I have recently set up a PC to act as a music server (thanks to all on this forum who provided input).

At this point, things are working well. So well, in fact, that I now find I need some additional disk space. While I have several options, I am interested in the idea of just installing a network-connected drive (Ethernet) that can be accessed from all machines on the network.

Does anyone have any experience using a network drive for this purpose? I just want to make sure there are no subtle problems. Thanks.

Well, it depends on the machines you want to use to access the NAS. If you are referring to other computers, I have had no problems. However, some stand alone audio machines like Roku Soundbridge require a program to be running on the host. There are ways around this by installing applications on the NAS, but I usually just leave a computer on all the time so I can get tunes to the Roku without a hassle. I never tried installing a program for this purpose, so you would want to look at the online forum for your machine to be sure that there is a way to get it all to work together.

I hope that helps.

There is a thread about this very subject in this very forum about 7 threads down (http://www.audiokarma.org/forums/showthread.php?t=123876) - you may be able to garner some info from it, too.

Thank you. That does seem to cover the issue pretty well.
