Go ahead and self-identify as both an AKer, and a SMAC member! Don't be scared! Here, I'll go first:

Hey! I'm Ed in Ann Arbor, and I'm a SMAC member! I've even hosted a few of the meets. My handle on AK is Squidward. I like the SMAC because its a great way to get exposure to a wide assortment of different systems and ideas, and I've made a bunch of great friends in the process! I also have a major tube habit now, and this is a great way to commune with the other junkies!

I'm Steve. Been a SMAC member since the first meeting. I generally only attend the ones that are really close to my house as I partake in some consumption and get paranoid about driving under the influence. Tom will tell you I'm :whip:. I have had the pleasure of meeting some great people and listening to much gear and music that I otherwise, would have never had an opportunity to enjoy.
I would like to host a meet someday, but, frankly have nothing of the caliber of equipment that would hold anyone's attention for long. Maybe just an outdoor cook out next year with some food, drinks, and tunes. :scratch2:
Also, a big thanks to Dave for the space, and Jeff for pulling it all together. :thmbsp:

Hello SMAC members!

I'm Dan W. and have been with SMAC from the beginning. Used to be in Livonia, and hosted a meeting there, but am now in Farmington Hills. Once I get things all sorted out in the new place I'll ask to host again.

Many thanks to Grumpy for taking SMAC to the next level and adding it to AK and to Jeff for keeping our great group going.

I'm Dave Newman and I've been to 4-5 SMAC meets in the past year and a half. Some of the west side ones are a bit tough for me to make since I live about as far east as you can get in SE Mich. I have not hosted yet, and probably won't because of my location. I have a tube habit, a solid state habit, speaker, turntable, tape, and record habit. The meets i've been to have all been enjoyable, especially when Tom is there with some fancy power wires so we can pick on him. I guess it doesn't really take expensive wire to pick on Tom, though.

Thanks to squidward for starting this post so that I can show my lack of creativity in the morning.

I'm Dave, I've been to couple SMAC meetings and they're a great way to get exposure to a variety of systems, the food and friends are always great too. I hope to host one of these sometime, possibly at the theatre I partner in, OK, I'll drag some Altecs down there and we'll see what they sound like in a 200 seat theatre!! Thanks to all who made this forum possible!!

Mark, contact AK member Jmathers and request that you be added to the monthly meeting email notice. Its simple as that :)

For those that do not know me I am Dave. Been to a few SMAC meets and hope to hit many more. Its always a real treat to attend. Where else can you hear tons of different systems and new music with some real fine folks.

I am writing this from RMAF and truth be told a SMAC meet is way more fun to me. Cant wait to hear Scotts system at the next meet. See you all there !

Hey Grumpy, bring back some stories and scoop from RMAF to share at the upcoming SMAC meet.

I made CES two years in a row ('04 and '05) but have not been back...too many people, too much to see and just not enough time to fit it all in. From what I've read RMAF seems to be scaled back in size and scope from CES with a more relaxed atmosphere...which is a bit more my style.

Hi!

I'm Andy and I make it to about every other meet we have. It's pretty convenient for me since so many of my fellow SMAC'ers live so close; rarely over an hour, sometimes only 15 minutes.

I really enjoy the meets for many of the same reasons the others have already mentioned; good people, gear, food, and music. I really doubt one could ever hear so much fine gear without some sort of group like this. There's usually 15-20 folks there so you can almost always find someone who shares one or more of your audio passions. Plus there's always new music to expand one's horizons; there's been more than one meet I've been able to bring some new relatively obscure score from that day to share, usually vinyl but sometimes CD or DVD.

The music swap, tube rolling, gear auditions, amp tests and DIY projects always make for a good time. I've said it before and I'll say it again, if there's a bunch of AKer's within an hour or two of each other, you really should think about having some sort of informal meetings like we do in SMAC. It really is a heckuva great way to spend a Saturday afternoon/evening/night.......

hey-Hey!!!,
I'm Douglas and I've been in since the Fall of 2005. I think I hosted two meets before moving to Ann Arbor. Now after a bit more re-org I'll be up for some more.

I like the DIY angle. I build my own, and I like sharing ideas with other folks who do the same...as well as demonstrating...:)
cheers,
Douglas

I'm Mike, and I've made it to one of the meets so far. I hope to make others, as time and family responsibilities allow. I enjoyed seeing everyone at the one I was able to attend this past spring.

I'm Mark - I've been to a few SMAC meets, and always look forward to these. Hope to host sometime once I get the basement refinish completed. I'm also into the DIY thing, both speakers and tube amps. And I like to modify anything which can be modded........

Hello, I'm Wiggy. You can call me Bill, but I like being Wiggy. Like you didn't know that. I don't know if I'm a SMAC member or not, but I'm on the mailing list and I have been to two of the meetings. I'd like to go to more, but they are on Saturdays and I often go out taking photos on Saturday. I also hate the fact that I can't host a meeting myself, since I live in a 9x12 room in Royal Oak.

I rent that room because I live in NC and my wife and I are trying to sell our house there and move here. I work in Warren and Milford, so something kind of in-between will be good. We need a big house and a big fenced back yard for the dogs to run. We also have Mrs. Wiggy's 80-year-old mom living with us, so we need room for her to run too.

I have enjoyed myself at the two SMAC meetings I have been to. I also take photos when I go, so watch out if you don't want your photo to be taken.

I also take product photos of audio equipment, so if you have an item that you'd like photographed, I'll be happy to do it for you. I shoot bar mitzvas and weddings too.

OK, that's it for now. I'm at work and I have been rudely assaulted by the Shop-Vac of Reality.

Smooches,

Bill (but call me Wiggy, dammit)!

Hello, my name is Dan and I am a SMAC member from the Toledo Ohio area. SMAC is awesome for several reasons..

1. There are some great people in SMAC.
2. The systems are really cool.
3. The get-togethers are fun.
4. There are some great people in SMAC.
5. I don't think there has been a meet I attended where I didn't learn several things about audio and music.
6. The music is really cool.. or at least almost all of it.. )

Need I say more?

Hi all, I'm Greg. LIve in the Ann Abor area. Been a member for a couple years now (I'm one of the "Older guys"). My audio background is Pro Audio. Mostly concert FOH (Front Of House) and Foldback (Stage Monitor) mixing. Some studio work but not much. Also a player (drums) since my teens.........(eons ago).
Been a SS (Solid State ) guy for a long time but hanging around these cats I have had a chance to hear alot of tube gear and am thinking (when I can afford it) about setting up a tube system in my "other" room in the basement.
Nice group of very knowlegeable people when it come to high end audio.
I try to make the meetings during the winter months. During the warmer months I DJ at classic car shows on the weekends so usually can't make the summer "getogethers". See ya all soon. GC :smoke:

Hey!
I'm Rob.
I'm the guy who will bring a whole bag of dusty old records to your SMAC meet, take over your TT, and then stay til the bitter end spinning some vintage vinyl. Turn on, tune in, and drop out...

Happy Listening! :beatnik:

(I found this great, though dormant thread, so I think I'll try to revive it.)

Hello! I'm Don and I live in Pontiac. I've been a bit of a "closet audiophile" for years but only recently have I pursued anything remotely serious. I discovered SMAC through Stereophile and attended my first gathering this past weekend at Ashok's. I met some great folks, heard some great music, and saw some great equipment. I think I might be hooked ...

I'm not much of a DIY guy and just have modest, off-the-shelf components. I listen mostly to classical, Jazz, and opera, though not always in that order. I have taken a big interest in records lately and I think I am in the midst of building a collection. (I am discovering that a benefactor and a time machine would be useful components to building a decent vinyl library.)

These forums have been a fantastic resource for my learning recently - great job AudioKarma!

I hope to make some more meets in the future ... see you then.

Howdy all. My name is Mark and I live in the Downriver.

I don't attend very many meets because I work a swing-shift and joint custody of a beautiful 7yr old daughter.

My system and knowledge are not to the level of some, but my shyness and appreciation exceeds most.

I'm currently running DQ-10s on Soundcraftsmen SS. When I open up some more room in my humble basement I will run A-7s on an ST-70 that has been went through by non other than our own Kegger himself.

I look forward to meeting many more people and getting to better know people I have already met.

Hey, it's me. I have an evolving system with Jensen Imperials, ESS EWGs, adcom amp, 300B tube amp, digital amp, Kenwood CD player, Octal phonostage, Yamaha FM tuner, DIY power supply, Heil tweeters, Onkyo turntable and parts for a DIY turntable that Newman and I are working on.
