Guys,
I need your help. A gentleman advertised a piece of furniture locally as a vintage record player. I called him and had him send some pictures. The pictures clearly show a Scott tube amp but I can't really tell about the turntable or speakers. I have been looking for a tube amp but don't really need the rest. I don't really want the amp if it doesn't work as I have little repair knowledge and even less time to fix things but I do know that the amp alone should be worth close to the $200 asking price if it is any kind of shape. He doesn't know if any of it works. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jeff

Speakers look like EV 12TRX or some variant. Would also be very nice!

Buy it! I would ask if he has plugged it in and find out as much of it's history as you can. If it has been a long time since it has been powered up, do so only with a variac and power it up slowly. Plan on spending some more money down the road for a rebuild, but I think it would be well worth it.

Not sure about the speakers (duplex?) or the turntable, but don't discard them until you do some homework on their possibilities.

I am sure others can be much more specific and give better guidance. But I do know enough that you should buy it.

If you go to bed right now, tomorrow will come more quickly.....
I concur, buy it...

That amp is a goodie at $200.You add in those full range drivers(they look like EV's to me,too)and youve got a very good deal going, and some good sounds once everything is back up to speed.

Well,
You were looking for furniture, and found vintage audio...Kind of like that guy in the bible who was looking for mules, and found royalty.
The worst case scenario is that you sell the amp for parts or repair and fetch at least 100$ (and still left with the rest of the stuff). Best case scenario? The amp is great:banana:, and you live happily ever after :music:.

I went out to see the goods this morning. The speakers weren't in great shape and the turntable was a disaster. Now the good news: The amp looked great. I offered him $125 for it and he took it. In retrospect, I may have done better but we're both happy. It sounds great too. Now I have to learn some new skills like perhaps how to bias an old tube amp.
Thanks for all your help in decision about this amp. I think that I'll be very happy.
By the way, just so you don't wonder about me, my daughter and I share this room. It is my second stereo room as well as her first play room.

I don't know how old your daughter is, but if it is a play room, I would put the exposed tube innerds and hot tubes up to where she can't get electricuted or burned.

You got a very good deal!!! Congrats.

No I didn't bring the speakers home. From your avatar, I can feel your disapproval:nono: I might could have sold them but I didn't think that they were in good enough shape to do so. I didn't want to stick someone with something that I didn't feel was first rate. They were very dry and brittle. I could have had them for $25 more. I just have never done the DIY thing. I'm not sure if I could.

My daughter has always kept away from the audio stuff. She has a healthy fear(of it and me). We are best buddies but she knows to stay away. In fact I'm going over it with her and she is seeing me type this. Thanks for the warning.:thmbsp:

I thought it was a package deal. If he wanted extra and they weren't to your liking, they aren't terribly rare.

The speakers would have been nice. Looks like you have a nice pair of mini-monitors, and that Scott has enough guts to dive them for sure, but should you hang in to the tube hobby you might really regert letting them slip by. BTW, I'm not talking about anything other than the drivers, who cares about the boxes? You could put those EV 12TRXBs on an open baffle, or many other enclosures. Oh, and you stole the amp.

Nice score on the amp! I have been searching for an old Scott tube integrated, but so far.....nothin! :)

The turntable was a Garrard. Right now I already own two turntables and don't have enough time to listen to them.

If it looked anything like these pics you might want to give the seller another call:301 (http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews/garrard/301.html)
Depending on the model, they can be worth + $1000.

The one in the picture is a changer. Doubt it is any loss.

That's one of my problems. I never throw anything away. In this case, however, I just made an offer on the piece that I wanted. It was hard to not take it all but in this case I was able.

Interesting thing this evening. I drug the Heresys upstairs to hook up to the tube amp, just wanting to see what it sounded like with efficient speakers. At ear-bleeding levels, they're really good, especially with Rock. At lower levels, however, the bass is missing and everything seems muffled as if coming out of a box (which I guess it is). My normal speakers are much less efficient and can't do some things as well but with the ribbon tweeters, they are better overall than the Klipsch speakers. I could see where I might like high efficiency speakers with this amp but just not the high efficiency speakers that I have.

Nice score on the Scott -- I've wanted one for a while, but am too cheap to pay market value. :D You got a steal, IMO. :thmbsp: Kudos as well for being able to walk away from the stuff that you didn't need or want -- I'd have taken the drivers as well, and left them sitting in storage for 5 years before selling them off on CL for what I paid for them.Best way to do this hobby is go after what you really want, and don't sweat the rest. Enjoy your new amp. :thmbsp:
