View Full Version : What do your kids listen to... TeeDeeJr 09-11-2007, 10:10 PM ...and can you stand it?:guitar: Tyson AlleyKat 09-11-2007, 10:29 PM My oldest (22 in a few days) is a devoted Elvis fan. My youngest (18) loves Amy Winehouse, Regina Spektor, and KT Tunstall. Can't say that either of their tastes is to my liking, but I have got the youngest listening to a few more palatable (to me) groups. When she left for college, she asked for my complete mp3 collection- know she's partial to the Cowboy Junkies and Cake. Maybe there's hope for them yet.... VinylHanger 09-12-2007, 12:47 AM My daughter is starting to get her own ideas about music. Pretty much anything on Disney channel is on her radar these days, especially Hannah Montana. Avril Lavine and a few others as well. Heart, Creed and some of my favorites get play on her mp3 player as well. She's 8, I think she is doing fine. Scorpion8 09-12-2007, 12:49 AM My teen is in a "I think I'm a redneck" phase, so it's country music. Old Johnny Cash, and some new stuff. His phases come and go like irritable bowel syndrome so next week it'll be ...... Wigwam Jones 09-12-2007, 01:05 AM No kids. I dislike people, but I don't hate the world so much I'd want to inflict more of my genetic material on it. ozmoid 09-12-2007, 02:06 AM My daughter is 5, and listens to the Beatles, Motown, and Veggietales. I'm sure that will change. :smoke: Just hopefully not ALL of it. :music: cfranz 09-12-2007, 09:21 AM This is a 'no kidding' list of their favorites top to bottom. Have to agree with the top two (Monkeys only if Micky is singing) and the last... The Kingston Trio Monkeys Michael W. Smith Weird Al Beatles Pink Floyd Oldest is 19, youngest is 14. Both boys. cabinover 09-12-2007, 12:04 PM My kids listen to a little bit of everything. Not much I cannot stand in their music either, most of it's mine anyway. There is only so much of Metallica's S&M or AC/DC that I can take though. Not bad for 9 & 13. They both know the words to Let's Call the Whole Thing Off-Louis and Ella. :D cabinover 09-12-2007, 12:05 PM Also, they've introduced some new stuff to me. The latest are Creed and Hinder. About the best rock out there lately and it's really hard to say that. DelanoJoe 09-12-2007, 12:18 PM My 15 year old loves Stevie Ray Vaughn and AC/DC, which is fine by me. My daughter doesn't listen to much, and my 10 year old is into the Eagles and classic rock because of Guitar Hero. Compared to what's out there, I couldn't be happier... Joe Sandy G 09-12-2007, 12:29 PM Bethany is going thru a phase where All She'll Listen To is Christian rock...Why have NONE of those people ever heard of subtlety in their message ? I can't listen to WQUT, WIMZ, any of 'em... Oh, well, at least it's better-only slightly, mind you, but STILL better than that horrid rapcrap she used to be hooked on... ponderbear 09-12-2007, 12:54 PM 10 year old son- loves the Beatles, the Monkees... and Spongebob Squarepants. He also likes Shonen Knife, the Ramones and the Trashmen. A chip off the old block! My 6 year old son and 10 year old both love this over the top techno thing called crazy frog- knock offs of things like Popcorn (remember that song from the 70s?) and I like to Move it from the Madagascar animated movie. They also go for storyteller quasi-music, for instance some album called "Rattlesnakes for Breakfast" that is okay, but so pantomimed for kid consumption I can't stand to listen to it. My 6 year old also loves anything that rocks. He likes Sabbath and Rush. He already has an Elvis imitation. I have about an hour's worth of recordings of him rambling on about crazy 6-year-old things and strumming a totally detuned guitar. pretty cool. My 3-yr old girl is a girly girl and only likes music sung by girls. It can be Queen Latifah or Sheryl Crow or Amy Winehouse or Carrie Underwood, as long as she can tell it's a girl singing. I mean the background singers too. She and I spin the dial on a portable sometimes and she picks out the gender of the singer. she does not like any trace of male voices. She's a picky eater too, I suppose you might have guessed. Strangeband 09-12-2007, 01:06 PM My 15-year-old son likes quite a range of music, including classic rock staples such as Pink Floyd, the Who, and Led Zep, but he has branched out to find his own vibe and lis now more likely to They Might Be Giants or Porcupine Tree than the older stuff. My 12-year-old daughter likes Green Day, Foo Fighter, and Smashing Pumpkins, but she also likes harder edged punk and alternative rock. I'm not much on most of the classic rock but can listen to most anything else with the kids. chuckworkb 09-12-2007, 07:46 PM All I can say to my kids choice of music is "turn that so called music down" That's not music, this is music, and I put on everything from Led Zepplin, to Ella, and they tell me to turn it down, and i reply - Nope! What's the matter you don't like this, this is music, pure talent. Not just F words and three power cords. Someday they will do the same to their kids! Yamaha B-2 09-12-2007, 08:22 PM My daughter is into big band music and her husband prefers jazz and and anything with a decent guitar. gearhead 09-12-2007, 09:48 PM Hi, I'm Gearhead's daughter...He wanted me to type this because I type waaaay faster than him. I'm 16 and I listen to just about everything... Classic rock, rock, country, rap, pop, hip-hop, and just about anything. We agree on Boston, Velvet Revolver, Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Supersuckers, Ozzy (the new song), Nickelback, Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, and plenty of others. But we both agree that we hate "Hey There Delilah" by the Plain White Ts...Soo whiny and annoying! JimJ[VT] 09-13-2007, 05:56 PM My kids like...oh wait. If I have kids somebody out there hasn't told me...yet. JimJ[VT] 09-13-2007, 05:57 PM But we both agree that we hate "Hey There Delilah" by the Plain White Ts...Soo whiny and annoying! So I take it you're not a Dylan fan? :p: Andyman 09-13-2007, 06:19 PM Well, my 15 year old is HEAVILY into her HS band and listens to all sorts of stuff. She sits next to me downstairs and I just heard "Sing, sing, sing" by Benny Goodman, and quite often, I hear 60s's and 70's music. She had me take her to see Bob Dylan too and plays "Hurricane" to death. She also listens to other stuff age appropriate that I don't recognize, but I don't mind it either. Now her 13 year old sister is the All American Girl firmly entrenched in "American Idol" commercial music dreck. Teen queens, Rap, Country, her's is the stuff with the EF bombs we have to watch (well, "Hurricane" ain't really "G" rated either . Needless to say though, there's ALWAYS a soundtrack on over here, usually several. amnesiac 09-21-2007, 11:34 AM But we both agree that we hate "Hey There Delilah" by the Plain White Ts...Soo whiny and annoying! Would you be saying this is you were Delilah? Because i'm a guy, and i'm pretty sure if someone wrote a song for me that ended up on the radio, i'd be pretty :tears: :D maybe that's my "sensitive singer/songwriter" side coming out? k so it's overplayed, but that first time, it's sooo cute :omg sigh: In all seriousness, it's not bad, just very overplayed, and not great. i'm 19, i could be your kid, i listen to everything. This week went from Phantom of the Opera to The Smiths to Radiohead, Stars, Queen, Kanye West, Damien Rice, Imogen Heap, Jeff Buckley, and some Cirque Du Soleil... all over the place. And my parents love my music (for the most part) so I guess I'm lucky? or maybe they are? Duffinator 09-21-2007, 11:45 AM My five and a half year old twins like music and are taking piano lessons. They haven't developed their own collection of music yet but my daughter's favorite song is Wake Me Up When September Ends by Green Day and my son's favorite song is Mr. Jones and Me by the Counting Crows. He also likes most Dire Straits music. My daughter frequently tells me to turn down my music. My parents never complained about the music I like and I won't complain about the music my kids enjoy. But I reserve the right to tell them to turn it down! :D Johncan 09-21-2007, 11:45 AM My 9 year old daughter likes They Might Be Giants. She likes the energy and the fun of New Wave music. However, I caught her humming along to Thelonious Monk the other day :) My 7 year old daughter likes the Monkees, the Beatles, and Ennio Morricone soundtracks... she asked me to play the music from "The Man with No Name" movies the other day. She likes the whistling from The Good, the Bad, and The Ugly. John |
