View Full Version : How much would you pay for your music fix?
madpioneer 09-10-2007, 01:07 PM Just curious how far one is willing to go for that one outta reach piece of music.May be out of print. Rare on certain format. Limited release.
Whats the most you have ever paid for LP, CD, Tape whatever?
Doesn't matter what music genre, be it Rock, Classical, Blues, Jazz, Country whatever. Lets hear it!
What would you be willing to pay for something you have not yet found?
My limit on rare out of print Rock/Metal CD's has gone from $30 around four years ago to a whopping $70 today.:scratch2:
ponderbear 09-10-2007, 01:20 PM I would pay $50-70 for a sealed, unabused copy of XTC's English Settlement, Virgin UK imprint, original embossed cover. Same price for Black Sea with the original green bag intact. I've been collecting records since the age of three. When I was in grade school, it was Beatles LPS and 45s I wanted. I bought every XTC import I could find when I was in high school and kept them all in perfect shape. I winnowed my prize LPs down to a single crate when my marriage went belly up about six years ago- naturally the XTC and Beatles collections were in it. The one revenge my soon to be ex exacted upon me- I have to admit, it was brilliant in its conception, because it cut me about as deep as anything could- was to toss that crate out onto the curb and the let the college kids have at it while I was on a business trip. So I would pay a pretty hefty amount for those XTC disks (I was lucky enough to get a mint copy of Drums and Wires on the original Virgin UK label earlier this year, yay!).
onepixel 09-10-2007, 01:20 PM I stopped buying expensive music. The last one I got, couple of years ago I paid $50 for Miles Davis/Kind of Blue on vinyl. I can usually find whatever for a lot less these days.
I once bought kind of a "rare" CD from Nacho Sotomayor" a Spanish musician. It shipped from Germany. Once I got it, I found a $2.99 clearance sticker on it from Amoeba Music, which is a local SF store.
What kinda rare stuff are you looking for? We have some great resources in the SF Bay area, might be able to help.
btw...Pat Boone scares me.
hellhound94 09-10-2007, 01:34 PM I've paid around $50 for a Beatles album...don't even remember which one. I don't think I'd pay any more than that. I wouldn't go that far for a used CD...maybe would go $40.
240sx4u 09-10-2007, 02:02 PM I searched high and low for Deftones, White Pony on LP. They were going for 100+ for months and months. Finally got one for $50..
Hands down the most $$ purchase of music for me. I am sure there will be more in the future.
Totally worth it IMO.

Charivari 09-10-2007, 02:17 PM I was looking for Jeszcze Raz - Balagane a while back and couldn't find a copy for less than $80. After just about talking myself up to spending $50 if I could find a copy, a reprieve arrived in a new CD for $20.
So, if it's music I really want, $50 is just barely possible. However, I'd really look hard elsewhere before spending that much as it's more than most of my equipment cost.

I usually find what I am looking for. Most from that popular auction site.
I regret not grabbing some of the Cd's when they were new for around $17. Now out of print can easily run $50 to $80.
I always said I would not pay more than $30 for a rare Cd no matter what. Every year I up the anty. So I started this to see if there are others like me or I am just the only crazy one out here!:scratch2:
BTW the Pat Boone LP cover avatar is the one that killed his career. Did a whole LP of Rock & Metal tunes and they threw him off TBN. I saw him on David Letterman promoting the album. He was dressed in black leather pants, leather biker boots and a black leather vest with no shirt and all tanned up. People started to laugh in the audience when he walked out. He had this menancing look on his face. I thought it was priceless and funny as all get out. So my new avatar a tribute to him doing Metal LOL
Starrider1 09-10-2007, 04:11 PM Onepixel is right. Between Rasputens and Amoeba Music, you can pretty much find most music at really reasonable prices. Although I like the Berkley stores, easier to get in and out. Also our local thrift stores and craigs list always seems to have stuff. I used to pay more when I first started my vinyl collection, but now I have so many albums that I have to use a DB to keep track of what I have. Through my record collecting I met a couple of guys that live close to me that collect, sell and trade. One has 80,000 records and the other has 10,000. Between the two I usually can find what I'm looking for.

Perhaps he lived next door to Ozzy for too long!
I paid $45 for an out of print Webb Wilder CD called Doo Dad. It was to replace the copy I had loaned to my brother who had lost it. I have learned a great lesson. :nono:
JJJimmy 09-10-2007, 07:00 PM I paid $20 each for some MFSL (one owner, near mint, bagged) LP's a few years ago, including Pink Floyd, Poco, Al Stewart, Pablo Cruise, LRB (16 in all)...actually got a huge case of buyers remorse until I began to listen to 'em. Now, after very carefully making CD copies, I'm glad I have them since I don't see too many out there any more. But when I do, and they're $50 plus, I just can't do it.
Mystic 09-10-2007, 07:03 PM $200 in 1988 for a mint copy of a Blind Willie Johnson 78 [Columbia 14425]:
A - Keep Your Lamp Trimmed & Burning
B - Lord I Just Can't Keep From Crying
I'd do it again, and if I found 10 clean (forget mint) copies at that price today, I'd buy 'em all.
theWB 09-10-2007, 08:58 PM Paid $70 for a DCC Gold copy of Jethro Tull's Aqualung
This is the only copy of this CD I've ever heard that doesn't have
that horrible tape hiss through the whole CD.
Would do it again in a heartbeat.
WhiteSE 09-10-2007, 09:20 PM I dont even remember...maybe I paid about 40 for a plum label Yes's Fragile....and the live double boot...In The Round...
Des_Lab 09-10-2007, 09:30 PM I'll answer the question and then I'll ask one.
First, I understand that there is a longer re-mix version of "New Gold Dream" by SImple Minds out there. Here is a sample of the song as played on my trusty X-2000R:

If someone were to offer up a CD copy of the alternate mix, I'd be willing to pay up to $30 for it. After all, this IS one of my very favorite 80's songs.
Now what would YOU pay for a copy of this recording? It is of Chicago playing live at the Greek Theater in LA. Broadcast via 95.5 KLOS 8/11/78. All but the last 6 minutes of the performance are on the tape. Years ago, I inadvertantly erased those last 6 minutes (which are on the "flip" side of the tape) when, in a pinch, I thought I was using the "blank" side of the tape on a half-track Otari MX-5050.

My CD doesn't have the Snap, Crackle, and Pop.:D
6thumbs 09-10-2007, 10:51 PM Paid 20.00 for a still in plastic Ruby Starr ,Smokey Places ,, probabally wind up in a landfill when I check-put

That just ain't right!:twak::gigglemad:pistols::uzi::tears:
madpioneer 09-10-2007, 11:13 PM Just paid $58+ shipping for a rare 'Bachman Turner Overdrive Street Action' CD!:music:
Few others I am after. Gonna run $50 or more..:sigh:

:lmao:
Touche'! :D
meggy 09-10-2007, 11:44 PM I'd probably go as high as $250 for a "rare" sealed LP.
Art K. 09-11-2007, 08:03 AM No more than $30 and most often less than $7.
RawDeal 09-11-2007, 08:54 AM I have limited myself to $15-$20 tops. I just got in a NM copy of Louis Armstrong "Satch plays King Oliver" for $9 from the auction site. Very good investment. A new copy of the record runs $30. I listen to a lot a 50-60's jazz and have found I can order many of the reissues I want new from 8.99-11.75. It takes a little of the fun out though.
Drybasement 09-11-2007, 08:58 AM I've spent a few bucks on some of the DCC gold ceedees. I paid around $60 for Tull's Aqualung and over $100 for it's vinyl equivalent.
