cactuscowboy 10-16-2007, 12:49 PM Greetings from Big Wonderful Wyoming!
My name is Dave Rose aka Cactus Cowboy. I live in Powell, about 75 miles east of Yellowstone National Park and 100 miles south of Billings, MT.
I've been collecting records for 40 years and own about 6,000 ranging from 100 year old 78s to recent releases. I also have about 700 CDs, a bunch of cassettes, 8-tracks, and a handful of Reel-To-Reel tapes. My musical tastes are wide ranging: Rock, Punk, Metal, Rap, Jazz, Blues, Country Western, Easy Listening, Classical, etc...
I own and operate Audio Tech Transfer, a business that transfers records and tapes to CD.
My current audio gear:
*Bang & Olufsen Beogram TX2 w/Soundsmith SMMC2 cartridge (stereo playback)
*JVC QL-A7 w/Grado ME+ (mono LP & 45 playback)
*Technics SP-15 w/RecoKut Transcribe Tonearm, Stanton 500VE cartridge, 2.0 diamond elliptical, 2.5 diamond elliptical, 3.0 diamond elliptical, 3.5 diamond elliptical, 4.0 diamond elliptical, 8.0 sapphire conical and 0.7 diamond conical stylii (78 rpm and 16" transcription disc playback)
*Hagerman Bugle Pro variable EQ preamp
*Pioneer SX950 receiver
*Sony TC-580 Reel-To-Reel deck
*Akai GXC-709D Cassette deck
*Montgomery Ward Airline Stereo 8-Track deck

ponderbear 10-16-2007, 12:53 PM Welcome, cactuscowboy!
If I could talk the rest of my family into it, I would be out there under that big ol' sky with you, bro. Bunch of city slickers I raised, somehow...
I made careful note of your gear, as that is the same idea for a home-based business I'm trying to float to my wife, so I can keep a good supply of vintage stuff on hand and in working condition.
Snade 10-16-2007, 12:58 PM 6,000 records.........I guess that's enough to qualify for membership to this club. :D

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone.
The "pigtailed one" is Tia, my 3 year old great niece. She loves records, especially The Chipmunks.
Funny you should mention the fires of 87 Sluggo. I was up in Yellowstone National Park last week. The extensive burn areas are recovering nicely. There are dense forests of lodgepole pines ranging from 5 to 15 feet tall in these areas. There's a more recent burn area near the east entrance and north of Yellowstone Lake. It's fascinating to see the cycle of death and rebirth initiated by fire.
meggy 10-16-2007, 10:26 PM Welcome! Sooo... do you get to buy up people's records after you transfer them to CD?

hakaplan 10-17-2007, 12:02 AM Welcome, Dave! Nice gear. Did you know that Wyoming was named after a county in Pennsylvania? I know, who cares? :D
cactuscowboy 10-18-2007, 03:55 PM Welcome! Sooo... do you get to buy up people's records after you transfer them to CD?
I wish I could tell you people are bringing in tons of obscure Psych, Prog, Punk, and Metal LPs, but that's not the case. I've transferred a lot of Andy Williams, Dean Martin, Country Western, Christmas and home recordings. Some people have proposed "do the transfer for free and you can keep the record in exchange". Usually the record in question is something like Barbra Streisand or Poco. Ummm.... no thanks!
It has led to people wanting to sell (or give) me unwanted record collections. The local Powell paper recently ran a story about my record collection and audio transfer business. The story went out on the AP wire and also ran in Billings, MT, and Cody, Jackson Hole, Casper, and Sheridan, Wyoming newspapers. I've fielded a lot of phone calls and enough offers of free records that I took a road trip yesterday to Basin, Sheridan and Buffalo.
Total score, all free records:
240 LPs (175 of which I donated to a thrift shortly after I picked them up)
15 45s
300 78s
The LPs are a mix of 50s Pop and 70s Rock. The 45s are mid 50s Jazz reissues, Ellington, etc.... The 78s are mostly 40s/50s Pop and Hillbilly in pristine condition, a half dozen kiddie records, a few 40s 12" Classical sets (uggh!), some 30s Jazz/Swing, and a few dozen 1900-1920s Classical one-sided discs on Victor and Columbia that look interesting.

Yes. I grew up in Pennsylvania. I know about Wyoming County but didn't make the connection. Interesting bit of trivia.
