So I just picked up a Sansui 9090 DB on the cheap from a gentleman on Craigslist. He said in the ad that when he last powered it up he smelled smoke so he powered down and is unsure what the problem is. I powered it up briefly without anything connected to it and the red "Protector" light flashes. I didn't smell/see any smoke or anything, but I didn't want to push my luck so I didn't keep it on for too long.

How should I go about diagnosing or trying to solve this problem? I'm attached a slew of topless shots in case those help, but if there's something else that it would be helpful to see, just let me know and I can get a shot of it.

I know I could always just take it to a tech (though I'd have to ask around for recommendations) and I'm definitely not opposed to that. I just want to make sure that's the best thing to do first. Thanks a lot for your thoughts.

Can't wait to get this monster working, it's massive and unbelievably heavy. I guess I'll need to get some speakers that can handle the power too, though, because I don't think my EPI 110s are up to the task :D :music:

1. replace fuse resistors. Do a search, there's tons of info
2. If any fuses are blown, check the output transistors first
3. Assuming you get the unit running, it will probably require a dolby board rebuild if channels drop out in the preamp.

Get it working right and enjoy it. The 9090DB has its flaws, but when properly repaired it is a fine machine :thmbsp:
