I have a opportunity to pick up a Linn Basik with the Akito arm. It is missing it's dust cover and need a new cartridge. Overall pretty nice condition.

I'm seeking opinions on this deck. Also, is $175 a decent value?

Thanks, RC

Orion Blue Book Sez:
Linn Basik w/Akito Tonearm
2-speed belt driven
Years:1989
Price:$795

The Akito Tonearm by itself is $495,a good step up from the Basik Tonearm.

Ive heard so many good things about Linn TTs and Tonearms, that I would be very surprised if this wasnt a damned good deal.Linn people tend to be fanatical in their devotion, and if you dont like it,you could probably flip it for a profit.I had a pair of Linn Kans which were interesting sounding to me,but left me kind of cold, that were snapped up when I put them up for auction.
Id snap it up in a heartbeat.

Thanks Jimmy,

I knew the Akito was a upgrade or at least a revised arm but don't know much about Linn products in general. It was somewhat dark in there and he was just closing up when I dropped by. Not wanting to hold him up, I looked at the table briefly and made a mental note of what he said about the arm. I am going to call him shortly and verify what arm the Basik has mounted on it.

We only spoke for a short time and I was sure he said it was the Akito arm.

Seems like it might be worth a shot, RC.

I remember seeing/hearing one at a Linn dealer many many years ago but my recollection of it is way lost in the haze. It wasn't in the LP12 league but I think it was regarded as a great price point alternative and for $175, I'd definitely give it a try.

Thats what I figured Bill. I'm not expecting LP12 performance at all but seems like a solid table/arm at that price point. Who knows, the Akito my find its way onto another table down the road if its do-able.

I just got off the phone with him and it does have the Akito arm so I guess I'm set.

Pictures no that it's home.

I have been bussssssy with other shite. It's sitting in the other room with a brand spank'in new in the box Shure M97xe ready to be mounted.

Anyone have an objection to the Linn basik/ Akito / M97xe combo raise your hand now or forever hold your peace.

Looks very nice, but seems to be saying dust me!

It does look dusty but I think its more an overview of my photography skills, reflection and shadow. The top surface is kind of a dark grey slate and is showing those reflections and shadows oddly.

The last Linn basik I had got sold for 3 times what you paid. Hell the akito sells for more then you paid. That little table you got there is one HELLUVA a table and can spank many around like little Biotches. Make sure it gets the cartridge it deserves and your set for a very long time...

By the way out of the 50-75 tables Ive owned that is one of two I regret selling.

Also just notice your Akito is a version 1 if you wondered.

Like I said grumpy, Linn is not a new name for me but I have never owned one or studied up on their lineup.

How many versions on the Akito arm were made and how can you tell?

Good info., thanks

Memory ain't what it used to be but if I recall version 2 of that arm had a brass or gold colored bearing which is visible. Not seeing that color near the bearing was what i based calling it a version 1 one.

Hi,

I'd say that was a good buy, I actually bought a Linn Basik turntable new in 1990 for approx. 800 dollars. Still have it and enjoy using it. The Akito arm I think is very good, while the turntable itself is fairly similar to a Rega turntable, minus the glass platter. Not at all in the same league as a Linn LP12 or some other suspended turntables, but still very good for the money you paid. Incidentally, the cover lid is exactly the same as that on the Linn LP12, so it should be possible to get a new one from a Linn dealer or (perhaps preferably) second hand.

All the best,
Jake

Excellent! I think you are really going to like it Nate. I'm enjoying the hell out of mine and don't miss the Thorens in the least.

Yours even has a cover and mine is still nekkid.
