Picked up the freebie TT (fisher mt 6250). :D This thing is fairly heavy

Tested it after setting the arm balance and weight. The original Cart (a shure premier tan body) was trashed. Slapped another headshell in with an old grado cart in it and voila ! It works, and actually sounds pretty good.

With some further tweaking and a new cart I suspect this thing will work even better. Quartz lock, auto return works as does the magnetic brake. Ampegdan mentioned his quartz light or whatever that thing is flickers once in while, so does mine. No biggie. I noticed some hum, which I assume maybe from the internals of the cart interacting with the magnetics of the platter? Someone on my other post mentioned this, with grado carts. This deck uses the platter as the rotating magnet of the direct drive motor.

After a little cleaning she looks pretty good. Wood grain plinth and metal switch plates, a chrome tonearm. The dust cover is a mess. Needs some sanding and a buff job.

Ampegdan suggested a shure Shure 800E with an N92 stylus or a shure ME75. The original cart for this according to the net was a pickering model. Anyone care to add their two cents as to a new cart for this thing ?

I wasn't so much recommending those two as I was commenting on my good results with such inexpensive carts. I don't even know if those are still made.
Glad you got it up and running. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

Thanks for the info about the carts. I hadnt actually started trying to figure out which one to use yet. Figured I'd wait and see what other folks thought. That and I want to pick up a service manual for the thing before putting it into regular use.

I started messing with the cover by sanding with #600 wet or dry and a little meguires plastic polish - not bad so far.

I realize cartridges are a subjective topic - so, I welcome any and all replies.
