now that sounds interesting. :sigh:
pmsummer 09-13-2007, 11:40 AM John Cale's version of "The Streets of Laredo" is certainly interesting.
Richard Thompson's cover of Britney Spear's "Oops... I Did It Again" certainly goes places the original missed.
Johnny Cash's version of NiN's "Hurt (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8bnNCqjCcw&mode=related&search=)" shouldn't be missed.
pmsummer 09-13-2007, 11:45 AM Oh yeah, this...
Heartbreak Hotel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDe-HcHJsX0): John Cale, Shawn Colvin & Richard Thompson

Yeah thats a good one! You have to love Cale's deadpan singing. Being a Velvets junkie I am surprised I had not heard this one.
KeninDC 09-13-2007, 11:49 AM The Flying Burrito Brothers do a swell cover of the Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody."
If I'm alone in my car, it can bring tears to my eyes (can't let people I know see me crying - not manly).

Cale's even spookier solo version was on "Slow Dazzle".
pmsummer 09-13-2007, 12:19 PM Here's a garage/indie band's bad cover of Joy Division's cover of the Velvet Underground's Sister Ray (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MpXQxAXHdK4).

I don't know, I don't watch tv, I listen to music.
The song is off Jeff's "Grace" album.
Unfortunatly Jeff's career came to an early end when he drowned, I believe he was only 31 at the time.
If you don't have the "Grace" album, it's one you should get, it's outstanding and Jeff's vocal range is nothing short of amazing.

Wasn't that John Cale's version (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckbdLVX736U&mode=related&search=)?
(I don't/didn't watch the OC.)

Come to think of you are right. :thmbsp:
pmsummer 09-13-2007, 12:59 PM OK, one last John Cale cover...
No link, no recording, but I heard him do a cover of J.J. Cale's "Cocaine" on night in the '80s that might have scared a few folks straight.
John Cale didn't appreciate the request, but he was ready for it.

Scuzzer 09-13-2007, 06:20 PM Jeff Buckley doing Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah"
Actually, not to overun this thread with John Cale references, his version on Fragments for a Rainy Season is my definitive version.
Scuzzer 09-13-2007, 06:24 PM Cale's even spookier solo version was on "Slow Dazzle".
His current live version is by far the weirdest of all. Not better. Just weird.
onepixel 09-13-2007, 06:36 PM Tom's Diner/Walk on the Wild Side Cover/Remix
I can't remember who at the moment but it's a house remix melding of Tom's Diner (Suzanne Vega) and Walk on the Wild Side (Lou Reed). Very cool.
TeeDeeJr 09-13-2007, 07:40 PM U2 covering "Fortunate Son" & "Paint it Black"
Ryan Adams covering Oasis' "Wonderwall"

JerryM 09-14-2007, 02:18 PM Toots and the Maytals do a reggae version of John Denver's Country Road. I know it seems like an odd concoction, but it works.

I saw the late Yellowman do that one live back in Champaign. Very cool.
Along those lines check out the soundtrack to "50 First Dates". It is reggae covers of popular 80's tunes. Even includes Ziggy Marley doing The Cars' "Drive". My fave is UB40 doing "Every Breath You Take". Well worth a listen if you like the reggae vibe.

hifidolatry 09-14-2007, 03:25 PM Michael Hedges - "A Love Bizarre" by Sheila E/Prince.

OK, 2 words....Pat Boone (http://www.amazon.com/Metal-Mood-More-Mr-Nice/dp/B000005KOE/ref=pd_bbs_sr_5/103-2410460-6279016?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1189803864&sr=8-5).

Macaroon 09-14-2007, 10:47 PM Simon & Garfunkel's "America" by Yes . . . they made it their own.
amnesiac 09-21-2007, 11:29 AM From Burt Bacharach's "One Amazing Night" CD.
What's New Pussycat? - Mike Myers
Baby It's You/A Message to Michael - Chrissie Hynde
Across the Universe/Beatles - Fiona Apple
Somewhere Over The Rainbow - Israel Kamakawiwo'ole
I actually prefer the Rufus Wainwright cover of Across the Universe from the I Am Sam soundtrack, which was overall a pretty stellar collection of Beatles covers imo
And there's a version of Israel Kamakawiwo'ole singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow and it goes into What a Wonderful World, and that song is just fantastic.
And I second Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah because i'm partial to Jeff Buckley and because I'm sick of hearing the other covers.
Oh and Ryan Adams' Wonderwall is a great interpretation, though I can't say I particularly like the original... Oasis is down in my books right now.
Sixpence None The Richer, I think mostly because of their singer's voice, has put out some great covers including Crowded House's Don't Dream it's Over, they also did a U2 cover somewhere...
oh and i like Stars' cover of The Smiths' This Charming Man, even though this is more of my Stars and Smiths love than the cover
hillaryj 09-21-2007, 01:06 PM I love M. Ward and he has a cover of Bowie's song "Let's Dance" on his 2003 release "Transfiguration of Vincent".
