I have a set of SM 152's that I've had now since I brought them brand new in 1994. Up until recently, I didn't know there were other models with the different spec's. Yet no different to them in size. Is it just the cross over freq's that separate these speakers? I've been looking for another set on CL. But all you ( I ) seem to see are the SM 150's. Some say those are rated at 200watts. While the other's are 300watts. What makes them so different when they all look the same? Same speakers?
Plus can you still get replacement speakers for these from Infinity? I love 15's and will probably be forever stuck in the 80's and 90's when it comes to the size of my monitors. Anyone else still lugging these monsters around?
Here's mine.

Another thing I've noticed. When people get theirs reformed. I see the Infinity logo's are no longer used ( available? )

Many say the SM series leave something to be desired? I suspect there are good combinations of equipment that work pretty well with 150 on up :) It's the lesser SM (102's & 122's) that get folks to not like them. Your existing pair look very nice - way to go on maintenance :)
Go get them and try them out. If they aren't what you like, sell them again.

Some, but most buy used parts off the Bay and fix them up with that. There are lots of SM's being parted out (cost of transport to high) so parts will be readily available for a while.

Hello. I'm new the forum. I have a pair of the sm 255's. i noticed that the woofer surround has big tears in it. I went to the infinity site and they want 176.84 for a replacement. I emailed infinity to see if they would send me out a free replacement. If not are there any good replacement 15 inch woofers u guys would recommend? Thanks in advance.

Nah, don't sweat the tears (sp?). 1.) do the woofers still work? If yes, go to step 2.
2.) Private Message (PM) Reedger about replacement foams (the surrounds) for your woofers? While you are at it, run your fingers around the mid surrounds, if they feel stiff and hard they need to replaced too.
There are lots of threads around here on re-foaming (re-edging) speakers/drivers. You can do a few searches and get the idea. If you don't feel comfortable doing the work yourself, you can send the individual speakers to a shop to have it done. It'll be cheaper by far than replacement woofers, they will still balance electrically with the crossovers, they will match each other correctly, etc.
You can replace woofers, but Infinity woofers are not the easiest to match performance wise. I went through 5 trial speakers before I got a good match for my RS-3000. They are now very good speakers, but that's a bit more than most folks will stomach? You might want to search the threads on cabinet bracing too? I'm sure the SM cabs can use a few additional braces to tighten up and help define the bass a bit more?
Tell us where abouts you live in general and maybe we can recommend a shop in your area to do the speaker surrounds?

Hi thanks for answering my post. I live in new jersey, very close to new york city. I was just thinking about getting some different woofers, because the bass is not that great. But sure, let me know of any shops in my area that can do the work. my zip code is 07661. Thanks again.

I've got 2 pair of minty 255s and I live in Philly. Make me an offer if you want a pair of them. I've moved up to Sentry IIIs and could use the room.
Cheers,
