Don't get me wrong, I like a wide variety of music. Thanks mom!

I have a fair idea what good engineering and mastering sounds like. Today I picked up a prime example of what it isn't and why so many people have no pity for the failing music labels. Greed aside, isn't there any pride in producing a decent product?

It’s called Tony Bennett's All-time Greatest Hits. I should have known better than buying a compilation. Who at CBS/Columbia/Sony hates Mr. Bennett so much that they would put out a cassette with such distortion and sibilance that as it traveled through my brain it took a chunk of gray matter with it, and left me stupefied. I tried to listen beyond the first 3 songs, but found it impossible. This isn't music it's torture.

Back it goes--- to be honest, this is the first time in quite a while that I wanted to hurt someone. I know the cassette, as media, is supposedly dead. Why is it, do you suppose, that CBS wanted kill me along with the cassette? :nono:

I know Mr. Bennett isn't the finest of crooners, but he infuses his stuff with heart. This recording rips it right back out-- buyer beware!

Looks like they've tried to apply their recent way of thinking with CD's to tape. Keep turning up the level until it clips. Make it louder so the people with iPods, and in their cars will notice. Unfortunately, that won't work with tapes without oversaturation. I guess you can score one for vinyl in this area. They can't do that. Vinyl keeps 'em honest!
