On the way back from a business trip last night I finally hooked up with a nice guy in the SF North Bay Area who I've been playing email and phone tag for about 10 days. He was offering a pair of Infinity RS 5000 speakers in nice shape for $75 on CL. Needles to say, I was interested

Finally got to his place after 9:00 PM (flight back was late because of SoCal fires), and there they were - now get this amongst about 10 pairs of other Infinity's in all stages of repair or reconditioning.

It's just his hobby. He did not know about us? I wrote our www address down for him and suggested he join. He's got some nice older floor standers. No RS II's or anything like that, but some I've never seen or heard of? Big towers did not sell too well around his area.

Paid him (he even discounted to $70) and was showing me all sorts of cool stuff when it was time for him to go to sleep (works early). Got them home and unloaded this morning. Hooked up and played them some when I got home tonight.

Sounds pretty good. EMITs working fine. New foams already on the woofs. Need same on the mids. Pots pretty clean - only one small "scratchy sounding area" for one mid on one speaker. Cabs about 98% and grills 99% - they are keepers  I'll fix up the minor bits as soon as the other projects are off the bench.

Anyone have MSRP for these? Maybe a scanned brochure? Looks like Christmas came early for me :music:

From Infinity Classics (http://www.infinity-classics.de/infinity/models/Reference-x000-series-1988/index-Reference-x000.htm), MSRP was $590 in 1988. No brochure, but a tech manual can be found here (http://www.infinity-classics.de/infinity/technik/manuals/RS_5000A_technical_sheet.pdf).

Thanks :) That's a good start. Maybe someone has a brochure or one will come up on the 'Bay?

OBTW- anyone know where to get the foams for the little midrange drivers with the poly-cones?

A brochure came up on the Bay. I got it coming. Now onto more practical issues. 1.) the foams on the mids are shot. Soft, goowy, crumbling - any source for those little ones? 2.) the woofers have had new foams installed in the past, but the feel very firm - almost hard and dried out - when you push on them around the edges, get the sensation that they are really hardening? Would like to know if the ones from the factory were soft and compliant or firm? If they were soft, where's best place to get good matches to originals?

Hi Broc
Sounds like you are in need of new surrounds, I doubt they should be hard and dry to the touch. A standard 10" kit from Parts Express (see link at the bottom of the page) would probably do the trick. As for glue I've used Weldbond for years now on poly and paper cones with very good luck. It can be found at most hardware stores for about $5 for 8 ounces :thmbsp:

Broc, for the typical woofer, the foam surrounds should be fairly soft and compliant. When you press lightly on them, look closely and watch for any little cracks forming around the indent. That's a good indicator that the foam has reached the end of its life, but isn't quite to the stage where it'll crumble if you drag a finger tip along it. For new surrounds, I typically refer to Reedger for quality replacements from an honest seller at a good price.

Refoam those suckers! It's easy. And those speakers will sound great.

Will do :) Already have the foam kit from Redger. Just waiting for the other two pair in front of then in the shop que to be done. Meanwhile. they still sound decent in the L Room playing at modest levels. Yeah Infinity :music::banana:

And the saga continues. Just picked up a pair of the cutest little Infinity's I've seen, RS-1000's for $12 at a thrift. They need foam of course, so I'll measure and get a pair from Reedger. I'm actually looking forward to A-B'ing these against my AR-8b that are about the same sized. I'll post the results when I get it done. It'll be later in the winter as there are few projects up first, but I'll get 'er done eventually :)

OK, Will do. May need a bit-o-help in the posting dept as I don't think we have direct up-load tools?

Great. Yes, we can upload a picture file directly within a posting here as an attachment. When you're posting a new message to the thread, click on the little paperclip on the menubar across the top of the edit window. That will open a dialog box where you can browse and upload the file from your computer.
