Hi

I have been thinking that Suzanne Vega is another one of those artists that have been lost from the 80's. Every once in a while I hear a comedian bagging on her music, and that bites.

I have several of her discs, and go through cycles of listening to her music. just finished listening to her debut album, and man its good stuff. Complex lyrics that paint great images. Excelent guitar playing, and a distinctive voice. Some of her later albums such as 99 degrees Feirenheit point to a electronica influence, or at least independent pop. This lady is far more talented than people gave her credit for.

For what its worth I hear she has just released a new disc, I am curious to hear what she has come up with.

Regards
Mister Pig

She's always been one of my favorite artists. I always though the people that hammered on her just had no clue about a great vocalist, and wonderful song writer.. I figured they were just the pop market fans.

I always liked her quite a bit. She does great covers of China Doll and Cassidy on the Dead tribute album Deadicated. There's also an excellent live solo acoustic performance of Stockings on a compilation called Live from the River Music Hall (WXRV-FM Haverhill, MA).

I've always been a fan, but only have a couple of LPs. Unfortunately, like a lot of artists, people are only exposed to the 1 or 2 radio hits she ever had.

She's cream, man.

She rises to the top.

And therfore, is skimmed off the top, before the music is sent to be drunk by the masses.

Mr Pig, you got good taste.

I agree, she is one of the most underated performers out there.

If you have a good AV system go buy, borrow or rent Suzanne Vega Live at Montreux 2004 on DVD it has a DTS soundtrack , you will not be sorry .

I have 2 of her albums. The one that I think is an absolute classic is her first; the self titled one.

Marlene on the Wall is my favorite song from her.

What I know about the music business would fit into a thimble with room left over; but I figure she's another in a long line of talented musicians that are just not perceived (by the music industry) as palatable enough to be salable goods.

It's a shame that the listening public isn't given more of a chance to make that decision for themselves.

I agree with this post and most every other here. I have a couple of her cd's. Excellent singer and songwriter. She has much more skill than a lot of the pop artists that first became popular in the 80's. I have listened to a lot of cd's from a lot of different artist in depth, and she is one of the best.:thmbsp:

Well, Suzanne Vega had some airplay and success.

There's an interesting story of a woman here in MA, Jen Trynin, who almost made the big time. Indeed, one song, Better than Nothing got significant airplay, at least around here. FWIW, IMNSHO it's a great song. Problem was that she came along at just the wrong time (as Alannis was exploding with "Jagged Little Pill") and got lost in the scuffle.

She's written a book about her experiences and her near-brush with fame and fortune.

I have loved her first album since I bought it new in 86 or so.I didnt really like the next one,Solitude Standing that much, and Luka from that just got on my nerves.I always associate Luka and Whats the Matter Here by 10000 Maniacs, because of the subject matter.Whats a shame is that both artists did much better work that people just didnt get to hear.
I kept up with Suzanne during the late 80's till the mid 90's,and had lost track of her.Ill have to try out the new album.
FWIW,her first album is very easy to find on vinyl here for some reason, and almost always in very good shape.
