Mrs. JD and I saw Pat Green, Sugarland, and Kenny Chesney in concert last night. It was an outdoor show at the local amphitheater.
I'll be honest. While I wanted to see the show, I was bummed out at the ticket prices ($69 each, + $25 each in ticketmaster fees = $94 per ticket). But I must say, the show was worth it. The concert lasted 4 hours and 5 minutes.
Pat Green was the one I most wanted to see, but turned out to be the most disappointing of the show. He started at 7 p.m., and the place was only about half full at that point. He only played 6 songs, and spent 4 of those trying to get people out of their seats and dancing around. At one point, he jumps down in the crowd and starts finding people sitting down and makes them stand up. It was kinda weird actually.
His set included 4 off of his latest album, Cannonball: Cannonball, Way Back Texas, Dixie Lullaby, & Feels Just Like It Should. He then played a strange selection - an old U2 song (can't even remember which one now). The highlight was when he finished up with Wave on Wave. About halfway thru the song, he introduced his little boy, about 4 years old. Pat put him on his shoulders and finished the song.
Sugarland was next, and they were very polished. Jennifer Nettles looked great, and she really new how to work the crowd and camera. Her twangy voice just adds to the package. Her sidekick, Kristian Bush, really looked like he was having a great time on stage. This group was much better than I expected. The only song that was a misfit was when she did a Beyonce song, Irreplaceable. Stick with the twang Jennifer.
Finally Kenny Chesney came out a little after 9 p.m., and played until almost 11:15 p.m. He is Mrs. JD's favorite artist, and she counted 22 songs the guy performed. K.C. has a connection with fans unmatched by any concert I've ever been a part of. His tunes spanned his entire career, including 3 songs from his album that releases next Tuesday - Poets and Pirates. He did a couple of honkey tonk songs, one Alabama song, and the opening song was a strange medley of AC/DC's Back in Black, Black Betty, and his own Beer in Mexico. He did a solo acoustic set that included Blue Rockin' Chair (my favorite K.C. song).
It was just a rowdy, dancin', beer bash with 7,000 of my closest friends. I had a friend from work who was working at one of the beer tents, and he kept me in free, cold Icehouse all evening. Our seats were right of center stage, about 40 rows back.
In spite of the price, I'd do it again. Mrs. JD enjoyed it more than any show we've attended together.
Getting up and going to work this morning wasn't a lot of fun, even after sleeping in a couple of extra hours.
