View Full Version : Metallica, St.Anger
Wireworm5 12-16-2003, 06:38 AM It Rocks!! This has got to be the best recorded rock music I've ever heard. Satriani 'Live in San Francisco' being second. Done in their own studio with everything properly mic'ed. On playback the drums sound like they're right in your room, you can hear all the subtle nuances on a good stereo system (most other recordings fail with drums).
If you like Metallica this is a must own.Get it! (dvd is slightly better in sound quality over the cd).
Did I mention it Rocks!!  :guitar: :guitar: :guitar: :guitar:
javap111 12-16-2003, 09:43 AM It took a little time to get used to the open snare sound, but I agree with you. I really like this album.
Tillerman 12-16-2003, 05:50 PM Whoa!
I have been a Metallifan since the beginning.
Simply put, I do NOT share your opinion on St. Anger in regards to music quality or recording quality. If you like it, that is fine with me. Of all my Metallica CDs, this one rarely gets played.
Scott
I agree tiller sounds like it was recorded in a garage.
Wireworm5 12-17-2003, 03:04 PM How can you say that, recorded in a garage! I had to listen to it again to be sure I'm not mistaken. Mind you my spl meter was registering between 95 and 100 dbs. Maybe at a lower volume it sounds muted. The explicit lyrics might be offensive, but I don't really pay attention to the lyrics. I'd be happier without them.
Anyways I stand by what I said. This album is well recorded, and it Rocks!!:guitar: :guitar: :guitar: :guitar:
grumpy 12-17-2003, 03:21 PM Personally i think its their worse Musically and sonic ally. I was never a big fan of theirs but i respected their early stuff. Specially anything with Dave still in the band. Hell i seen them playing in bars and they rocked ! but the crap they turn out now a days is Blahhhh.
Grumpy
I never play anything at lower volume :dunno:
When I say recorded in a garage it just doesn't sound polished, sounds like a garage band, has a live sound to it and I don't prefer most live music to studio. It sounds like they tried really hard to sound like their early stuff. I am one of the few who liked the progression they were showing in their music. Going from garage sounding speed metal, to polished hard rock n roll like in the Black alblum, even using orchestras. I liked that their music was becoming ....well more musical, but the hardcore fans have always dogged them about so I guess they made this alblum to try and silence them.
bullseye 12-31-2003, 12:05 AM you cant gripe abuot mettalica changing their sound or the way they compose their music they have been trend setters science the early 80s and after a wile it gets monatanous plaing the same Sht its not the "hey the're not plaing 1000 mph they must be selling out" when they produced load or this "it dont sound like mettalica" for st anger you have to change your sound if you keep plaing the same thing for 20 fears it would get monatanous and this great band would have faded out a long time ago :puke: :finger:
I agree, as you get older and gain more life experience, have kids get married, have friends and family die, and you don't drink a 5th of Jack daniels every night your music is bound to change and mature and I feel that is what was happening from the Black alblum on.
My beef with St. Anger is that it sounds like they tried to answer all the Metallica sold out critics and bring back the harder speed metal sound. Just sounds like a step backwards to me.
Johnny 12-31-2003, 07:57 PM Thor, while I'd agree with just about everything in your previous post, I cant agree that St. Anger is a step back. If anything it really is a giant step forward. Not only for them, but for "metal" as a whole. I think St. Anger is not an album to be taken at face value ; Theres alot in there and its hard to catch and probably wont be appreciated for years to come. Thats ok with me.
I love this album, and its glaring flaws.
J
Wireworm5 01-01-2004, 06:29 AM St. Anger is pretty heavy stuff, but it would have been alot better had there been a couple of blistering guitar solos.
That's what I liked about Deep Purple. They would let Ritchie cut loose on the guitar and he occasionally ripped a masterful solo. I am still searching for someone to fill Ritchie's shoes in the rock world. Satriani comes close, but he somehow fails to convey feeling in his style.
Even Metallica's guitarist has aspirations of Ritchie. If they'd let him cut loose once in awhile and I'd be a dedicated fan.
Then there's the organ. Any great rock band has to have an organ. Without one they'd never be #1 in my books.:lmao:
You must be a big Doors fan ;)
bullseye 01-03-2004, 11:33 PM ritchie was a bad ass guitar player but dont cut out players like randy rohads jake e lee and zakk wylde theres more than blackmore steve vai or satch but michieal shreckner has them all beat
Wireworm5 01-04-2004, 04:12 AM As a matter of fact I do like the Doors. But only have their greatest hits album. I would probably be much more apprectiative had they not been so overplayed on the radio before I heard them on a good stereo.
Never heard of the these guitarist other than Ritchie,Satch and Vai. I doubt very much they can top Ritchie. Will give them a listen if I can find them and get back to ya.
Jimmy Page's performance in Dazed & Confused on 'Song Remains the Same' is also a masterpiece of rock guitar. Mark Farner of Grand Funk is damn good too.:)
