View Full Version : HD 7.1 decoding--WHERE?

Even though there are several new receivers on the market that claim to have 7.1 DD True HD and DTS HD Master decoding capabilities (IF I correctly read their specs), I have not seen anything from the specs on Blu-ray or HD-DVD players in which the decoding of future 7.1 HD sound will be done anywhere but inside the players themselves or allowed by external processors.
Can anyone clear this up -- WILL HD 7.1 decoding be allowed outside the high definition DVD players?

It is all done outside the player inside your receiver or PrePro. . . If it were done by the player then you would need 8 wires going to the preamp or receiver. . . The way I understand it is that a digital stream goes from the player to the PrePro or receiver where it is decoded and changed into an analog stream for delivery to your amp/amps.
You are right about not much program material and not many if any receivers with the capability for HD Audio. . .

Sure will. You'll need an HDMI connection between the two devices though. I know this feature is supported on HDMI 1.3
Otherwsie you're decoding in the player and coming into your prepro via 8 analog cables
