View Full Version : Realistic Mach Twos. What are they worth?

I just picked up a very nice pair of Mach Twos at Goodwill for $25. They could use foam, so I'll do that. I've heard these before and they're not my cup of tea, but I know they're popular. So I picked them up with an eye toward repairing and flipping them. What kind of money might I expect to get for a pair in good shape?

Thanks,

Ed

I sold mine for $250 after refoaming them. They weren't bad but just didn't do it for me so it funded some other toys.

I forget, are the Mach Ones the more sought after model, or is it the Twos?

I find the Mach II to be a much better sounding speaker. The Mach Is just do nothing for me at all, but from a resale standpoint, I think the Mach I has a bit more market value.

Exactly.

If you sell them for $150 on CL, they will go in no time.

I hooked them up to my T Amp and have to say, they sounded better than I remembered. Though now that I think about it, I think I heard Mach Is before, not Twos. So that may be the difference.

$150 is about what I was hoping for.

Now, anyone have foam for these mosters?

The tweeter on the Mach 2 is certainly an upgrade. At least IMO. Locally I see them sell for 150-200 in very good condition and as low as 40 with rounded corners etc.

The real question is, what is going to happen when my wife walks in the front door? Our living room, that just a few days ago had my nice set up with a Marantz 2230 and a pair of KLH Sixs now has the KLH Sixes, a pair of Ohm C3s the neighbor gave me, a Velodyne subwoofer the neighbor gave me, a pair of advents I pulled out to start working on new foam, a pair of Bozak B-301s I found at Goodwill yesterday and the Mach Twos.

all I have to say.....

Mach Ones are a sealed cabinet. more accurate bass and it doesnt get lost to another connecting room. sealed cabs are better.

the only place the Mach II shines better is the superhorn tweeter. but the Mach One horns are no slackers and can sound very nice too.

hands down I think the Mach Ones blow away the twos.

You may prefer sealed cabs, but they are not necessarily better than other cabinet types. I suppose it's a good way to show that everyone has their own personal tastes, I usually cite the One as the example of everything wrong about a horn based speaker. :)

if you dont crank the horns they sound great. people make the mistake of running them too hot or flat. they sound best min.

but.... they arent a great horn.

right, I like sealed cabs. but just because you prefer ported, they are not necessarily better.

Oh, I don't have a particular preference on enclosure types. I prefer them to be well designed/implemented and meet the needs of the user. :) Ported, bandpass, quarterwave based, horns, matters not to me. :) Although, I do have an affinity for very large sealed cabinets (preferably IB) or even dipole speakers when applicable. :)

IMO the Mach II is a really cool. I kinda wish I'd kept mine. They are great party & fun speakers and I found them enjoyable to listen to. Plenty dynamic & quasi authoritative with their high Q "bass" and didn't have any really nasty traits. They certainly elicited more comments from my buddies than anything else I'd had in awhile. For what they are, they are reasonably well made.

If I was to give them female traits I'd say they were from the wrong side of tracks, trying hard, and cute enough that you wouldn't be shamed if seen by someone you know. A longterm relationship however might be strained in some situations but when it's working, you are smiling.

Ahhh! Perfect!

That pretty much sums up what I feel about them. They aren't my thing. Really. No way. I mean I have "real" speakers. I'm not into these loud obnoxious things. Really! I'm not!

It's like talking to your wife about that hot woman on TV. No, she's not my type. I'm not into that kind of thing. Did you see how big those woofers were?

I think they're staying. But my wife doesn't know yet...

I guess we all have our own opinions about sealed or ported. It's all about how it's designed. I have sealed speakers (Small Advent, Large Advent, Dynaco A10 & A25, ADS L810, plus more), ported cabinets (Altec Milano's) and passive radiator cabinets (Polk SDA's and Monitor 10's). Out of all of them, the Polks and Altecs are my faves but they are also the largest. Love the smaller sealed bookshelf speakers...they do many things good. If the Mach's are your cup of tea, God bless you. I've had both...both when they were new and in recent years. Liked them a lot in my younger days. YMMV.

I'm with you. The big Machs are definately a "younger days" kind of deal. But I love them to death and I think I'm keeping them. For sure, they don't sound as "good" as some of my other speakers, but the more juice you feed them the better they sound. That's gotta be worth something. And since Brian has a big ole Radio Shack receiver I can pair with them, it will be a cool set up that will take me back to the day. Plus, I ran the idea by my daughter tonight and she practically teared up... She'll get a real kick out of having them in her room with the big receiver.

Take care,

Ed

I had a set of mach II's that I picked up for $40 with the "rounded corners".Actually the cabinets were pretty beat up.I didn't seem to care for the sound of them. They did have nice highs.Landed up putting the woofers in some CV's and keeping the tweeters.Maybe i should have tried them with more power to really get a feel for them.
