I told my girlfriend tonight that I am going to be getting most of my music on vinyl tonight and this was the transcript from instant messenger.

me: i have decided that i am going to go mostly vinyl from now on
her: ok, sounds good
her: i don't really use cd's anymore
except in the car
me: why are you all for that?
her: because i like the sound of records

Of course then we talked about how she would have to learn how to use the TT. Who would have expected this? Does anyone else have a wife/girlfriend that says these kinds of things?

A friend (female) of mine prefers vinyl and even cassettes over compact discs. When I asked why she said: "I don't know...there's something about CD's that bothers me. I can't pay attention to the music and find my mind wandering. I always end up reading instead of listening to the music. When I play my records, they get my full attention." Hmm. Pieces of the music missing? Is it a result of Redbook's sampling rate? Personally, I have no problem with listening to compact discs, but fully understand where she's coming from. Analog is more involving.

My wife prefers CD's. And satellite radio.
She regularly says, "You've gotta be the only one out there looking for that stuff." However, she doesn't give me too hard a time about it. She knows that women who get hot for record collectors are few and far between.

Ah, no.

This is a typical conversation with my beloved wifey:

me: "I'll be downstairs for a while testing some new speakers. It may get a little loud."

wife: (silence)

me: "I found an old Rolling Stones album in mono at a garage sale, I'm going to play it loud for a few minutes."

wife: (silence) (shrug of shoulders)

For sit down listening the wife much prefers Vinyl for background noise while reading or house work she likes either FM or her CD's She seams to know how to use my Pro-Ject RM-5 totally manual table just fine including the record clamp. Granted she does lift the tonearm with her finger and not the lift sometimes but she has never nerfed anything so I guess I won't bitch to much

Real leather is more sensual and makes you sweat less than vinyl. Oh, wait a minute...you mean vinyl LPs! :D

Seriously, keep this girlfriend (unless she has no arms and huge buck teeth and a voice like a buzz-saw) and "break her in" to vinyl/analog/vintage gradually. You'll enjoy many hours of pleasant music listening together.

As for the girl who ended up reading when CDs were on, I tend to agree IF you are listening with typical "department store" type players, amps and speakers. CDs only sound good when (1) they are well-mastered, which is perhaps about 1/3 of all CDs, and (2) they are played on GOOD gear. Otherwise, that "flat" or "thin" very digital sound is just not very involving.

Don't forget Johnny Mathis. In the 60's, his records were considered great makeout records. They seemed to work better than Bob Dylan...

Since women can hear a broader range of frequency then men can, it would make sense that vinyl would sound even better to them than it does to us. Which is saying something.

Johnny Mathis, Barry White, Donna Summer? I used to play Martin Mull's "I've slept with thousands of girls, please be one of them".

All the replies have been great guys. I will have to stock up on some love makin music. There is a lot of pressure to propose.....her whole family is just waiting for it to happen, as is mine, and our friends etc.... I couldn't believe she said it, but I guess she has been paying more attention than I thought. Maybe I can even get her to come to the fest with me. She still doesn't understand all the gear yet, but that what time is for right?
