Fish or Hogarth, that is the question. Me...I love the Hogarth period. The early Fish albums were good mind you, I just love the music from Hogarth better. And this album just rocks imo. An underrated gem.

Jan Dukes de Grey-Mice And Rats In The Loft

Played often in my home since i first found out about it in 1975. What does it sound like...its on the Uk Transatlantic label ,so it must be folk. No! Maybe VDGG crossed with the ISB and Family. That can't describe it. I find many people can listen for a few seconds and have had others thank me profusely. Not one for the masses but so rewarding for the few.

I haven't heard Mice And Rats In The Loft, but I am very fond of my copy of Jan Dukes de Grey's first album, Sorcerers, 1969. I'd compare the sound and style of Sorcerers to the works of Incredible String Band and Dr Strangely Strange of this same period.

I have heard some of Sorcerers and it is on my to get list. Your assesment of it is correct. The second album may fall into the school of "better music through heavy drugs"or something along that line. It seems none of its creators were ever hear from again.

I wasn't a huge fan of Subterranea as I thought it were over-long; it could have and should been edited down to a single CD, IMHO of course.

I have Seventh House and Dark Matter and of the two Seventh House is my fave...I'd say its my fave prog CD of that year.

Well, it depends on what style of "prog" you want to listen to...the Gabriel-Genesis clone Marillion, or the alt-rock Marillion, or the dark-rock Marillion (no, its not goth). Marillion has always had a dark brooding aesthetic, no matter which period you dive into. Myself, my favorite albums are Brave ('91?) and Marbles ('04). Actually I love Marbles, but by all means get the single disc version. If you find the double disc for cheap, get it and I'll tell what track order to play it (and what to leave out) as it is just too exhaustive a listen.

For the early Fish-Gabriel-soundalike stuff, most proggers like the first three (or so) of Script For A Jesters Tear (with a title like that, it couldn't be anything but a prog album), Fugazi, and Misplaced Childhood. I do like Script, as it is as good as any rock album in the early '80s.

A more indepth look at the albums can be had at AllMusicGuide (google it) and the Dutch Progressive Rock Page (DPRP for short) which can be useful, however it can be a tad fanboyish. Here's a link for DPRP:

I would start at the beginning with the first four albums, i.e., the Fish era:

Script For A Jester's Tear (1983)
Fugazi (1984)
Misplaced Childhood (1985)
Clutching At Straws (1987)

Of these four, I regard Misplaced Childhood as essential. If I was asked to rank these four in order of personal preference:

Misplaced Childhood (1985)
Clutching At Straws (1987)
Script For A Jester's Tear (1983)
Fugazi (1984)

I have several of the post 1987 "Hogarth era" albums, I do not like any of them as well as the first four (well, maybe one or two are preferable to Fugazi) albums.

I'm in the thanking you profusely crowd. I picked it up yesterday since you mentioned it here, and can't stop playing it.

So... thanks!

I just picked up Genesis - "Duke." I always liked this album, but the recording was terrible, it made my system sound like I was listening to the album on a boombox. I'm glad I waited to buy it, because they re-mixed and re-mastered it and it sounds wonderful! It also includes a bonus DVD with some live concert footage (complete songs) a few videos and some interviews which I haven't watched yet. Although I like the earlier Genesis, with Gabriel and Hackett much better, this is one of the better albums from the Collins, Rutherford, and Banks period. On the live footage you get to see Darryl Sturmer play, he's damn good!

It can be a tough listen especially for those unfamiliar with Tull. I don't know why, but this album grabbed me right away. Understanding the history behind the album helps quite a bit. The Hare Who Lost His Spectacles is the intermission piece between the two acts of the main story. Basically, it's about a man who dies and faces judgement and who is questioned by lucifer about his worthiness and so forth. Neat concept. I guess the whole thing was supposed to be a play. The Hare Who Lost His Spectactles was made into a play and the video of that is included in the remaster.

Sorry for the long wind.

Cheers.

Yes he did. What brought the whole listening session on was the fact that the two of us had seen Tull the night before (they performed an abbreviated Thick as a Brick). Wanted him to hear it as it was intended to sound. The concert was his second time seeing Tull.

I was very fortunate to have a second row center seat at the Landmark Theater in Syracuse in the Spring of 1982 to see King Crimson (with Fripp, Belew, Levin & Bruford--Discipline Tour). Small historic theater (Egyptian Revival adding to the ambience), incredible acoustics and a very appreciative crowd. Belew in his Hawaiian shirt (ELEPHANT TALK!!) and Mr Fripp in his requisite three-piece-suit with reel-to-reel tape recorder for on-the-spot Frippertronics. Quite a show that night...One More Red Nightmare...

I'm sure gonna try.
King Crimson came to me rather late in life. I owned Starless and Bible Black literaly from the day it was released (The Night Watch blew me away). It wasn't till I was in my 40's that I went back and started from the beginning. Now it seems I can't get enough. My favorite period is from In the Court of the Crimson King right through Starless and Bible Black.

If "SACD" = "HDCD", then yes. I don't see "SACD" on the digipak scribbling or obi, but then maybe it's been rendered in Japanese? In any case I do not have an SACD CDP, just a Rega, but this disc still sounds better than both of my vinyl copies (UK Island & MFSL) and any other CD I have ever tried. It's important to note that while this a Japanese RI, it is the Robert Fripp Remix which makes all the difference, especially with respect -- and this is a bit of a surprise given Fripp -- to the "bringing forward" of Greg Lake's vocals, which in all previous mixes sounded like they were recorded w/out the benefit of a mic. Hell, I think he actually pushed back the guitar sounds - rhythm guitar especially - as a means of achieving this end. A most magnanimous gesture on Fripp's part, if you ask me, and strong indication that he executed this remix to serve the music, not himself.

Cantabury Guy

Good analysis about Lake's vocals. I'm not much into Fripp's RI because I usually dont hear "the difference" . Looks like this one will be the exception.
