As much as I enjoy and love vintage a gear. My main system started migrating towards the new. I'm going to look forward to learning about the new stuff.

Cheers

Right on. Although I love fiddling with and listening to my vintage gear, notice in my sig... the system I spend most of my time with is in my home office.

I agree. I don't think that I will ever get rid of my vintage marantz gear but I would like to start to build a new system with some new equipment. I have been looking at Creek, Vincent, and Cambridge Audio.

Just bought a McCormack DNA .5 poweramp but I'm giving it to my brother to
replace his ailing NAD gear. It sounds awesome and I hate to let him have.
I have a bunch of Marantz receivers and Yamaha receivers but am starting to
gather some separates like the Marantz 250 and Marantz 15 power amps. Hardly modern but I love the Marantz warmth. I guess I have a hybrid of old
vintage and modern, ie: Paradigm speakers, Cambridge audio CDP, etc.
My question is : as far as preamps go with my Marantz stuff, should I buy
vintage Marantz preamps, like 3600, 3300 etc. or try something newer and
more up to date? I could try BOTH!! Cheers - Jon

It's kinda ironic that my "new" uses old technology. A Cary Audio tube preamp.

I'm looking for a good tube amp or mono blocks. Probably go with some more Cary. Then probably a power conditioner. I missed out on a good deal for some Quad 22Ls. Darn.

Then...it will probably go on and on, cables, phono stage, MC cart, CDP, DAC, etc. It will be fun but because of cost, I'll have to make wiser decisions and sell some of the dear vintage gear.

Will it sound that much better? I doubt it, but I have to find out for myself.

This should be a good forum to keep an eye on. Love the old but new can be fun too.

This could mean more vintage gear available for the rest of us.

Great idea, I run a mix of old and new gear but only a little could be considered true vintage, by my definition anyway. I just hope that the AK feel can remain, and not go the way of some of the other modern gear sites. Going to be much tougher, given the growth of the Ak community....

It's nice to see this forum.

I'd love to ad a spankin'-new CD player to the mix, and my main setups are becoming more modernized in areas, though far from modern.

This will be a nice place to discuss, in a friendly manner, the new stuff.

Cheers!

The true "AK feel" is acceptance of all kinds of audio. These forums do not challenge that. Rather, they bring things back to where they should be.

It's all about optimal sound old or new. Good times and as always I will be watching and learning.

Agreed. But I've hung out at the other other audio web sites and they lack acceptance and the warm fuzzy feel of AK!

Great new forum. Maybe this will finally get across to those that mistakenly think AK is some kind of vintage cult.

Well it is certainly *some* kind of cult!

Great idea for a new forum.

RE Rule #2: "[No] comparisons to vintage gear unless you actually own the new stuff."

I think the distinction made here is important and will help keep commentary useful by screening out posts that just beat the vintage drum without actually comparing it to new stuff. But I hope the rule won't keep people from making comparisons when they have actually listened to both- I for one am very interested in cost-benefit analysis of old/vintage vs. newer gear.

My system is a combination of the old and the new. I chose an older amp (Sansui) because I still appreciate a range of tone controls and solid build quality, also because I perceived it to be a better value, although that advantage has been reduced by the cost of a complete recap.

But I chose a new CDP (Oberon/Xindak) because I think CD playback technology continues to evolve rapidly and is only now coming into its own. I chose new speakers (Totem Sttafs) due primarily to WAF factors- I could probably be happy with the very nice JBL 4311's I found awhile back on CL, but those simply will not fly in the main living space. I have a weakness for the appearance of vintage tuners with analog meters and own several of those.

In short, I'm not married to either old or new gear so I'll visit this forum with interest. I do hope people will share their impressions of how older stuff compares with newer, especially when some of the variables are accounted for, i.e. similar price points (in today's market), older stuff hopefully refurb'ed to good operating condition etc. so its not a totally apples and oranges comparison.

At the rate most of my vintage gear has been going belly-up lately..........
This forum might be my new "best friend"?

I to am glad to see this new forum surface. I purchased a new amplifier, as seen in my avatar, in October and felt that it would not be appropriate to "share" my thoughts on it in the other forums. Maybe it's just me being paranoid.

I also am currently using a newer dvd player as my main cdp. But again felt like a minority. I am prone to agree that cd player technology has improved significantly over the last 10 years or so. And I feel that dvd players can be a wonderful alternative to a cdp. I know there are other members that use dvd players as well for cd playback.

As with all of you I love my vintage gear but have had the itch to try newer stuff in the past year. You might say curiosity has got the best of me. Not just any new stuff. I have to feel that I am getting a decent piece of equipment in order to dish out the hard earned cash.

Hallelujah to this new forum.
