View Full Version : Songs That Make You Cry

Since I admitted to being a cry baby in Spartanmanor's "Cool Covers" thread (http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=126253), I thought I'd ask folks what songs make them cry, choke back tears, or blubber until thick, viscous spit bubbles form.

My weeper?

The Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses" is particularly sad. Its depiction of how depression and descent into drug use can devastate a relationship is poignant. Gram Parson's Flying Burrito Brothers version really hits home.

What's your sad song?

Sad but true it's XTC's Making Plans for Nigel. My wife and I used to have the greatest cat named Nigel (RIP) and the song always reminds me of him.

...sissy boy.

You just lost your überleet status. :D

Actually...if you can admit that your ever more cool. But please keep the viscous bubbling to yourself.

"Wild Horses" done by The Sundays is even more emotional but doesn't get me teary eyed. The one that did it, is "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro. I remember hearing this as a kid. Talk about sad.

I knew this would come up, but I figured it would be Mitsuman who used it first.

That song makes me cry also. Though not from sadness...from the pain! :D

Seriously... to keep on topic... Shannon by Henry Gross was emotional to me. Especially when I found out it was about his dog.

In the tears of joy / tears from laughter vein:

"Lick My Love Pump", a portion of a great musical trilogy in the key of D minor, the saddest of all keys, played on a piano, you know, just simple lines intertwining, by Nigel Tufnel of the band Spinal Tap. :D

Runner up is "I Can Let Go Now" from Michael McDonald's first solo album. When you just hear it its a competent but not special love-lament about moving on with your life. But they used it in the final episode of "China Beach", the one that takes place in the current day, and play it over a scene where the surviving MASH unit members are visiting the Viet Nam Memorial in DC. Brutal.

"Baby it's You" by Smith can come pretty close. :tears:

Gayle McCormick's highly emotional delivery is so intense, you can almost feel the pain in her voice. It's even better if you listen to the studio or live performance, while you read the lyrics.

Here's a link to a 1969 Live performance (3:35), and the words are below it. This live cut is very close to the studio version. The studio version is just as intense, just a bit cleaner lyrics... and the music is better because of the control a studio has in cutting the final product.

Title:BABY IT'S YOU
Artist:Smith
Writers/Producers: Bacharach/David/Williams

Lyrics:

It's not the way you smile that touched my heart.
It's not the way you kissed that tears me apart.

Many, many, many nights go by.
I sit alone at home and cry over you.
What can I do?
Don't want nobody, nobody
Cause, baby, it's you.
Baby, it's you.

Is it true what they say about you?
They say you'll never, ever, never be true.
It doesn't matter what they say.
I know I'm gonna love you any old way.
What can I do?
What 'bout you?
Don't want nobody, nobody.
Baby, it's you.
Baby, it's you.

Baby.

It doesn't matter what they say.
I know I'm gonna love any old way.
What can I do?
What 'bout you?
Don't want nobody, nobody.
Baby, it's you.
Baby, it's you.

Don't leave me alone.
Come on home.
Baby, it's you.
Baby, it's you.
You know I need your lovin'
You know I love you.
Baby, it's you.
Baby...

When I was a kid, there was a record called "Old Rivers." Done by, of all people, Walter Brennan. No singing, just a vocal narrative over chorus and orchestra. Now it would be about as hokey as a song could be, but back then I thought it was the saddest thing I'd ever heard. Anyone remember it?

Tears of joy:

"Warmth of the Sun" by the Beach Boys. That song is always a late afternoon on the beach at Pt. Magu in California in 1969/1970. The moms at the naval base would take us out there for the day while the men were in Vietnam.

Daddy Never Was The Cadillac Kind by Confederate Railroad. Not a huge fan of the band, nor country music that much, but I to this day can't listen to it. It's basically a guy reminiscing about his no-nonsense, practical father who had no use for fancy things:

>Daddy never was the Cadillac kind
He said some things just glitter and shine
He taught us that love was the one thing money couldn't buy
Daddy never was the Cadillac kind<

A little back ground...my dad was always a Ford man, refusing to own anything else. I know everyone is loyal to certain brands, but he always said he wouldn't own a GM product if they gave it to him. He was so pleased when I purchased my first car (on my own) and it was, what else, a Ford.

He died in '89, and towards the end of the funeral, when everybody got in our cars and made our way to the cemetary, I noticed that the hearse was an older model Lincoln (late '70s?). I kinda got a chuckle out of that. I asked one of the funeral directors about it a day or two later and he apologized for the old car. He said, "Our regular hearse had to go in the shop just a day before your Dad's funeral...we've had nothin but trouble with it ever since we got it." I said it was ok, no big deal, then I asked what kind of vehicle it was and he said, "It's an '86 Caddy".

How to make Gravy - Paul Kelly

lyrics

Hello Dan, it's Joe here, I hope you're keeping well
It's the 21st of December, and now they're ringing the last bells
If I get good behaviour, I'll be out of here by July
Won't you kiss my kids on Christmas Day, please don't let 'em cry for me
I guess the brothers are driving down from Queensland and Stella's flying in from the coast
They say it's gonna be a hundred degrees, even more maybe, but that won't stop the roast
Who's gonna make the gravy now? I bet it won't taste the same
Just add flour, salt, a little red wine and don't forget a dollop of tomato sauce for sweetness and that extra tang
And give my love to Angus and to Frank and Dolly,
Tell 'em all I'm sorry I screwed up this time
And look after Rita, I'll be thinking of her early Christmas morning
When I'm standing in line

I hear Mary's got a new boyfriend, I hope he can hold his own
Do you remember the last one? What was his name again?
(Just a little too much cologne)
And Roger, you know I'm even gonna miss Roger
'Cause there's sure as hell no one in here I want to fight
Oh praise the Baby Jesus, have a Merry Christmas,
I'm really gonna miss it, all the treasure and the trash
And later in the evening, I can just imagine,
You'll put on Junior Murvin and push the tables back
And you'll dance with Rita, I know you really like her,
Just don't hold her too close, oh brother please don't stab me in the back
I didn't mean to say that, it's just my mind it plays up,
Multiplies each matter, turns imagination into fact
You know I love her badly, she's the one to save me,
I'm gonna make some gravy, I'm gonna taste the fat
Tell her that I'm sorry, yeah I love her badly, tell 'em all I'm sorry,
And kiss the sleepy children for me
You know one of these days, I'll be making gravy,
I'll be making plenty, I'm gonna pay 'em all back.

Enya - Exhile

Cold as the northern winds
In December mornings,
Cold is the cry that rings
From this far distant shore.

Winter has come too late
Too close beside me.
How can I chase away
All these fears deep inside?

I'll wait the signs to come.
I'll find a way
I will wait the time to come.
I'll find a way home.

My light shall be the moon
And my path - the ocean.
My guide the morning star
As I sail home to you.

I'll wait the signs to come.
I'll find a way
I will wait the time to come.
I'll find a way home.

Who then can warm my soul?
Who can quell my passion?
Out of these dreams - a boat
I will sail home to you.

My Dying Bride - For My Fallen Angel

As I draw up my breath
And silver fills my eyes
I kiss her still
For she will never rise
On my weak body
Lays her dying hand
Through those meadows of Heaven
Where we ran
Like a thief in the night
The wind blows so light
It wars with my tears
They won't dry for many years
Loves golden arrow
At her should have fled
And not Death ebon dart
To strike her dead

Like Hell is For Children - Pat Benatar?
Good reason... it addresses child abuse.

They cry in the dark, so you cant see their tears
They hide in the light, so you cant see their fears
Forgive and forget, all the while
Love and pain become one and the same
In the eyes of a wounded child
Because hell
Hell is for children
And you know that their little lives can become such a mess
Hell
Hell is for children
And you shouldnt have to pay for your love with your bones and your flesh

Its all so confusing, this brutal abusing
They blacken your eyes, and then apologize
Youre daddys good girl, and dont tell mommy a thing
Be a good little boy, and youll get a new toy
Tell grandma you fell off the swing

Because hell
Hell is for children
And you know that their little lives can become such a mess
Hell
Hell is for children
And you shouldnt have to pay for your love with your bones and your flesh

No, hell is for children

Hell
Hell is for hell
Hell is for hell
Hell is for children

Hell
Hell is for hell
Hell is for hell
Hell is for children

Hell
Hell is for hell
Hell is for hell
Hell is for children

Hell is for children
Hell is for children

Wild horses is one of my favorites, I'd have to say Lobo "Don't
Expect me to be your friend".

As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls + It's For You - Pat Metheny

The section with the children's voices on a playground nails me every time. Follow that up with It's For You, and it's Verklempt City--change, travel, hope, uncertainty. And it evokes the ending of "Fandango," when Kevin Costner has one last dance with an old flame and realizes that his gang is finished forever.

Marty Robbins
The Ballad of the Alamo

In the southern part of Texas
Near the town of San Antone
Like a statue on his pinto rides a cowboy all alone
And he sees the cattle grazing where a century before
Santa Anna's guns were blazing and the cannons used to roar
And his eyes turn sorta misty
And his heart begins to glow
And he takes his hat off slowly...

To the men of Alamo.

George Jones
Transcribed by John King

G C G
Imagine a world where no music was playing
G D
then think of a church where nobody's praying
G G7 C G
if you've ever looked up at a sky with no blue
G D G
then you've seen a picture of me without you

G
C G
Have you walked in a garden where nothing was growing
G D
or stood by a river where nothing was flowing
G G7 C G
if you've seen a red rose unkissed by the dew
G D G G7
then you've seen a picture of me without you

C G
Can you picture Heaven with no angels singing
G D

or a quiet Sunday morning with no church bells ringing
G G7 C G

if you've watched as the heart of a child breaks in two
G D G
then you've seen a picture of me without you

G D C G
then you've seen a picture of me without you

The second time I saw George, a few years ago. He turned 76 this week. This was the first song he sang. I looked around to see if anyone saw me crying. Everyone was looking around doing the same as me.

Your choice of an Eagles tune reminded me of Desperado. It makes me think of my older brother. Fits him to a T. That is what makes it sad

"Drive" by the Cars.

Danced to that tune with a certain girl on a special night, years later she tragically passed.
