I was listening to "Hotel California" today, and thought about how awesome the guitar solo is, so that got me thinking about my favorite rock guitar solos. :guitar:

"Hotel California" is one, I also love the solo in "Reeling in the Years".
I know of one more that really blows me away, I think its "Comfortably Numb", Gilmour Rocks.

Give me some more, something I may not have ever heard, Something that will have me running to find it. :D

So do I get to be the first one to say Eddie Van Halen's "Eruption" solo off of the debut LP back in 1978? THAT solo is what got me the most interested in guitar when I was 12. I had already been playing since I was 7 but THAT solo really said, "learn to play better...chicks dig it". :D :thmbsp:

There are so many great solos out there. So hard to choose.

To End the Rapture by Avenged Sevenfold blows anything else I've heard out of the water. It goes into unbelievable finger tapping (hammer ons minus the initial pick) for about 12 seconds.
That or Second Heartbeat, also by Avenged Sevenfold. The thing about that band is that because their vocalist sucks and their lyrics suck they make up for it with the most unbelievable guitar ever. And not just in the solos.
I've seen several guitar tabs for Second Heartbeat that summarize the last untabbable 20 seconds of the song with
------------------------------------
-Then he goes---------<20>-----
-absolutely------------------------
-crazy-----------------------------
-for a while-----------------------

Little known blues guitarist Chris Cain, pretty much anything from "Live at the Rep". He's just amazing. And fun to watch. When he solos he throws his head back, mouth hanging open, and just lets the music come out.

Here's one where he's gettin' wid it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8e97M1L5sc

And one where you can see the head thrown back thing, but not nearly the solo:

For the most emotional solo I've ever heard, try Robben Ford's work on "Good Thing".

Anything by Kurt Cobain. Yes, he was technically simplistic. I've never heard anyone impart the iconclasm of punk in the form of a guitar solo so perfectly before or since. They were short and to the point and frequently at odds with the rest of the song. As someone who loves a good anti-hero, Kurt's anti-solos always hit the spot for me.

But if you want to consider real axe-wielding chops... Richard Lloyd's solo on "Marquee Moon" is hard to beat.

Another vote for Eddie Van Halen's Eruption!

OK, who knows what he quotes in this solo? It's worth 10 points.

I think Duane Allman's solo on "One Way Out" from Fillmore was one of his high points.

I don't know if this counts, but listen to the solo in "How Can a Man Stand Such Times and Live" on Ry Cooder's Live "Show Time" album.

I've been listening to Derek Trucks and The North Mississippi All Stars recently. Some tasty work there.

I'll second the "So Lonely" solo that Bordeno mentioned. Pure Tele.
Plus, whoever played on "My Old School". Skunk?
But what really brought me to the table is the interplay of Keith Richards and Mick Taylor on the Stones' "Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out" live LP, in particular "Sympathy for the Devil", "Street Fighting Man", "Love In Vain" and "Stray Cat Blues". That's what I'm f%$#in' talking about right there.
Kudos also to Marc Ford of the Black Crowes for "Sometimes Salvation".

I have worked through more than one exercise written by Kreutzer. His exercises are so melodic they hardly seem like work. I wish my chops were where they were when I had more time to devote to Kreutzer exercises.

While looking around for the answer I found an article that may be of interest here, but it's a pdf. Here's the citation (my form is a little rusty but you get the idea):

Walser, Robert. "Eruptions: heavy metal appropriations of classical virtuosity." Popular Music, Volume 11/3, Cambridge University Press, 1992.

Is there a place this can live on AK? It's about a meg and a half.

SRV's first appearance on Austin City Limits in '83. If you have the cajones to take on Hendrix's Voodoo Chile, you'd better do something with it. And he did.

This one's technically not rock, but I've always admired the Nile Rodgers solo on Madonna's "Dress You Up" for sheer efficiency. Dances into the break, pushes the song elsewhere without overwhelming it, and jumps back out in a hurry. It's the sonic equivalent of Monet trying to paint in an unlit crawlspace.

Damn, I forgot my other guitar anti-hero, D. Boon, late great guitarist for the punk-art-jazz group the Minutemen. he usually played on a telecaster with no special effects except perhaps some gain boost (or just cranking the amp). Taut little solos, melodically inventive. Nothing like the guitar gods discussed here, but what for what his band was playing his work was perfect. Check this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2-CgCyh5YM) out if you can stand it- no SRV, more like DIY- just a quick little solo thrown in because the lyric at that point was about... guitar solos. Brilliant.

Damn straight. That is the real deal. I love that album and the Fingers-era Stones in general.

A few other things that came to mind: Clapton's solo on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" perhaps that is too iconic to mention? I mean who didn't THAT influence?

Also- just about every damn song Frank Zappa did. "Watermelon in Easter Hay" is a good place to start. "Transylvania Boogie"'s got the dirtiest riffs ever. The clean solo on "Peaches en Regalia" is pure gold.

And what about that shit in the middle of "Willie the Pimp??" Dude was a genius.

This thread is really sparking some memories. How about Townshend's playing on "Underture" at Woodstock? Does that count as a solo? People say Hendrix's Star Spangled banner was the most riveting moment at Woodstock, and maybe that's so, but "Underture" would have had to be #2.

#3 would have to be Santana's "Soul Sacrifice."

Keith playing just behind the beat and bending the bejesus out of those two or three notes on the "Only Rock & Roll" solo. If that's not enough to get you to tap your foot or whip out the air guitar, it's because, to quote Monty Python, your metabolic processes are a matter of interest only to historians.

Wow - amazing selections here!

I'll add an obscure, yet deserving candidate: Frank Marino for Ditch Queen off the album "Juggernaut". Amazing!

I always thought that Comfortably Numb was just about the best rock guitar solo ever. Hendrix's All Along the Watchtower deserves recognition too. Then again, Alex Lifeson's solo during Limelight is right up there at the top...

I disagree. While SRV's version is raw, uncut, and full of emotion, I love the Hendrix version. The multi-layered sounds, the his delicate guitar parts through a Leslie, the slight use of phasing. Oh man! That's 2:24min of pure sonic bliss that will have you on another planet. Sadly, I wish this song was 6:00min long. I would venture to say........its the most beautiful 2:24 in all of rock/pop music!

On the subject of David Gilmour:

His strength,is the 'emotion' evoked via his solos, the achievement being how few notes he plays to attain that result.
There are a lot of guitarists who try to impress with a flurry of notes. As if quantity equaled quality.
Gilmour says more with the bare minimum, than most guitarists do with ten times the number of notes.

I was always impressed by the lead Alvin Lee from Ten Years After played on "I'm Going Home'. both the Woodstock, and studio version. Also Alvin Lee's Version of "Woodchopper's Ball", off the Ten Years After-Undead album.

It may be campy, but Berton Averre's solo on The Knack's "My Sharona" is pretty darn good and certainly burned into our brains.
I also have a soft spot for Martin Barre's solo on Jethro Tull's "Aqualung"

Don't know if it's already mentioned, but Eddie van Halen's Eruption is what got me into playing guitar. Not that I'm any good. But that's not to blame on mr. Van Halen!

I will have to start with Andy Powell and Ted Turner. They have many but my favorites, and favorite side of an LP, is Live Dates- The King Will Come, Warrior, and Throw Down the Sword. Each note is full of emotion and thought out, not just speed playing. Others- Rory , Irish Tour '74, A Million Miles Away. Jimi, Voodoo Child (Slight Return), Trower- Bridge, In This Place, etc. That whole album has stood the test of time. Cream- Spoonful and the list goes on and on

Steve Howe's Your Is No Disgrace and especially Perpetual Change on Yessons and Starship Trooper during the ABWH tour are the most complete pieces of solo guitar playing...they are melodic, rythmic, sometimes chaotic, keeping the skeleton melody and backbeat of the songs that they are a part of...Display of many influences...just beautiful work and powerful at the same time...
Definitely in a league of his own...

Frank Zappa did. "Watermelon in Easter Hay"...

FZ @ Watermelon in Easter Hay is one of my favorites, too.

Another good one: Eddie Hazel on the song Maggot Brain for Funkadelic.

I have to agree
The two acoustic guitars (well yes its not solo) on Sleep Dirt is so damn good. Always makes me sad when it ends, it's just 3 minutes and 20 seconds :tears:

Frank Zappa's solo in 'Muffin Man' on 'Bongo Fury'

And I forget the name of the band, nor do I know the guitar player, but the solo at the end of 'Rid Captain, Ride (Upon Your Mystery Ship)'!!!

Denny Dias solo in "My Old School'-Steely Dan

Joe Perry's solo in the middle of 'Train kept A Rollin'-Aerosmith

Yes, I use to have two of their albums, the first was self-titled, the second (I had, not necesssarily release order) was Ride Captain Ride, and I think there was a third and I am not sure if there were more. Ride Captain Ride was the only hit that I know of that they had,

Thought of another great, great guitar solo, from a guy not normally thought of as a 'guitar player'!

Springsteen's solo guitar duel with Little Steven in, 'It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City', from the Hammersmith Odeon-1975 CD!

It's incendiary!

Try Michael Schenker's solos ( esp. the last one) in the song Lights Out, from the album "Strangers in the Night" by UFO. :thmbsp:

I concur!
What great song and great record!:thmbsp:

How about Bill Nelson's solo from Bebop Deluxe's, 'Life in The Air Age'?
Or, Richard Thompson in just about every song he's ever done, but especially, 'Shoot Out The Lights'!

Wow!! I have Iron Butterfly and Ramatam records, (though I haven't played either in many years) and I'm familiar with Pinera, and his guitar work. But I never knew Pinera was the guitar player in Blues Image! You learn something new, everyday around here! That's why I love this place!

I see a couple of mentions of CCR in this thread. But two of John Fogerty's absolute best workouts are. 'Fortunate Son' and 'Ramble Tamble'. His guitar work in 'Ramble Tamble' can best be described as Scotty Moore on LSD! It's an amazing hybrid of rockabilly and pyschedelia.

There's no question that this is not the most technically impressive or face-melting guitar solo, but an entry into "guitar solos that get me every time I hear them" category: the short solo at the end of the three-and-a-half minute instrumental section in Weezer's Only In Dreams. For my money, it is one of the greatest rock songs of all time (many definitions of rock). Even though I'm expecting it, that short solo right before the song ends just blows me away.

Too bad Weezer hasn't released a good record in over a decade, now.
