Is ranting allowed on this forum? Here goes.

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, I happened to catch part of the MTV VMA’s last night and realized that it just did. For a few years now I’ve been of the opinion that American music was going down the crapper at an alarming rate; but not really this fast. Last night all my fears were confirmed over and over again. Maybe I’m just getting old, but I haven’t lost my hearing yet.

Historically, new edgy music has always been a threat to the older generation. But Elvis and the Beatles didn’t suck. I mean, I wonder if my parents thought that Elvis and the Beatles were bad musicians? Don’t think so!

Does anyone know if there’s a central phone number I can call and speak to the guy in charge of this insanity?

Please, MAKE IT STOP!

I agree. Popular "Top 40" has been abysmal for years. In my opinion, popular music started it's decline after about 1987. By 1991, it had pretty much hit rock bottom. Since then, it has continued to dig. It's no coincidence that 1991 is also the release year of the last two albums that I consider good rock: "Into The Great Wide Open" by Tom Petty and "Achtung Baby" by U2.

A handful of good singles have come out since. But they are far and few in between. And as a rule, I won't even bother listening to any "Todays hits" station anymore.

You aren't alone.

Slap me upside the head man. I forgot about that!

But seriously, I was mesmirized by how bad it was. Like looking at an accident scene.

Have to admit watching Brit stink up the place was entertaining. I think I actually giggled at one point.

Is it a coincidence that music started sucking about the time MTV got cranked up?

It's about the same time that poor quality BPC lo-fi equipment was all the rage (and still is!).

I just read after her stellar fugup on the show, she decided to go out partying with her brother.. and in the process was showing off the kitty again... :puke:

I think she should just hang it up now, and drift off into the porn world.. hhhmm.. but even there, people have to wanna watch for you to be worth the film you're on...

there is tons and tons of new, edgy music being released all the time--and re-releases of old 'new edgy music' are ongoing too. i posted about the Young Marble Giants re-release a couple weeks ago and not one person replied. i posted about the dub-step artist Burial earlier this year, and i think one or two people replied.

but ya gotta read The Wire, Uncut, Paste, Skyscraper and etc to keep up with and understand what's going on out there. you can't rely on the your local FM 106.1 and MTV, fer chrissakes, to point you in the right direction. these rants where people get all broken hearted about the state of 'today's music' reveal nothing but a kind of passivity.

it's out there, seek and ye shall find

Kinda makes it a little ironic the very first song played on MTV was video killed the radio star... they saw the future... :ntwrthy:

Maybe she could team up with Lindsey Lohan for some G on G action...

Both of them are talentless drunks.... At least Lohan usually remembers to cover up the cooch before she heads out for a night of puking on sidewalks in front of Hollywood's trendiest nightspots....:puke2:

I was gonne post a "Before & After" photo comparison of Britany, but I just couldn't do it, it was to disturbing to see what she has done to herself...:thumbsdn:

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any worse, I happened to catch part of the MTV VMA’s last night and realized that it just did. I agree but you could have made it more tolerable be simply turning the volume all the way down and just watching the spectacle.:lmao: If you can keep yourself getting too disgusted it will have you laughing just before you turn it off.:yuck: If you allow yourself to think about what you are seeing and hearing it is all quite sad.:sigh:

I remember when Brittney was a cute little girl who had at least a pleasant, if not great, singing voice. But then I remember when Michael Jackson was a cute little black kid, not a scary old white woman....And there IS a place in my rheumy old cold heart that feels sorry for both of 'em...Just a little.

I would agree with that 100%.

The "talents" that make the most money are on MTV and the radio not the folks that really have talent. There has been plenty of good music made since 1991. You just don't see it on MTV. Folks who go to dance clubs and hippidty-hop around 3 nights a week generally don't take the time to listen to anything other than the radio and certainly don't visit forums like AK. Case in point my wife (a former speaker queen in her younger days) loves pop music. She watched the VMA and enjoyed it. She likes Justin Timberlake, Avril L.,etc.. My 10 y.o. daughter likes Hillary Duff, Miley Cirus etc.. (ahhh..where is that vomiting smilie face!!) I must admit if your goal is dancing then it works. Fortunately, she likes jazz, latin, RnR and even bluegrass too. Probably means she's a little just more open minded than I am or not as opinionated. --Yet there is still hope my 4 y.o. son's favorite is Rock Lobster.
