Folks: I'm sitting here in Europe, my son is in college in the U.S., and he just bought his dream car: an early 90's Toyota Supra. He bought it from a friend of a friend, and it's actually in pretty good shape. However, the seller had been thinking of making a quasi-racer out of it, and so had installed a heavy duty clutch in the thing. My son (who's learning to drive a manual for the first time) tells me that the clutch really grabs and is tough to slip -- not the best set-up for casual driving, especially when roads get winter slippery. (And it's not that it's just because he's a neophyte that he finds the clutch stiff, as all his experienced car club friends find it grabby too.)

So I'm thinking of telling him to replace the clutch for something more suitable, but frankly I have zero idea what that would cost to have done by a responsible mechanic.

Does anyone have any ballpark idea of what I'd be looking at? Thanks.

Ideal solution. Join a club with supra guys, and trade them the clutch in your sons car for their labor putting in a new clutch.

Your son buys OEM clutch, his buddies install it in exchange for the heavy one.

I have to imagine around 600 with another clutch, keep in mind he can likely sell the one that comes out on the bay or something.

I don't know labor for sure. Where does he live? I always do my own work.

I don't know on the Supra for sure, but installing a clutch in an FR car isn't complicated, just a lot of hard work. He could do it in a weekend in the drive way. Might be a good way to get his feet wet.

If that's not an option for him, I'd suggest taking it to a local AAMCO type place and getting a free estimate. I would think that most of those type places would offer a good warrenty on the work as well.

But just like 240, I do my own work most of the time, so it's hard to say.

Thanks, guys. I appreciate the assistance. Now to talk my son into it...

I doubt anyone is going to swap labor for a clutch.

- Buy a HD new clutch and install it once.

or

- Trade labor for an HD clutch and do the job twice.

The clutch on my BMW 540i cost around $1000 for parts an labor. My mechanic does everything while he is in there. I do most of the work on my car but this is one job I'll pay someone to do.
