Charivari 08-31-2007, 06:39 PM Oh no, you'd not want to try your hand at them. Speaking from experience, the Quads require special tools to trouble shoot and you'll definitely know it if you shake hands with one of the voltage lines. Sure wakes you up, though. However, you're in San Francisco, California. You're in the center of one of the best places to find good repairfolk who know what they're doing and could rebuild the Quads to better than new for a price. If you like good, refined sound and can sacrifice volume for eerily lifelike recreation of midrange, they'd be well-worth it. These are legendary speakers for a reason and $400 is a steal even in their current condition. - JP onepixel 08-31-2007, 07:05 PM Charivari,, Thanks for the encouragement. But I have enough working speakers and enough speaker projects. Maybe another AKer will enoy them. Thanks, Carl |
