View Full Version : Hit a local record collectors show today
SpeakerLabFan 11-11-2007, 10:57 PM I hit a local record show today for the first time; it's held a few times a year and never a good day for me until this weekend. It was lots of fun, I highly recommend checking these out if you hear of any in your area. I plan on going to future shows. For Seattle area folks, the next show is January 20th. :thmbsp:
I saw a few familiar faces among the sellers, and I was able to root through many dozens of bargain boxes and found quite a few 50 cent or $1 LPs to round out my collection. A bunch of the room's sellers had tons of great records for $2 or 3 for $5 and I grabbed a few from those boxes too. I spent over 2 hours at the show this morning and it was a blast! :music:
I know that most of these are common and not hard to find, but they're all titles I wanted, in great condition, (unlike thrift store hit or miss), many with plastic outer sleeves, etc and cheap (most of these were $1 or less, none over $2) :music::banana:
Hot Tuna - The Phosphoresent Rat
Kingfish (Bob Weir band)
Grateful Dead Mars Hotel

Crown of Creation - Jefferson Airplane (my 3rd or 4th copy but couldn't pass for 50 cents)
Cold Blood - First Taste of Sin
Gordon Lightfoot - The Very Best of
The Hollies - Greatest Hits
Edgar Winter Group - Shock Treatment
Johnny Winter - John Dawson Winter III
The Beach Boys - Best of the Beach Boys, Vol 3

Klownschool 11-12-2007, 12:32 AM A friend of mine was one of the sellers there. Apparently no advertising was done for this show which kept attendance down. The person that used to run it passed away and his son is now running it. He has promised to do a better job with the show. They are usually a blast and you can fill out you collection for a small fee as Dick points out. I highly recommend going if you are thinking about it. Rock on!
Rick
SpeakerLabFan 11-12-2007, 01:29 AM Yeah, I got lucky and saw a flyer for the show at the flea market this weekend. Nice guy running the show, had his teenage son at the front door - they charged $2 admission but the January show is free. Everyone was thanking him for keeping the shows going, and passing along tips for getting the word out via the web, etc. I think a couple of posts in the Craigslist records and garage sales sections would have been simple and effective. Its definitely one-stop shopping for quality records and a blast as Rick mentioned.
The sellers were awesome, had great information, and good prices (and open to haggling, giving bulk discounts, etc). There were clearly some very chronic, serious, deeply addicted vinyl junkies roaming the place - one buyer mentioned that he had 29,000+ LPs in his collection, and closing in on 30k. :wtf: :music:
There were a few sellers with nothing but expensive records - maybe that's because they only had rare records but OTOH I saw some records in their pricey bins which I found for $1 comparable quality so like anywhere it's buyer beware. I saw some guys talking about a Beatles Butcher Cover in Stereo (one that had the newer cover peeled off with the Butcher underneath) with a $350 price tag and talking about how the Stereo version was quite a bit rarer than mono, they were surprised it hadn't been snapped up at that price. :dunno:
Mark W. 11-12-2007, 01:48 AM I try to hit all the shows in Oregon at least Portland to Eugene.
The largest record show in the NW is the Eugene Record Convection held next Feb 10th at the Eugene Hilton Hotel right downtown Eugene. I have hit this show in the past and it has about 100 tables full of records.
There is also a small show held in Canby Oregon at the Fair grounds which for some weird reason is about 1/2 45's and some really big 45 collectors attend.
A fun show is the Night time record show at the Eagles club on Hawthrone st in Portland it starts at 5:00pm early entry is at 3:00pm but you pay a LOT more to get in. best part about this show is it's in the middle of about a half dozen great Portland Used Record stores so you spend the morning hunting the stores then go to the show and polish off your next 3 pay checks LOL

I think that nighttime show in Portland is one that Klownschool has been to, and said it was a great scene. Yeah they had a flyer for the Canby OR show which is coming up next spring.
Funny you mention 45s -- they were a couple of sellers exclusively selling these with large collections, and a couple others with 1/2 LPs and half 45s. I was wondering about those guys when I saw them, do those guys actually listen to those singles or is it just a collector's thing? They definitely had some interested buyers. Seems like it would be really cumbersome to cue up a bunch of 45s for listening?
retrokeeper 11-12-2007, 05:51 AM Hey guys!!Did anybody see any magnetic medium,or are these events strictly records only? Rob
Mark W. 11-12-2007, 09:46 AM The Eugene show does not allow anything but Records (unless it's a tiny amount as part of a table full of records) I think. Other shows have had some. Last Night time show I passed on a couple dozen prerecorded 7" R2R tapes at $5.00-$10.00 each. Cassettes are pretty rare at the shows I have attended. And I don't remember seeing more then a few 8 tracks.
SpeakerLabFan 11-12-2007, 10:14 AM I was looking for cassettes as well as LPs and I saw a couple of sellers with large CD tables, a few dozen cassette tapes, and maybe a dozen 8-tracks. I picked up Rolling Stones - Some Girls on 8-track for 50 cents, and a few cassettes (3 for $1) including a Coltrane - Miles Davis compilation! I think it depends on what the sellers have - one guy was selling his 8-tracks because he didn't have his player anymore.

Hey Rob,
Very rarely. If that was the only reason you would be going it would be a waste of your time.

What, you never heard of jukeboxes? I wasn't really a record collector until I got a jukebox, now I have three...and you gotta have something to play in them!

Hi Bob, That does sound like alot of fun to have a juke box to load up with interesting old singles, and listen to them like we used to at the local burger joints. :thmbsp::music:
Scorpion8 11-13-2007, 01:43 AM Is there a weblink to the show for those of us who may have to plan ahead farther & longer on their travel schedules?
Bob E. 11-13-2007, 02:09 AM Hi Bob, That does sound like alot of fun to have a juke box to load up with interesting old singles, and listen to them like we used to at the local burger joints.
I forgot to mention that I have collected about 8,000 singles by now. I usually come back from record swaps with a knapsack full of 45's. It's easier to thumb through a stack of 45's and think "I remember that one!" or "Hmm, that sounds interesting", and add it to your pile...I'm much more discriminating with LP's, and think about whether I want the whole package of songs, whereas with singles, well, you just have one or two titles to be concerned with.
Jukeboxes are a lot of fun, especially if you like to have something with about equal parts of electronics and mechanical gubbins to tinker with...I have pinball machines for the same reason. My jukeboxes are all tube-amplified, and you can see the mechanisms...watching them play makes you think you have a robotic disc-jockey at your command!
